DEPARTMENT OF LAW
INTRODUCTION

The Department of Law at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur was founded in

1979. Since that time, it has developed into one of the most successful institution
of law in Pakistan. It has also pioneered in introducing English language as a
medium of instruction since 1999.
The Department is located at the Abbasia Campus in the heart of the city and it
enjoys a very close partnership with District Courts, High Court Bench and local
Bar Associations. Some very experienced lawyers are associated with the
Department as its adjunct faculty.
The Department of Law has a deserved reputation for providing critical legal
education. It offers a congenial environment for the pursuit of teaching and
research, both of which are carried out with considerable emphasis on teamwork
and collaboration, which helps the students to complete their studies well in time.
The Department has been producing quality lawyers, judges and attorneys.
Sufficient number of law graduates is serving both in public and private sectors.

VISION / MISSION STATEMENT

The Department of Law has a distinctive approach to legal teaching and research,
based on the critical and comparative study of legal rules and doctrines in their
social, political and economic context. The core mission of the Department is to
provide legal education of the highest quality. The purpose of this education also
includes character building and boosting up the talent of the young law graduates
to enable them to become model character for pursuance of others.

PROGRAM(S) OFFERED

The Department of Law offers three years full time LLB program of total 124
credit hours. At present, it has 245 students enrolled in LLB program. In the near
future, the Department has planned to start two years LLM program.
A law student does not simply learn the law in the sense of memorizing a vast
quantity of specific rules. Of course, an accurate recall of some rules is important,
but if the study of law began and ended with this then a law degree would be of
very limited and ephemeral value. All substantive rules of law are potentially
obsolescent. Accordingly, a vital element in legal education is the inculcation of a
willingness not only to tolerate and adapt to constant change but, if necessary, to
demand and initiate it.
Admission Criteria:
The admission regulations are mentioned in the prospectus (which is published
annually) which is approved by the Advisory Committee of the Islamia University
of Bahawalpur and implemented with strict co-relevance to the university
admission policy formed by the University Admission Committee. Students are
presumed to study these regulations before they apply for admission. The detail
of admission rules and regulations can be found in the university prospectus
which can be obtained from the Academic Branch / Store and Purchase Section of
the university or it may be downloaded from the university website at the
following location:

STRATIGIC PLAN TO ACHIEVE PROGRM MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

The main elements of the present strategic plan to achieve program mission and
objectives are as follows:
1. The curriculum has been design in a way which makes it possible to achieve
the desired objectives. A wide variety of core and elective subjects are being
offered which brings diversity in the program. For example, the subjects of
legal ethics and Islamic Law and Jurisprudence play an important role in
character building and to create a sense of responsibility. The subjects of
Conveyancing and Pleadings train the students to draft their briefs.
The subjects like Jurisprudence, Contract Law, Tort Law, etc. provide the basic
legal concepts and enhance the legal acumen of the students to get them
ready for the Law profession. Similarly, Procedural laws are taught to the
students to get them acquainted with the legal proceeding and its relative
incidents.
In short, the curriculum has all the features and flavors which may help to
produce good lawyers for the society. In this way the proposed objectives are
attained through curriculum design.
2.

The study of case law is made compulsory for the students. The faculty is
presumed to incorporate the case law into their course outline and discuss and
analyze the relevant case law during their lectures.

3. The implementation of the curriculum is practiced through lectures, seminars,

workshops, discussions, examinations, etc.
4. The study of law is effect and cause based, which is helpful to make the
approach of the students rational and logical.
5.

The law library has been proved as an effective tool to achieve the set
goals as it is assisting the students and the faculty very well.

6. Some other activities and steps are also taken to achieve our set goals, for
example, writing assignments, conducting surprise tests and quizzes, class
presentations, etc.

7. The faculty and the students are encouraged to conduct research and to get
their research published. This may enhance the vision of the faculty and the

8
students which is necessary to achieve the prescribed targets. It is worth
mentioning that a paper of legal research is also included in the syllabi to
teach the students research techniques.
8. Law-moots, court and jail visits are conducted and facilitated for the students
so that they may get a chance to compare and apply their theoretical
knowledge towards the given facts.
9. Co-curricular activities like sports, academic competitions, participating in
national and international contests and exhibitions are also done to facilitate
the students in their personality building.

CURRICULUM DESIGN AND ORGANIZATION

The curriculum for LLB program has been approved by the Board of Studies of the
Department of Law in the light of guidelines prescribed by the Higher Education
Commission of Pakistan. There are six semesters having a total of 124 credit
