e. Pastors/Church Workers in Retirement

1. THE PRESENT SITUATION


a. Need for Retirement Community – eg Cheras Sri Seronok Retirement
Village
b. Churches becoming more aware of Senior needs and rights
c. Churches are organizing more Senior-related Programmes
d. No Coordinated Projection Plan for Seniors:
I. Independent Living to Assisted Living
II. Assisted Living to Full Assistance Living
III. Full Assistance Living to Nursing Care
IV. Nursing Care to Hospice
V. Hospice to End of Life Needs

1. THE VISION
a. Establish Retirement Communities in all Major Cities of Malaysia
b. Initiate Nursing Homes and Senior Citizen Care Centres in all Major
Towns of Malaysia
c. Initiate Hospice Projects in all Major cities of Malaysia
d. Inculcate Awareness Programmes on Senior Citizen Issues and Needs

2. THE PROPOSAL: PRACTICAL STEPS TO TAKE


a. Highlight Plight of Seniors in Local Churches, Towns
i. Read the News
ii. Investigate among friends and Inter-church efforts
iii. Write in Church Bulletins, MSF Newsletter, etc
b. Organize Care Programmes for Seniors
c. Identify Seniors who live alone – whether individuals or couples.
i. Collate data and keep Up-to-date files – with MSF or Church
Office
d. Establish a Contact Ministry
i. Establish Visiting Angels Programme – Professional or Church
based
e. Identify Qualified Personnel in Town who are concerned about
Geriatric Issues; and Mobilize them
i. Doctors/Nurses, Lawyers, Architects, Businessmen,
Developers
ii. Pastors, Counsellors, Care Givers
f. Initiate Neighbourhood/City Projects via MP’s and Politicians
i. Senior-friendly walk-paths, parks, buildings, transport system
ii. New Housing Estate Proposals
g. Pray and Plan for the day when Retirement Communities will be
established throughout the Peninsula

h. Develop a Network of Concerned Persons:

Questions:
What about Citizens aged 55 and above – The “Baby Boomer” Group?
How many are living with Children/Extended Family; How many are living alone?
How many belong to Support Groups/Communities?
How many are in need of Retirement Homes, Communities, Nursing Centres, etc.?
