writer observed a fire drill on Saturday at 12:00 am in Toscannini College and observed that "many residents were drunk."
He goes on to state that they "surprisingly included those (sic) attended Shabbat Under the Stars or would attend Hillel
Sukkot Lunch later." I can state categorically that if the writer observed students who were drunk it was not due to them
attending either of these events. Alcohol is not served at Hillel events with the exception, which is legal, of approxi-
mately 1.5 oz. of sacramental wine that has a less than 6% alcohol content and only one per person is permitted; hardly
enough to make anyone drunk. We also provide a non-alcoholic grape juice alternative and nearly half the students who
attend these functions choose it instead.
Perhaps what the writer intended to say was that he observed drunk students whom he believes are Jewish, which
seems to be supported by his next statement that he "will never understand some of these kids, whether devoted faith
or cultic faith." I'm not sure what exactly he means, but he seems to think that students who claim to be religious in one
form or another should not be getting drunk. On this point, if that is what he means, he may in fact be right, but then
this would not be the first time that people professing a particular belief may engage in behaviors that are inconsistent
with its teachings. at is not a particularly Jewish problem, nor does it take place at any Jewish religious services or pro-
grams held on this campus. It sounds like the writer has some difficulty distinguishing between students who may hap-
pen to be Jewish and students who may participate in Hillel activities, which are certainly not one and the same. It's
somewhat stereotypic to label fellow students so broadly, and in this case it was certainly not warranted to connect what
the writer observed with the Hillel programs he mentioned.
Rabbi,
I was in attendance of the fire drill that Kotei witnessed and was there (inebriated) with the students who he saw and
claimed were from Hillel. While I agree with all of your points concerning Judaism, wine and differentiating Jewish stu-
dents from Jewish students who do not attend Hillel (I happen to fall in the latter), I have to raise one point: these kids
were drunk. ey had attended a Hillel event earlier that night, exited sober, returned to Toscanini sober but then pro-
ceeded to drink once they had returned. Yes, they had not gotten drunk at Shabbat Under e Stars, but they had in-
deed attended it and got drunk later.
Respectfully,
