Supplement to Mounce Ch.

34
After this chapter, you should be able to
Recognize, parse, and translate the indicative forms of Understand and explain the five rules of verbs (34.6-10) Translate and parse verbs as in Exercise 34

Tips for mastering the material

Learn the rules and the verbs will be no problem. Since youre already learned the entire verb system, adding on a few rules to explain verbs is no big deal especially when you realize that you could probably parse most of the forms of based on what you already know. The non-indicative forms will appear in the next chapter, so all you have to learn for now are the indicative forms.

Chapter 34 Walkthrough
34.6 Rule One
The present tense of mi verbs is the one that will look the most different from what were used to, this is because the present tense will undergo reduplication with an iota, so the verbal root will be somewhat obscured. However, if you know the root of the verb and you know that the present undergoes this change, then recognition is actually pretty simple: anytime you see you know youre looking at the present tense stem (which means the verb must be either present or imperfect [if it has an augment]).

34.7 Rule Two

If you look at the chart in 34.11, youll see that there are some exceptions to this rule: the future and imperfect tenses actually have endings that youre used to seeing in the thematic conjugation (in other words, they actually do use a connecting vowel!).

34.8 Rule Three

Most people dont have a problem recognizing the 1st sg ending, since its the one youll see in the lexical form. However, the 3rd sg and 3rd pl endings in the present active indicative can give students problemslearn them now to avoid confusion. Thankfully, these are the only new endings youll need to learn as all the others will be the same as what you already know.

34.9 Rule Four

The lengthening of a stem vowel is hardly something you need a rule for, but there it is.

34.10 Rule Five

This rule means that youll simply have to rely upon the augment/reduplication to differentiate the aorist and the perfect, not too bad.

34.11 Indicative Paradigm

Go through the paradigm and see if you can recognize the application of the different rules. The changes may look strange at first, but try to understand the reasons for the changes and that will help with your recognition and parsing.
