Ice breaker: o Ask students about their own culture and then relate that to how not all people from one culture look the same and that is the case for Venezuelan citizens. Then show pictures of people who look like they may be from different cultures but are all Venezuelan to show that there are a variety of influences to the people. Objectives: o To identify the main components of Venezuelan culture. o To identify natural resources of various regions. o To understand the connection between culture and food. o To identify the factors that affect food choices and availability. NH Curriculum Frameworks o Social Studies: 1. Geography: SS:GE:2: Page 88 - Places and Regions: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the physical and human geographic features that define places and regions as well as how culture and experience influence people's perceptions of places and regions. - SS:GE:12:2.2: Investigate how relationships between humans and the physical environment lead to the formation of place, e.g., terracing of hillsides or oasis agriculture. (Themes: C: People, Places and Environment, D: Material Wants and Needs,G: Science, Technology, and Society) 2. World History: SS:WH:5: Page 100 - Social/Cultural: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the changing forms of production, distribution and consumption of goods and services over time. - SS:WH:12:4.3: Analyze the development and impact of various labor systems, e.g., slavery, the medieval guilds, or wage labor. (Themes: C: People, Places and Environment, D: Material Wants and Needs, I: Patterns of Social and Political Interaction) Content o Venezuela Geography: Explain how this affects imports and exports of food and other resources as well as business in general. Climate: Explain the different climates and the way in which it affects what products are grown and sold in different regions of the country.

Common Resources: Islands Fish Coffee Plantains Andes Coffee Sugar Cane Trout Capital Cocoa Corn Coffee Llanos Cattle Rice Corn

Arepas: Traditional cornmeal cake Cachapas: Corn based pancake Pasta: second largest consumers of pasta worldwide Hallaca: Cornmeal wrapped in leaves and filled with meats, capers, raisins, olives. Fruits and Vegetables: Many of them are different from what we eat here in the USA. Fruits: Papaya Mangoes Soursop Plantains Nispero Vegetables Yucca Apio Turnip-root celery Pumpkin Politics Cuts on the budget Inflation -> decrease in minimal wages

There are severe shortages of basic goods such as milk, sugar, oil, chicken and beef. o How does this affect food choices? Increased food prices. Lower caloric intake. Nutrient needs are not met Milk = biggest source of Ca for many individuals No milk = less Ca What is you have a food allergy? Even harder to afford food because most special diet food is imported Food sampling o Cachapas: Like pancakes, made out of fresh corn dough.
