OUTLINE
LESSON 10 THE PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE : TENSILE TEST FOR CONRETE I. For certain aspects of design it is necessary of the tensile strength of concrete. a. The flexural tensile strength is determined. b. The direct tensile strength of the concrete is measured. The modulus of rupture test it carried out on a standart small beam of cross-sction 150x150 mm and length 700 mm,which is supported over a span of 600 mm(Fig. 1.5). a. The flexural formula = M/Z for elastic material is used to determine the extreme fibre tensile stress at which the beam fails. b. The loading pattern is that which will produce a uniform moment over a specific length of the specimen, namely 100 mm on either side of the specimen centre line. c. The modulus of rupture varies between 11% and 23% of the compressive strength, and a value of 15% is commonly assumed when testing is not carried out. The cylinder-spilitting test is so-called. a. A concentrated line load is applied to the cylindrical specimen laid on edge, producing a tensile stress across the vertical diameter of the specimen (Fig.1.5). b. Equilibrium of internal forces, compressive stresses must exist at the top and bottom of the cylinder. The test may also be used to determine the compressive strength of a specimen. The direct tensile strength determined in this way is somewhat less tha the modulus of rupture, varying between 7% and 11% of the compressive strength.

SUMMARY
LESSON 10 THE PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE : TENSILE TEST FOR CONRETE For certain aspects of design it is necessary to obtain the measure of the tensile strength of concrete. Two forms of test are used and the direct tensile,or cylinder -splitting test in which the direct tensile strength of the concrete is measured. The loading pattern is that which will produce a uniform moment over a specific length of the speciment, namely 100 mm on either side of the specimen centre line. The cylinder-splitting is so-called because a concentrated line load is applied to the cylindrical specimen laid on edge, producing a tensile stress across the vertical diameter of the specimen. Equilibrium of internal forces, compressive stresses must exist at the top and bottom of the cylinder, the tensile stress. The direct tensile strength determined in this way is somewhat less than the modulus of rupture, varying between 7% and 11% of the compressive strength.
