What to Expect
Getting Here: Entrance can only be accessed from Red Gate Road. Students and buses will be arriving from 7:00-7:15 am, so please plan to arrive before 7:00 am. Upon Arrival: After you check in and receive your Registration Packet, please take time to get acquainted with fellow presenters and enjoy the continental breakfast. Report to your location by 7:40 am for introductions and final set up. The Audience: Your audience will consist of approximately 1025 high school freshmen and sophomores (14-16 years old). Visual demonstrations and aids are helpful for many of these students to further their understanding of your topic, as well as an interactive element to your presentation. Each student will be carrying a Career Day Guide. The guide instructs each student to discover something interesting about possible career fields. Please see the attached sheet for questions students may ask. For Booth Hosts: Some sort of eye-level visual aid is recommended but not required for your booth. You are welcome to bring items to hand out to the students, but it is not required. For many of our students, the Career Fair will be their first introduction to the job market. They will likely visit booths in groups and may not initiate conversation right away but will be interested in looking at your booth. In addition to discovering something interesting to write in their Guides, students are also asked to record your name, title, and business so that they can remember with whom they spoke. In addition, they will have cards for you to stamp to show they visited your booth. If they fill their card, they can enter it in the closing for raffle prizes. Please stamp their cards after they speak with you. Booths will be pre-marked with this information. Here are a few other considerations for your booth: Bring materials that portray your career in a way that students can understand. It will be helpful for students if you include some information on the education requirements necessary for your career. Consider setting up an interactive or hands-on exhibit. Try to involve students; remember that they often learn best by seeing and doing. Bring pictures, equipment, tools/displays, and brochures. Show a pertinent career-related video that appeals to young people. For Panel Presenters: Although not required, you may elect to use a PowerPoint or other electronic presentation. If you do, please email the completed presentation to Kendra Lee at kendra.lee@d303.org by Friday, April 18. You should plan to speak for 7-10 minutes about your career, including information about what you do on a daily basis, the benefits of your career, the downsides of your career, any education or training requirements, pay scale or range, jobs that led to your current career, and how those jobs helped you. Students enjoy hearing stories about the day -to-day. They want to know what you like and dont like. They especially want to know what they should be doing now in order to reach their career goals. During your time to speak, consider ways to get the stu dents involved. Ask them what they know about the career about which you are speaking. Find out what assumptions they might have. Encourage them to participate and to get engaged. After all 2-3 professionals on the panel present, the floor will be open to questions from the students. A St. Charles North High School staff member assigned to your room will act as a moderator for the questions. The moderator will also have a few general questions for you to field if the students need some assistance or encouragement in asking questions. Students will have a 3x5 index card on which to write questions that they think of as you speak.
