MIDI
Ten years ago MIDI vas sliII a slrange nev lhing lo nosl nusicians and conpuler users. Nol any

speciaI nelvork of calIes. These calIes, vhich are used onIy for MIDI dala and nolhing eIse, pIug inlo
speciaI five-pin DIN jacks vhich are lypicaIIy IaleIed IN, UT, and THRU. The IN jack receives MIDI
dala. The UT jack lransnils il. And lhe THRU jack aulonalicaIIy echoes and re-lransnils vhalever
dala is leing received al lhe IN jack (lhis Iasl funclion has a speciaI use III gel lo in a ninule).
ne of lhe inporlanl lhings lo renenler aloul MIDI is lhal dala fIov is slriclIy one-vay. Make sure
you aIvays pIug lhe UT jack of one inslrunenl inlo lhe IN jack of anolher, and vice-versa. The olher
choices ~ UT lo UT, or IN lo IN ~ vonl vork.
If youII Iook on lhe lack of your NanoSynlh youII see lhal il doesnl have an IN, an UT, and a
THRU. Inslead il has an IN and a conlined UT/THRU. There are good reasons for lhis: (1) The
NanoSynlh doesnl have a luiIl-in keyloard or anylhing eIse lo pIay, so il doesnl reaIIy need an UT
jack. (2) Conlining UT and THRU jacks saves a IillIe on lhe cosl, lringing lhe unils price dovn. (3)

The second vay is lo daisy-chain severaI unils logelher.
A daisy-chain is vhere lhe UT/THRU jack on lhe NanoSynlh cones inlo use. Afler connecling lhe

Ior reasons vhich viII lecone cIear jusl a IillIe Ialer in lhis seclion, a daisy chain is definileIy lhe vay

avaiIalIe. These are organized in 16 calegories of eighl prograns each.
The 16 calegories are chosen using lhe CATLCRY knol. They are:

Iirsl, vhen you send Bank SeIecl and Irogran Change connands, lhe fronl paneI knols donl nove.
This neans lhal you couId easiIy le pIaying IIAN 1 via MIDI, say, vhiIe lhe lvo knols poinl lovard
LIILCT 12. Donl le fooIed.
SecondIy, lhe Ialesl Bank SeIecl connand lhal lhe NanoSynlh receives, eilher fron ils fronl paneI or
over MIDI, is vhal il pays allenlion lo. Ior an exanpIe of lhis, consider lhe foIIoving silualion. Using
MIDI, you seIecl lhe User lank and a cerlain progran you Iike. Then soneone cones aIong (vhiIe you
arenl Iooking) and lurns lhe IRCRAM knol selling for lhal MIDI channeI lo one of lhe CeneraI
MIDI lank prograns. Nov CeneraI MIDI is seIecled, and if aII you send lhe NanoSynlh is a Irogran
Change connand (inslead of a Bank SeIecl foIIoved ly a Irogran Change) you vonl gel lhe progran
you vanled. Inslead, youII gel lhe sane-nunlered progran in lhe CeneraI MIDI lank.
TIP: Because of lhis, I suggesl lhal you aIvays send lolh a Bank SeIecl connand and a Irogran
Change connand, logelher, vhen conlroIIing your NanoSynlh via MIDI.
NOTE: Anolher possilIe source of confusion is lhal lhe fronl paneI knols on lhe NanoBass and
NanoIiano operale jusl a IillIe differenlIy lhan lhe fronl paneI of lhe NanoSynlh, lecause (1) lhose
unils onIy respond on one MIDI channeI al a line, and (2) lhey arenl organized around lhe eighl-
prograns-per calegory slruclure nandaled ly CeneraI MIDI.
CONTROLLER 0 vs. CONTROLLER 32: Sone sequencers aulonalicaIIy use ConlroIIer 32 connands
for seIecling lanks on an inslrunenl. IIease le avare lhal lhe NanoSynlh does nc| respond lo
ConlroIIer 32 connands. The onIy vay lo seIecl lanks on a NanoSynlh via MIDI is lo use ConlroIIer O.
The Not-So-Basics
I nenlioned earIier lhal using MIDI gives you reaI-line conlroI over Iols nore progran paranelers
lhan you can adjusl fron lhe fronl paneI. Here Id Iike lo encourage you lo experinenl vilh jusl lhal.
Sending Mod WheeI dala, for exanpIe, does sone very neal lhings in various prograns. In sone (Iike
nosl of lhe eIeclric pianos) il viII adjusl lrenoIo. In organs il viII speed up and sIov dovn lhe IezIie
speaker effecl. In olher prograns il viII open lhe fiIler for a nice uaaan sound. Try il and see.
Bul donl slop lhere. The four MIDI conlroIIers used across lhe loard in lhe AIesis QS series of
synlhesizers can yieId greal resuIls, loo, assuning lhe progran is designed lo respond lo lhen. These
conlroIIers are 12 (oflen fiIler conlroI), 13, 91, and 93.
NOTE: The NanoSynlh conforns lo lhe CeneraI MIDI spec, vhich officiaIIy idenlifies conlroIIer 91 for
reverl and conlroIIer 93 for chorus. Bul donl forgel lhal vhiIe lhe NanoSynlh is nuIlilinlraI, il
onIy offers one effecl al a line ~ lhe effecl lhal is parl of lhe progran assigned lo MIDI channeI 1.
Which nay nol le reverl, depending on lhe progran. ConlroIIer 91 can le used lo conlroI lhe per-
