Secoroc PARD System

a boost for
Atlas Copco has been in the mining and construction market for many years and is committed to innovative, productive, market leading solutions such as QL technology for DTH hammers. Thanks to that we now present our latest innovation for Rotary drilling - the Secoroc PARD System - designed to boost rotary drilling performance.
Combining the best of DTH and Rotary drilling technology
What is PARD (Percussion Assisted Roatry Drilling)? Simply defined, PARD is the next viable choice to drilling faster and more efficiently. Other benefits include straighter drill holes, easier hole collaring and increased productivity. This is achieved through increased penetration rates which lower the total cost of drilling (TDC). Targeting mines seeking step-change technology which yields lower operating costs, the Secoroc PARD System opens new potential for rotary drillers. The PARD System was developed as a light weight, high frequency, low impact hammer with specially designed tricone drill bits. The system can be adapted to standard blasthole drill rigs and drill strings. The result? A combination of percussive power and rotational force that increases ROP significantly.

The most cost efcient holes in the market

Thanks to Atlas Copco's percussive expertise, the Secoroc PARD hammer is fine tuned with the aid of a unique parallel airflow system. Drilling costs are reduced and kept down to a minimum by drilling more holes per shift than ever before. That means higher productivity, and lower total drilling costs!

Easy to install and operate

Installing the Secoroc PARD System is easily adaptable and reversable to existing drilling operations. The simple installation means adding an oiler and a starter drill pipe. Once the correct starter drill pipe, hammer and bit are in place, it's a matter of simply adjusting the airflow to set the frequency and you are ready to drill. It was also discovered that the PARD System makes collaring easier and drilling more stable!

Specially designed for productivity

Let's take a look at the technology behind the Secoroc PARD System:

High energy output hammer

The Secoroc PARD hammer has been developed to increase rotary drilling productivity. This low impact hammer has a special short stroke lightweight piston. A synergy combination is formed between this tuned hammer and the rotary forces which results in the Secoroc PARD system creating a higher level of energy than a DTH hammer or rotary power alone. And that means a lot more holes per shift.

Special tricone drill bits

Secoroc PARD tricone bits are designed to retain the same service life as standard tricone bits while increasing ROP. This has been achieved by redesigning PARD tricone drill bits to withstand additional stresses and strains. All this adds up to greater productivity and lower cost per foot drilled.

Available in two models

The Secoroc PARD system is designed for drilling medium to hard rock blastholes from 9 7/8" to 12-1/4" (250mm-311mm) in diameter. They are available in two models: Secoroc PARD 10 (for 9-7/8" to 11") and Secoroc PARD 12 (for 12-1/4" to 13-3/4") with a selection of Secoroc PARD tricone bits.

Unique airow system

The Secoroc PARD system has a unique parallel airflow system that directs the air down two paths. One path goes into the hammer and facilitates the percussion action. The other path channels the air, via the properly installed bit nozzles, through the Secoroc PARD tricone drill bits and cleans out the hole. This facilitates efficient cuttings removal, excellent hammer cooling and optimal efficiency. The Secoroc PARD system operates at similar pressures as conventional rotary drilling, with low pressure air of 50-110 psi+.

Tried and tested

here are the views of a few customers
North American Gold Mine, USA
At a mine in northern Nevada, parameters used to test the Secoroc PARD 10 System were exactly the same as those used for standard bits. The only exception was air pressure. The first hole of 45 ft was drilled in 8 minutes. The driller was impressed, mentioning the area being drilled normally takes about 10-13 minutes to drill the same depth. He also commented that using the Secoroc PARD System was definitely faster than using a standard rotary drill bit. He also stated that the hammer was smoother to collar the hole, since it suppressed some of the vibrations experienced with a standard rotary bit during the first 10 ft of the hole. Compared to conventional rotary drilling, the Secoroc PARD System is drilling 100 ft/hr or 30% faster.

Aitik Mine, Sweden

Prior to testing with the Secoroc PARD 12 System, bits were taking 45-60 minutes to drill 17 m holes. This means a ROP of around 22.7 m/hr at the most. With the Secoroc PARD 12 System, the first 10 holes' ROP was increased by an average of 48%. The bit ran a total of 1,110 m, which was approximately 10% greater than the normally expected bit life.

Copper Mountain Mine, British Columbia, Canada

Copper Mountain Mine was founded in 1884 and officially closed its underground operation in 1958. The mine is located in British Columbia, approximately 200 kilometers northeast of Vancouver. This mine was re-established as an open pit mining operation by Newmont Mining Corporation (1972-1988). Princeton Mining took over until 1996, and after 10 years, Copper Mountain Ltd. purchased the property. After geological confirmation of mineral deposits sufficient to create a super pit, Atlas Copco is at the forefront to support this future development. Geological rock samples analyzed by Atlas Copco Secoroc indicated requirements necessary for drilling higher strength, harder rock up to 200 MPa. With higher demands to increase production through the mill, drill and blast operations needed a new method of increasing productivity results from their Atlas Copco Pit Viper fleet. Recent changes in bit design helped increase bit life, but with market conditions requiring higher production rates, an alternate solution was required. Atlas Copco then proposed an innovative option to help speed up drilling. The PARD 10 was introduced in mid-July 2012 on a PV271 drill rig to to see if any benefit could be realized. Since then, momentous improvements have been observed in penetration rates 30% and higher. A second proposal was accepted by Copper Mountain to test a PARD 12 in mid-September 2012. Increased production rates and additional cost savings, by drilling larger diameter holes with the PARD System are anticipated.

Cerro Verde Mine, South America

The Secoroc PARD 10 System was tested at Cerro Verde Mine starting in a hard rock formation of 200 to 250 MPa and a RQD of 75-90%. The bit life in this area is generally 900 to 1200 meters, with a ROP of 16 to 20m/ hr. At this particular mine, a hole 16.5m deep took an average of 60 minutes to drill. With the Secoroc PARD System, drilling time was reduced to less than 30 minutes per hole. The penetration rate had been 20 m/hr, while with the Secoroc PARD System, 40 meters per hour was acheived no less than twice the ROP!.
