Why teach decoding to older students?

Students who struggle with reading most often have decoding difficulties, no matter their age. Many older students experience undiagnosed decoding difficulties that hamper their academic achievement. They dont have the skills necessary to accurately read the multi-syllabic words that drive their content area reading. When their basic reading skills are missing or weak they often misread, guess, or skip words they dont know.

The workshop will introduce Phonics Suite a set of sh materials from s Phonic Really Great Z BLIT Reading that Phonic s s BOOS Phonic identify, group, and Z T BLIT teach adolescent struggling readers. In Phonics Suite lessons, students learn to accurately decode both familiar and unfamiliar words through appropriately-paced, multisensory, systematic, and explicit phonics and phonemic awareness instruction. Lessons include instruction to improve fluency with non-decodable text. Students work on improving their accuracy and reading rate through the use of expository, high-interest passages.

Learn to quickly and accurately identify students who could benefit from phonics and phonemic awareness instruction.
Successful implementation of intervention lessons begins with appropriately diagnosing and grouping students. This workshop teaches how to administer and score the Diagnostic Decoding Surveys and also explains how the scores are used to group students via Really Great Readings free Grouping Matrix.

The lessons quickly introduce academic vocabulary that students encounter in their content area classes. Therefore, older students are challenged by the lessons and do not feel as if they are in a reading program developed for younger children. Walk away with practical skills to help students quickly learn to decode better, read familiar and new words accurately, improve fluency, and increase comprehension.

Who should attend?

The workshop is for teachers or others who have a basic understanding of phonics. Teachers will leave the workshop equipped to deliver both Phonics Blitz and Phonics Boost lessons and ready to help their students become better readers. Even if they dont use Phonics Blitz or Phonics Boost, participants will learn valuable techniques for helping struggling readers.
