I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
FPGA based digital design. Implementation of FPGA digital hardware systems based on the algorithms and
implementation requirements using hardware description languages, optimization, logic synthesis, place and
route methods. Implementation of finite state machines. (Lecture-problems 2 hours, laboratory 3 hours.)
Prerequisites: EE201

II. MAJOR COURSE TOPICS

1. Review of logic functions, arithmetic circuits, combinational circuits
2. Flip-flops, registers, counters
3. Hardware description language (VHDL)
4. Sequential circuits, state machines
5. FPGA design flow, system implementation, testing
6. Digital system design

III. TEXTBOOK
Stephen Brown, Zvonko Vranesic, "Fundamentals of Digital Logic with VHDL Design", McGraw-Hill, 3rd
edition, 2009.

IV. GRADING
Homework/Lab
Midterm #1
Midterm #2
Final exam

20%
25%
25%
30%

Late homework will not be accepted.

**Extra assignments for honors section.

Labs are to be done in groups of 2 students. A lab report is due per group after each lab is completed. Late
lab report will not be accepted. The lab grade is based on successful demonstration of the lab and the lab
report.
The lab requires the purchase of a Nexys2 Spartan-3E FPGA Board which costs $129 (academic pricing)
from: http://www.digilentinc.com. Each group need only purchase one FPGA board.
Midterm and Final exams are closed book and notes. There are no make-ups for the midterms and final exam
unless it is an excused absence according to university policy:
http://www.csulb.edu/divisions/aa/catalog/current/academic_information/class_attendance.html. Be prepared
to show documentation.
The class will be graded on a curve at the end of the semester based on the total points earned. Independent
of the curve, if the student receives 90% of the total possible points or above, he/she will automatically get an
A; 80% of the total points or above, a B; 70% of the total points or above, a C; and so on. The curve can only
help the student's grade.

V. WITHDRAWAL
It is the student's responsibility to observe the university withdrawal policy and deadlines:
http://www.csulb.edu/depts/enrollment/registration/details.html#anchorl
http://www.csulb.edu/depts/enrollrnent/dates/registration.html
Deadline to withdraw or drop classes without 'W' grade:
Deadline to drop without college dean's signature:

Feb 3, 2014
Aprl8,2014

VI. ACCOMMODATION
It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor in advance of the need for accommodation of a
disability.

VII. CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM

Cheating and plagiarism are serious academic offenses. Students should be aware that faculty members have
a range of academic actions available to them in cases of cheating and plagiarism from failing a student on
that particular work, to failing a student in a course, to referring the case to judicial affairs. Please read the
section on cheating and plagiarism in the CSULB catalog.
