Multimodal has teamed up with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), as well as the Freight Transport Association (FTA) to bring you The Supply Chain Best Practice Seminars. The Air Freight Stream, in association with The Loadstar, will tackle key trends and issues in the industry and focus on a new FTA report into UK air freight shippers needs. The Knowledge Lounge Sessions will give visitors an opportunity to meet the experts behind the white papers hosted on the Knowledge Bank area of our website. Trade Extensions will once again be offering visitors the opportunity of taking part in the classic Supply Chain Simulation the MIT Beer Game. l HRH The Princess Royal will visit Multimodal and attend a special panel for the charity Transaid of which she is a patron.

Speaker Biographies
Steve Agg, Chief Executive, FCILT
Steve, a well-known figure in logistics, supply chain and public transport circles, joined the Institute in May 2006. He is based at the Institutes Corby headquarters. His role means he meets frequently with politicians and business leaders to ensure transport infrastructure remains a key priority in keeping the UKs economy moving. He has overseen the successful merger of other Institutes and training organisations into the CILT family. Before taking on the role of Chief Executive he was most recently in the high-profile post of Managing Director Business Services for the Freight Transport Association. Prior to this he was UK Distribution Director for Danone. Steve is a long-time member of the Institute and is committed to raising the profile and status of all individuals working in the logistics and transport profession. China presents to Western brands, including latterly eCommerce channels, to help them launch and build market share. Recently returned to the UK, Damian is responsible for ACS growing eCommerce product portfolio, designed to support a multi-channel strategy in China.

Martijn Blansjaar, Head of Logistics and Supply, Oxfam


Martijn started in humanitarian assistance with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF)-Holland in 1987. He spent seven years in programmes of MSF and other agencies around the world working in logistics, technical and project coordination positions and as Head of Mission. In 1994 he joined MSF-Holland HQ Logistics Department for special assignments, a/o on pharmaceutical distributions, became Coordinator Technical Support in 1997 and Director of Logistics from March 2001. In November 2006, he joined Oxfam GBs International Division as Head of Logistics and Supply. Outside his regular jobs he has been active since 2003 in various initiatives on the professionalisation and development of Humanitarian Logistics.

Damian Beswick, Lead Development eCommerce Products, Allport Cargo Services


Damian has worked in China for 20 years, the last 14 with Allport Cargo Services, across many locations, primarily Shanghai and Hong Kong. A fluent Mandarin speaker Damian has used his detailed experience of the unique challenges that

Clive Brady, Group VAT & Duty Manager, Wincanton


Clive has specific responsibility for all duty and excise matters across Wincanton, ensuring the company complies with the HMRC requirement of right duty at the right time and providing guidance on HMRC-related matters. A committee member of The Bonded Warehouse Keepers Association and an accountant by profession, Clive has been with Wincanton since April 2003.

Vincent Champion, Consulting Editor, WorldCargo News


Vincent was a co-founder of WorldCargo News/WCN Publishing in 1994 and Editorial Director until 2010, since when he has been Consulting Editor of WorldCargo News without any change to his work content, specialising in cargo handling equipment, green technologies, port and intermodal reports. From 1984 to 1994 he was with Cargo Systems International and was that magazines editor from 1990.

Captain Richard Brough OBE BA AFNI, ICHCA


Captain Richard Brough started his career with the British Merchant Navy in 1969, coming ashore in 1989. After working in managerial positions for various companies, he eventually became Managing Director for Northern Cargo Services Ltd. At this time he was appointed a board member of British Ports Industry Training and pioneered ports vocational qualifications and became a founder board member of Port Skills and Safety Ltd. In 2004 he set up his own company, Brough Marine Limited, offering professional advice to companies in the ports and logistics sector. In 2007 he formed UK Port Services Ltd (UKPS), which in 2008 became Jenkins Port Services Ltd. Richard later re-formed Brough Marine and in 2011 was appointed Technical Advisor to ICHCA International Ltd. In 2013 became ICHCAs Technical and Admin Director. He was awarded an OBE in 2011 for services to Learning and Skills in the Humber Region.

Mark Crook, Product Development/Customs Manager, CORE (UK) Ltd


Mark has 15 years experience in the preshipment inspection industry working within Customs classification and valuation regimes, producing and presenting courses for Customs authorities in developing countries. Recently he joined CORE (UK) Ltd as Product Development/Customs Manager. CORE is a solutions provider developing tools to improve accuracy, compliance and automate Customs classification of imports/exports.

