Multiculturalism: *The study of a variety of cultures by examining their different characteristics and traits. * A multicultural perspective provides a way of understanding ourselves (through reflection), encouraging us to look at how our own values and perspectives affect how we view others. Intercultural competence (ICC): * The ability to behave appropriately and effectively with people from other cultures "knowing when to say what to whom." Culture shock: *A state of bewilderment and distress experienced by an individual who is suddenly exposed to a new, strange, or foreign social and cultural environment. Adaptation: *The state of being adapted; adjustment. Assimilation: * The act or process of assimilating; state or condition of being assimilates. Acculturation: * The process of adopting the cultural traits or social patterns of another group. Enculturation: * The process whereby individuals learn their group's culture, through experience, observation, and instruction.

Culture: * Culture is a learned set of shared interpretations about beliefs, norms, and social practices , which affect the behaviors of a relatively large of people. Beliefs: * Beliefs refer to the basic understanding of a group of people about what the world is like or what is true or false. Values: * Values refer to what a group of people defines as good and bad or what it regards as important. Norms: *Norms refers to rules for appropriate behavior, which provide the expectations people have of one another and themselves. Social practices: *Social practices are the predictable behavior patterns that members of a culture typically follow. Nation: * Nation is a political term referring to a government and a set of formal and legal mechanism that regulate the political behavior of its people. Race: * Race commonly refers to certain physical similarities, such as skin color or eye shape, that are shared by a group of people, and are used to mark or separate them from others. Ethnicity: *Ethnicity is actually a term that is used to refer to a wide variety of groups who might share a language, historical origins, religion, nation-state, or culture system.

Display of respect: * The ability to show respect and positive regard for other people and their cultures. Orientation to knowledge: * The recognition that individuals' experiences shape what they know. Empathy: * The capacity to behave as though you understand the world as others do. Interaction management: * Skill in regulating conversations and thinking turns. Task role behavior: * Behaviors that involve initiation of ideas related to group problem-solving activities. Relational role behavior: * Behaviors associated with interpersonal harmony and mediation. Tolerance to ambiguity: * The ability to react to new and ambiguous situations with little visible discomfort. Interaction posture: * The ability to respond to others in descriptive, non-evaluative, and nonjudgmental ways. The Tapestry: * A tapestry is a decorative cloth made up of many strands of thread. The Garden Salad: * Like A garden salad made up of many distinct ingredients that are being tossed continuously, some see the United States as made up of a complex array of distinct cultures that are blended into a unique, and one hopes tasteful, mixture. Communication: * Communication is a symbolic, interpretive, transactional, contextual, process in which people create shared meanings Symbols: * It is a word, action, or object that stands for a represent a unit of meaning. Meaning: * It is a perception, thoughts, or feeling that a person experience. Context: * All communication takes place within a setting or situation.
