1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

1.1 AUTOREFRACTOMETER

1.1.1 PRINCIPLES OF MEASUREMENT

The auto-refractometer function of the L62-3d can objectively measure ametropy of
the human eye.

The principle of measurement is that of direct retinsocopy.

The auto-refractometer generates a series of lines, alternatively light or dark, at a
constant speed, which light up the patient's retina.

The retina reflects these slits of light, the position of which depends on his ametropy.
This image is infinity if the patient is emetropic, real if he is myopic, and virtual if he is
hypermetropic.

A lens gives it an image which is always real, with a position and magnification
depending on the ametropy. A diaphragm placed at the focal point of the lens
produces an alternating slit of light for each lighted line of the image.

The speed at which this pencil of light scans a surface placed the other side of the
hole is proportional to the ametropy of the eye, in regard to the meridian in which the
lines are run across the retina, at a given speed.

AMETROPY CAN THEREFORE BE MEASURED BY THE SPEED OF SCANNNG

The optical system which permit these lines to be run across the retina is made up of
a point-like source, a condensor which forms the image of this source in the eye's pupil
and a drum with slits (chopper) turning at a constant speed.

The captor which permits the measurement of the scanning speed of the pencil of
light formed by the hole, is made up of two photodiodes separated by a space and
giving two electrical impulses when the spot passes.

The measurement of the time separating these impulses gives the speed and
therefore the ametropy of the eye.

To determine astigmatism, three parameters must be measured :

- the two refractions along the main meridians,
- the axis.

A series of slits at 45 (4), 90 (1) and 135 (4) in the chopper give the equation necessary
to determine these three parameters.
The measurement of an eye's ametropy must be made without accommodation. The
L62-3d incorporates a system which relaxes the eye's fixation similarly to physiological
relaxation. This system is made up of a target, which is motorized to move in relation
to the ametropic measurements, in order to "pull" accommodation until the ametropy
measured no longer increases.

1.2 KERATOMETRY

1.2.1 PRINCIPLES OF MEASUREMENT

The principle on which this measurement is based is the reflexion of a circle of light on the
cornea.
The corneal mirror is an optical system which gives an image of a circle of light, the size of
which depend on the radii of the corneal mirror.
f there is no astigmatism, the image is a circle.
f there is corneal astigmatism, the image is deformed and gives an ellipse with the same
axes as the astigmatism.
The basic principle is therefore to identify the parameters of this ellipse in order to deduct the
required information.
The optical image given by the cornea is carried by an optical system to a CCD matrix
camera. The electronic video signal given off by the camera, describing an image in full, is
made up of two successive series ( frames ) of 312 video lines , each representing a
horizontal line of the image. The whiter the image, the stronger the electronic signal.
A video line, seen on the oscilloscope, has two peaks, one corresponding to the right of the
image, the other to the left.
An electronic system, in conjunction with a micro-computer, means that the various
parameters of the image reflected by the cornea can be calculted, from the position of the
peaks on each of the video lines.
The circle of light reflected by the cornea is produced by a flash from a ring-shaped flash
tube, placed behind a mask in the shape of two semi-circles.