Stewart Ferguson, West Midlands Representative and Head of Research and Consultancy, China-Britain Business Council
Stewart began learning Chinese at the age of 16 and after graduating from Durham University in Oriental Studies worked for both Hong Kong and Taiwan invested companies in the UK. Prior to joining CBBC three years ago, Stewart lived and worked in Guangzhou for eight years where he was General Manager for a Taiwanese export orientated manufacturer. Stewart has an indepth knowledge of both the opportunities and the issues UK companies may face when developing business in China. Located in Rugby, Stewart covers the West Midlands, Wales and South West England.

Stephen Carr, Head of Commercial Strategy, Peel Ports Group


Stephen has been Head of Commercial Strategy since January 2013. He joined Peel Ports in 2009 as Head of Business Development for the Mersey Division where he led the team with a new approach to market, targeting importers and exports, whilst launching numerous products and services that add value to and remove inefficiency from the supply chain. During this period, he was instrumental in evolving the Liverpool2 strategy, developing the container service along Manchester Ship canal whilst developing and upgrading offers in other commodity areas too. Prior to working at Peel Ports, Stephens career spanned both sales and supply chain roles with both BP and TDG.

Gary Forster, Chief Executive, Transaid


Gary has been Chief Executive of the international development charity since April 2011. Having joined Transaid in 2006, initially as a volunteer, Gary managed projects for the organisation in Zambia until 2008 and then in Northern Nigeria until 2010. Prior to working for Transaid, Gary was a logistician for Procter and Gamble based in its Bournemouth distribution centre where he supported the European Chemicals Customer Service Team by monitoring KPIs, establishing SLAs with 3PLs and investigating non-conformances.

Dorothea Carvalho, Professional Development Project Director, Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport
Dorothea is responsible for the development of new projects within the Institute. Dorotheas professional background is in training and developing people, with a significant proportion of her early career spent overseas. She is the Institutes liaison person for universities, humanitarian logistics and professional standards.

Ralph Goldney, Managing Director, Railfreight Consulting


Ralph set up Railfreight Consulting four years ago to give independent, expert advice to existing and potential future clients and users of rail freight. The business is thriving with clients in both the Heavy Haul and Intermodal sectors, and also in the infrastructure management /terminal ownership area. Prior to that he was the Deputy Managing Director of GB Railfreight, where he had responsibility for all commercial and engineering matters. Ralph is a Fellow of both the Institutions of Civil and Mechanical Engineers and also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transportation. He has an MBA from Henley Management College.

Sharon James, Dockers Section Secretary, ITF


Sharon has worked for the ITF since 2003, first in the seafarers section and later as assistant secretary of the dockers section. She has also been the assistant secretary of the ITFs civil aviation section, giving her a broad knowledge of the transport sector. Prior to that she was an international policy officer for the UK Trades Union Congress. Sharon James trained as a lawyer.

Nigel Jenney, Chief Executive, FPC


Nigel heads up the FPC executive team providing strategic leadership to effect growth and increased membership. He joined the Fresh Produce Consortium as Chief Executive in 2004. To assist in representing the UK fresh produce industry, Nigel also holds nonexecutive directorships on the following boards: Freshfel (EU Trade Association for fresh produce) in Brussels; Gangmaster Licensing Authority (GLA); International Federation for Produce Standards (IFPS); and the New Covent Garden Market Authority Board (CGMA). Nigel began his career with the Department of Agriculture & Fisheries for Scotland, working with the diversity of the Glasgow Wholesale Market before moving to Aberdeen.

Matthew Gore, Senior Associate, Holman Fenwick Willan LLP


Matthew specialises in transactional corporate and commercial law. His practice spans a wide range of international corporate and commercial transactions, including acquisitions and disposals of businesses, assets and shares; joint ventures; corporate law issues; and commercial contracts. Matthew has particular experience of international projects including corporate and commercial transactions in a number of different sectors especially ports and terminals and shipping. He is also a member of HFWs Ports & Terminals and Logistics & Liner Shipping Groups. Matthew has worked on a large number of corporate and commercial matters including many commercial contracts for shippers, shipping lines and terminal operators. He has particular experience in drafting and negotiating sea freight framework agreements.

