1. Describe the projects and activities you completed during this experience. For this experience, Brittany and I had to develop a presentation for 11th graders thatrevolved aroung a nutrition topic while meeting some of the NH 11th grade curriculum requirements. We chose to focus our presentation on the culture and traditions of Venezuela and help the students identify the connection between cultural origins, politics and food. For the presentation, we had to bring a food sample and expose the students to differen ingredients. 2. What new knowledge was gained or new skills practiced? I learned that sometimes we understimate the knowledge of younger students and end up making presentations simpler than they need to be. Knowledge levels vary so much between schools, and even classes, it is hard to asses how much students know before hand. If I were to do this presentation again, I would try to make it more detailed. 3. Identify the roll of the nutrition professional at this site and discuss your interactions with the professionals and audience members at the site. As nutrition professionals, our job was to educate the students on the relationship between cultural practices and food. These students were all from a variety of cultures so it was our job to integrate what they knew into our presentation and help them understand different traditions better through food. 4. Were there regulations or rules at this site that were related to the Scope of Practice for Nutrition and Dietetics, or the Code of Ethics? As dietetic professionals, it was our job to be aware and sensitive of cultural differences among the group of students. We had to be careful with students making discriminatory comments and know how to manage the classroom to avoid them . Because we were talking about one culture only, it would have been easy for some students to feel targeted so we made sure this was not the case. 5. What did you learn about the audience / population group? What did you learn about yourself? As I mentioned before, I learned that often they are more knowledgeable than we give them credit for. About myself, I learned that I really enjoy working with teenagers because they are at a stage where they are receptive and can think critically about the information you are giving them. 6. Describe how you were effective with this topic or with this group. What would you do differently in the future?

I was effective with this group because we discussed an interesting topic and managed to integrate it into their curriculum. If I were to present to them again, I would definitely make sure to include more activities in the presentation to make it more fun for the students and more interactive. 7. Summarize the ways that you applied wellness concepts and messages in this rotation. Discuss whether there were any opportunities to promote sustainable food choices or address sustainability from a food systems perspective. We applied wellness messages through the messages conveyed through our presentation and explanations of home-made, more natural food. We did not have a chance to address sustainability through our presentation, except perhaps cultural sustainability by making students aware of all the different cultural backgrounds among them.
