As you move from the impersonal to the interpersonal, you begin to share more information about yourself. There are 4 main characteristics to the continuum: 1. Role vs. personal information: In the impersonal role, the two people would respond to one another according to the role they re playing. !or e"ample, if you were to get into a ta"i you would play the role of passenger, whereas the person driving the ta"i will be playing his or her own role. #ou would li$ely %ust get into the ta"i, give the ta"i driver the information on where you would li$e to go, then you would pay the driver, and finally you would leave. &owever, as you move into more interpersonal relationships, you have more personal information to play off of. Ta$e, for e"ample, the idea of a father and son. The father and son would not li$ely react and communicate according to specific roles' rather, they would treat each other as uni(ue individuals. #ou communicate on the basis of personal information. ). *ocietal vs. personal rules: *ociety sets rules for us as individuals. There are some obvious communication acts that are seen as appropriate and inappropriate depending on how the relationship falls on the continuum. Imagine you go into a restaurant with some friends. The waiter or waitress comes up to your table and starts to rub your shoulders and as$ how your day was going, and finally as$s what you would li$e to eat. According to society, this is not normal behavior. In fact, this is behavior that would be displayed in a more interpersonal relationship. +ecause of this, we conform to what rules society sets for us. ,n the other hand, if you were in a close interpersonal relationship with a boyfriend or girlfriend, it would be less shoc$ing if he or she started to rub your shoulders because they $now what rules you have established as o$ay and not o$ay. -. .redictive and e"planatory data: /hen you begin a relationship on the impersonal side of the continuum, it is unli$ely that you will be able to predict what the other person will do, say, mean, and so on. ,nce you begin to get to $now the person you move forward on the continuum to a point that you have e"planations for the other person s behavior. This is demonstrated at the beginning of each semester. As a student, unless you ve ta$en a previous class from the instructor, you cannot predict for sure how an instructor will act, how he or she will teach, what he or she will e"pect, and more. As you move through the semester, you gather more information to e"plain how that instructor acts, teaches, e"pects, and so on. 4. *ocial vs. personal messages: The messages you send to different people will also change depending on where each person falls on the continuum. If you are on the impersonal end of the scale, you will not disclose a lot of information or have an emotional attachment. &owever, when you are in a relationship on the interpersonal side, you are more willing do disclose more personal and emotional information. !or e"ample, you are more li$ely to share important information with close family and friends, but less li$ely to tell that ta"i driver about all of your problems. 2.
