Introduction Marriage is highly encouraged in Islam. Basically, marriage is the physical relationship between man and woman.

It is also referred to the contract of marriage. Which makes a relationship of man and woman lawful. The term lawful is referred to the manner that is allowed by the Shariah. According to Muhammad Abu Zahrah, the modern scholar, he defined marriage contract as a contract that results in the man and woman living together and supporting each other within the limits of what has been laid down for them in terms of rights and obligations. However, the relation between man and woman is forbidden until some evidence shows otherwise. Moreover, Allah has mentioned in the Quran, And of everything We have created pairs that you may be mindful (51:49). In addition, Prophet (SAW) said, narrated by Bukhari and Muslim, O young men, whoever among you has the ability, let him marry. This hadith refers to the ability of men and it is forbidden men who do not have the financial or physical means to marry or feels certain that they will not treat their wives properly Although Islam encourages men and women to get married, there are several kinds of marriage that Islam forbids. They are, marriage of same gender, marriage with mushrik or mushrikah (unbeliever), get married to married woman, marriage without wali, during period of iddah, and many more. In this paper, we are trying to highlight those types of forbidden marriage and what makes them prohibited.

Marriage of same gender Homosexuality is a sexual activity between two people of the same gender in which Islam condemns and prohibits such activity. During the time of Lut prophet, homosexual was not an unknown and in the Quran, Allah has mentioned the people of Lut whom the Quran describes as engaging in homosexuality. It is a sinful to commit such act as Allah has said in the Quran; And (We sent) Lot when he said to his people: What! Do you commit an indecency which anyone in the world has not done before you? Most surely you come to males in lust besides females; nay you are an extravagant people. And the answer of his people was no other than that they said: Turn them out of your town, surely they are a people who seek to purify (themselves). So We delivered him and his followers, except his wife; she was of those who remained behind. And We rained upon them a rain; consider then what was the end of the guilty. (7:8084) Definitely, Islam forbids homosexuality and lesbianism and regard them as a violation of the commands of Allah. All Prophets of Allah forbid such evil activities and punish severely those who practice them. In the hadith, narrated by Ibn Abbas and Said bin Jubayr, And the two persons among you who commit illegal sexual intercourse, punish them both1 and according to Ibn Abbas, Messenger of Allah said, Whoever you catch committing the act of the people of Lut (homosexuality), then kill both parties to the act2 Islam encourages a marriage, however, prohibits a marriage in respect of same gender. Marriage is universally known to be between a man and a woman, not between a man and a man or between a woman and a woman. Marriage in Islam, as in all divine religions, does not mean sexual pleasure only but also the formation of a family on hygienic and safe foundations. In addition, the purposes of marriage in Islam are to seek pleasure of Allah as well as to produce righteous children who will be obedient to Allah and who will be a source of reward for their parents after they die.3 Allah tells in the Quran that He created everything in pairs. Referring to this, Allah Almighty says, And that He created pairs, the male and the female (An-Najm: 45). Surely, the pairs referred to in the above verse are of different kinds, not of the same kind. Back to the purpose of marriage, it would be ridiculous for a same-gender couple to have

biological children and it violates the purpose of marriage in perspective of Islam. Additionally, Allah will never let such an act go without punishment. We have an example of the people of Lut who were deeply involved in such immoral acts and were destroyed by Allah. Furthermore, with all the evidence stated above, it is obviously that Islam prohibits homosexuality, marriage of same gender and other activities that relate to them. As a Muslim, one should not commit himself into such activities as they will result in severe punishment by Allah.
