Date: Coop. Initials 60 Grade Level Section Third Grade

Allotted Time

Subject or Topic: __Mixtures and Solutions

STANDARD: 3.2.1.A1: Observe and describe the properties of liquids and solids. Investigate what happens when solids are mixed with water and other liquids are mixed with water. 3.2.1.A3: Identify how heating, melting, cooling, etc., may cause changes in properties of materials. I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes): The students will be able to communicate the differences of mixtures and solutions when asked by the teacher. II. Instructional Materials - All Mixed Up! Worksheet (one per student) - Inquiry sheet (one per student) - Mix and Match worksheet (one per student) - Vocabulary sheet (one per student) - Sand - Sugar - Soil - Salt - Oil - Vinegar - Tomato soup - Water - Lemon juice - 6 cups per group III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea) A. Prerequisite Skills 1. Fine motor skills. 2. Previous knowledge of water.

3. Previous knowledge of solids, liquids and gases. B. Key Vocabulary - Mixture A combination of two or more different types of materials. - Solution One substance that dissolves into another substance. - Solubility The amount of solute that can be dissolved by the solvent. - Solute The substance to be dissolved. - Solvent The substance doing the dissolving. - Substance Anything that contains only one kind of material. C. Big Idea - Know the difference between mixtures and solutions. IV. Implementation A. Introduction - The teacher will say, Can anyone tell me what we learned about yesterday? - Yesterday we talked about solids, liquids and gases. Did you know that you can mix them together and possibly make a whole new solution? Well that is what we are going to look at today, mixtures and solutions B. Development - On each of the tables there will be a tray of materials. The tray will include sugar, soil, sand, salt, oil, lemon juice, water, tomato soup and vinegar. - Instruct the students not to touch the materials but to observe what is on the tray. - Since yesterday the class talked about solids, liquids and gases review what each material is to keep the students thinking about the previous topic. - After talking about the materials the teacher will show the students a PowerPoint on mixtures and solutions and all the parts included. - The students will be given a vocabulary sheet with all of the words they will use during this lesson since the majority of the words are very similar. - While going through the lesson the teacher will instruct the students to write down examples next to each of the vocabulary words so that when they are doing their science inquiry they will have an example sheet to refer back to. - The PowerPoint will start off with the definition of mixtures. - After going over the first part of the slide as the students to try and name some mixtures that they may see in everyday life (Make a list on the board). - Make it a point to the students that a new substance is not formed. - The teacher will pass out a worksheet called Mix and match. The students will have to match the four different mixtures to the four ways you can separate a mixture. - The teacher will have the students use a blue marker to correct their answers. - As a class go over the answers and talk about why they choose each method. - After going on the worksheet the teacher will collect it for a form a formative assessment. - The next slide will be talking about solutions.

- When talking about separating solutions mention that we will be talking about separating solutions tomorrow. - The teacher will ask the students if they can name any solutions (Make a list on the board). - When talking about solubility the teacher will tell the students that there is usually more solvent than solute. - The teacher will give the students different types of solutions relating it back to solids, liquids and gases (on PowerPoint). - Students will complete an inquiry called All mixed up! - The students will have a worksheet that they are to complete the true and false questions (skip the first one about sand and boiling water). - After the students complete the worksheet they will be testing the solutions and mixtures to see if their answers were correct. - The students will complete the inquiry sheet and as a class you will discuss the results. C. Closure - The class will have a group discussion of everything that was talked about in todays lesson. - Answer any questions that the students have. - As an exit slip the teacher will give the students a note card that has a mixture of solution written on the one side and the students will have to determine if it is a mixture or solution. - The teacher will say, Tomorrow we will be talking about our final topic in this unit. The topic will be heating and cooling. Be prepared for a short quiz at the end of the lesson. D. Accommodations/Differentiation - John (mild visual impairment) Printed out notes from the PowerPoint will be provided. - Notes will be printed out with a larger font. - If John cannot read the inquiry sheets the teacher will have the class work in partners. - Preferential seating. E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan 1. Formative Using a checklist the teacher will collect both the Mix and Match worksheet and the All mixed up inquiry sheet. 2. Summative No summative assessment for this lesson.

V. Reflective Response A. Report of Students Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (after lesson is taught)

Remediation Plan 1. What can I do different to better the students?

2. Did the vocabulary sheet help the students better understand the words? 3. Was All mixed up a good inquiry to use for this topic? B. Personal Reflection