Justin Kirkhope, Project Manager - Logistics Strategy, The Co-operative Food


Justin joined The Co-operative Group in 1994 as a Graduate Management Trainee. Prior to this, he studied Business Organisation at HeriotWatt University and in his final year published a joint paper with Prof Dr Alan McKinnon on Improving the Fuel Efficiency of Road Freight Operations. Following several years as Regional Transport Manager for Scotland, Justin has more recently been working on implementing transport operations in The Co-operative Foods new composite DC network. Justin has also been responsible for introducing modal shift within The Co-operatives network, and chairs the Groups Logistics Carbon Forum.

Chris Harrison, Director, Global Corporates,Trade and Working Capital, Barclays


Chris has worked in international trade for nearly 30 years rising to Trade Director in Lloyds Bank in 2009. During his time with Lloyds, Chris worked across different business segments from SME to Global Corporate and ran the International Business Centre Leeds after spells in Operations, Legal and the Trade Centre of Excellence in Birmingham. In 2011 he joined Barclays to run the Global Corporate Trade & Working Capital Origination Team based in Canary Wharf.

Tristan Koch, Managing Director Cargo Sales EMEA, American Airlines


After studying for an MSc in Environmental Economics, Tristan began his career as a Policy Advisor at the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. This was followed by 11 years with British Airways in a number of senior positions with a specialism in partnerships, reorganisation and business restructuring. Today he is based at London Heathrow and since 2011 has been responsible for all American Airlines Cargo activity across UK, Europe, Africa and Middle East. That includes not only the carriers general cargo but also specialist products such as Expedite TC and its GSSA network.

Peter Huggins, The Knowledge Centre Manager, CILT(UK)


Peter is responsible for developing, maintaining and improving The Knowledge Centres information services in Corby to ensure an effective provision for all members, staff and the paying public. Having joined the Institute in 2000, he has seen The Knowledge Centre grow from a purely traditional paper-based collection to the largest collection of logistics and transport-related resources in Europe. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP).

Nigel Kotani, company commercial lawyer, Excello Law


Nigel covers general corporate transactional and commercial contract work, including UK and cross-border company and business acquisitions and disposals, management buyouts, group restructurings, private equity investment, private and public equity fundraising, joint ventures, supply and distribution agreements, outsourcing contracts and IT contracts. Alex Lennane, The Loadstar


Alex launched The Loadstar blog in March 2011. It was well-received by the industry, which triggered its transformation into the new site. Alex is an experienced writer on aviation and logistics, with many contacts throughout the air cargo industry, and she edits the quarterly magazine Airline Cargo Management. She is also Europe editor for the Seattle-based subscription news service Cargo Facts. She has freelanced for IFW, HeavyLiftPFI and Cargo Systems, among other publications. After introducing steel fibre concrete to the Irish market in the 1990s, involvement in the BT, Hilton Towers and design of Belfasts Waterfront Hall, Tim moved to Cip Ltd to design and a install Tom Roes Point container terminal pavement in Drogheda, the first major project utilising Grouted Macadam. At 20,000 sq m, it was the largest project in Grouted Macadam at that time in the UK and Ireland. During the 2000s, he developed soil stabilisation within the Irish and Scottish markets. Paul McMahon, Freight Director, Network Rail

He was General Manager with BT Rolatruc from 1969 to 1986 when he became Managing Director of Hako UK and built it into the market leader. Theos early career was spent in sales and marketing with brand leading food and drink manufacturers Heinz and Diageo. Gary has almost 30 years experience in the Aviation industry and extensive experience in both the Ground Handling and Cargo markets in the UK. Marco joined Cordstrap in 2001. Prior to that, he was an international truck driver for a global moving company for 11 years and before that, he was a driving instructor. He trains Cordstrap customers, distributors, and cargo securing experts. Phil has been in the air freight industry since 1971 working for forwarders, firstly, and then airlines initially in operations and since 1974 in sales. He spent the last 15 years as Cargo Manager UK for Emirates and has seen them grow from a fiveflight a day operation from Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester to a 16 flights per day from six departure points business, plus two weekly freighters, with the network growing similarly.

