Textbook (Pearson Prentice Hall) Pearson Prentice Hall. (2005). History of Our World: The Early Ages, 466-470.

Opening Set:
Tell the students that we have to get down to business first with a small quiz, but then we will learn more about exploration. Have the bell work up before they enter the room, and tell them to turn in their bell work in the class period drawer after they finish it.

Learning Task/Procedures:
1) Give the students a few minutes to answer the bell work. 2) Pass out the quiz, tell them that they can write on it, they can start as soon as they get it, and they will have 15 minutes to complete it. TIAI 7: The quiz will count as part of their daily grade and is worth 20%. 3) Have them put the quiz in the file drawer that is labeled for their class in the back of the room. 4) Have the students take notes while following along with the power point lecture. 5) Discuss the slides and answer questions when asked. TIAI 16: Copies of the slides will be given to those who have IEPs that require this. A copy of the power point is in a notebook in the front of the class for students who write slowly. Auditory, Visual, and Kinesthetic instruction will be used. TIAI 7: Students will be told to star, underline, or make a mark beside content that is important or they may see again!

[Cross discipline in Science] Introduce the students to the spices called Cloves and Nutmeg. These spices are located in the Moluccas, which are called the Spice Islands. Cloves are flowers that bloom on a tree. They are green until they bloom. Once they bloom they turn red with a yellow center. When cloves are boiled they release an oily substance that is used to spice tea and foods. The natives drank cloves from the boiled water for medicine. Nutmeg grows on a tree. It is the size of a pecan and must be cracked open. The center of the nut is what is important. It is mostly consumed in powder form, and it is used to spice tea and foods. It takes seven to nine years to harvest a newly planted tree. It takes twenty years before the nutmeg tree reaches full maturity.

Closing:
1) Ask the students how did Portugal trade in India? How did the Portuguese expand to the Spice Islands?

2) Ask the students if they have any questions. 3) Portugal and their expanded trade! Good times for Portugal! Tomorrow this is about to change so prepare yourself.
