TREATMENT SCHEME

Treatment Abstract:
The treatment process was designed to treat domestic sewage with an anticipated BOD
of 450mg/l.

The treatment capacity of the plant is so designed, for per day 100 thousands litres
with an operational time of 16 hrs. Plant can even treat double of its capacity during the time of
emergency like rains fall etc., with additional operation time.

The processes (procedure) adapted are purely biological i.e. reducing the BOD or
organic matters using different strains of beneficial bacteria in two steps followed by particle
filtration and gas absorption. Sterilization using chlorine.

PROCESS SCHEME
Water from the different Locations at M/S Rane (Madras) Ltd., Site,Velachery will be
collected in a common sump. (Collected effluents will be passed through a screening chamber which
can retain large sized particles). After screening the effluent will be subjected to the equalization
tank provided with coarse aeration and circulation pumps to neutralize the characteristics. . The
equalized effluent will be pumped to the aeration tank.

The effluent will undergo a process of mineralization in the aeration tank with a hydraulic
retention time of minimum 4 hrs maintaining optimum level of oxygen by diffuse aeration from the
bottom. The aeration tank will also provided with bio fills to increase the surface area for attached
microorganisms growth and also with a sludge circulation pump.

After a very good reduction of BOD the effluents will be passed the Setting tank to remove
the sludge. The sedimented sludge will be rooted to the sludge filter. The treated effluent will be
sterilized using chlorine and passed through the particle filter (sand) to remove suspended particles.
From the sand filter, the treated effluent will be passed through carbon filter for chlorine and
ammonia absorption. The effluent coming out of the carbon filter will be clear, odourless and can
be used for gardening, Ground level recharge and other purposes.

TREATMENT DESCRIPTION

1. Screening:

Done in the screening chamber to retain large sized particles, which cannot be
equalized and digested

2. Equalization:

The effluent produced at different points and at different times may have different
characters. Equalization is done with the help of (coarse diffusers) and circulation
pump to neutralize the characteristics. Approximately 15 to 20 % of the BOD is also
reduced.

3. Aerobic digestion: (Aeration)

After equalization the effluent is aerobically digested in aeration tank. In the aeration
tank the effluent after equalization in a given heavy diffusion aerator from the bottom
of the aeration tank is then passed for aerobic digestion. Nirtosomonas and Nitrobactor
strains of beneficial bacteria added to the tank digest the organic matter to carbon,
nitrogen and hydrogen, thus reducing the BOD to a great extent (80 to 95%). Biofills
added to these tanks increase the surface area for digestion (promote attachment
growth). Circulation pump provided to this aeration tank keeps the organic matters
suspended, which fastens the digestion. Food to microorganism ration of 0.3 is
maintained; by keeping the DO level at 1.5 to 2.5 ppm

4. Sedimentation tank (settling tank):

The effluent after a strong mineralization in the aeration tank is allowed to settle with
the aid of flocculant (Flocculation) which helps in fast settlement. The
settled sludge is transferred to the sludge drier and certain percentage of sludge is
recirculated to aeration tank to maintain the M.L.S.S.

5. Sterilization (chlorination):

Liquid chlorine is used as the sterilizer to reduce the microbial load. Chlorine being an
oxidizing agent can even reduce organic carbon and odour to a fair extent.

6. Storage:

The effluent from the sedimentation tank is stored in a storage tank and used after
filtration when ever necessary.

7. Filteration:

Pressure Sand Filter: The Sterilized effluent pumped by a pump to the sand filter for
removal of coagulated particles and suspended solids to achieve filtered water.

Activated Carbon Filter: The filtered water passed through carbon filter for the
removal of residual chlorine and toxic gases and bad odour. The coming out effluent
will be clear and odurles.