Mark Simmons, HR and HSE Director, Norbert Dentressangle Logistics UK


Mark joined Norbert Dentressangle (then Christian Salvesen) in December 2004 as HR Business Partner for Transport UK. Less than a year later (October 2005) he was promoted to his current role as HR Director for Logistics UK. Mark is the HR & QHSE Director of the UK Logistics Business covering in excess of 130 sites and 11,500 colleagues, playing a key role as part of the UK Executive team. Key responsibilities include the setting, development and execution of the HR & People Strategy for the UK operations. Mark is a strong communicator, negotiator and influencer who can tackle complex issues and translate Business goals into practical strategies. Mark, is an experienced and professionally qualified HR professional, with significant hands-on change management experience gained within commercially focused, manufacturing, FMCG and logistics environments. He started his career as a graduate with Proctor & Gamble, and later developed his HR career at The Body Shop and Revlon International, having graduated from Leeds University with a Degree in English.

Peter Ward, Cargo Supply Chain Commercial Director, DP World London Gateway
Peter has over 30 years experience in international freight forwarding, global logistics and supply chain management. He is recognised as a principal authority on maritime intensive supply chains and logistics based on his achievements at Director level with some of the worlds leading global logistics providers. A graduate of the Institute of Export and Member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, Peters career started in the export shipping department of Courtaulds PLC, before he joined his familys freight forwarding company, DH Ward (Shipping) Ltd, where he became Managing Director. In 1994 he masterminded the Companys merger with American-owned Fritz Companies, which under his leadership became a top-five forwarder in Europe. Peregrine Storrs-Fox, TT Club Risk Management Director,Thomas Miller & Co Ltd


Peregrine read Law at Southampton University, specialising in the law of carriage and international trade. He has been with the TT Club since 1984, firstly handling claims and providing advice to all types of transport and logistics operators, until the late 1990s when he was directing claims operations worldwide for the Club. Since 2002, Peregrine has led the TT Clubs internal risk management framework as well as directing its loss prevention services. In this latter role he has developed links with like-minded trade organisations and NGOs with a view to promoting good practice in health and safety matters as well as general operations. The Club publishes loss prevention briefings and handbooks on many operational issues.

Miles Warren, Managing Director, ACB


ACB was incorporated in 1997 to provide a multitude of industries with recycling and disposal options for their redundant radioactive material. After several years of military service, Miles spent time in the metal recycling sector before turning his hand to radioactive material management. His professional experience includes Radioactive Waste Adviser recognition, trained Radiation Protection Supervisor, and ADR Classes 7 and 9 licence holder, as well as providing in-depth guidance to the Home Office concerning portal monitoring implementation at key UK points of entry.

Chris has particular responsibility for executing the companys strategic partnership with the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) in the field of Disaster Management. Chris is British, based in Brussels and has 25 years experience in Express Logistics, although now he focuses on developing the DHL/UN partnership as a model for other companies to successfully help in the humanitarian arena. He has firsthand experience of airport logistics following many major disasters, including the Asian Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, 2011 floods in Pakistan and earthquakes in Kashmir, Peru, Indonesia, Haiti and Chile. Chris Welsh, Director of Global and European Policy, FTA


Chris has held a variety of senior management roles for the UK Freight Transport Association and is a member of FTAs Board. He is currently Director of Global & European Policy at the FTA where he is responsible for FTAs maritime, rail and aviation policy. This includes responsibility for FTAs Brussels operations. Chris is also Secretary General of the Global Shippers Forum which is administered by FTA. From 1997-2002 Chris was Secretary General of the European Shippers Council where he played a prominent role in deregulating EU shipping and air cargo markets, spearheading a series of successful maritime legal cases culminating in the repeal of anti-trust immunity for liner shipping conferences in 2006. Chris holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA), is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), and a Member of the Chartered Management Institute (MCMI).

Trade Extensions Supply Chain Simulation Sessions


Sourcing and supply chain specialist Trade Extensions is continuing its sponsorship of the Shippers Village and Carriers Pavilion at Multimodal 2014 and in addition it is offering visitors the opportunity to participate in the classic supply chain challenge The Beer Game. The Beer Game simulates a simplified supply chain manufacturing and distributing beer and demonstrates some the fundamental challenges of supply chain management. Participants assume one of four roles Manufacturer, Distributor Wholesaler or Retailer and the objective is for each role to minimise their costs while fulfilling the orders they receive.
