Welcome to Bharathiar University, named after the revolutionary national poet Subramaniya Bharathi
who,through his poetry, ignited the human mind and widened its horizons. Bharathiar University has been
offering quality learning and research experience to its students for the past 31 years. The university has

The Bharathiar University, named after the great visionary and a revolutionary National Poet,
Subramania Bharathi was established in Coimbatore at the foothills of Maruthamalai by the
Government of Tamilnadu in February 1982, with jurisdiction over the districts of Coimbatore,
Erode, Tiruppur and The Nilgiris. This University is the off spring of the world renowned
University of Madras. `
This University has its principles enshrined with the lofty motto "Educate to EIevate". Every
effort is harnessed to realize the dreams of the poet of making Educational institutions a temple
of learning. lt is the aim of the University to participate in the task of inculcating necessary
knowledge, skills and creative attitudes and values among the youth of this country, to contribute
more effectively towards establishing an equitable social and economic order and the secular
ideals of our Nation.
lt is located in a sprawling area of about 1000 acres free from pollution, 12 kms. away from the
Coimbatore city. The atmosphere is quite serene and ideal for intellectual pursuits. The campus
has a number of well-designed buildings which house various teaching and research schools,
library, nternet centre, administrative offices, hostels and canteens, etc.,
The University is an affiliating type, recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), a
member of the Association of ndian Universities (AU) and Common Wealth Universities. At
present 108 Colleges are affiliated to it. This includes 22 Autonomous colleges, 12 Management
nstitutions, 96 Arts & Science colleges (19 Women's colleges, 85 Co-educational colleges, and
4 men's colleges) including one Airforce Administrative College and two constituent Colleges
and PG Study Centre.
This University has 35 Departments in the campus, dedicated to teaching and research including

Candidates who will be completing their degree programmes during April J May 2014
examinations are also eligible to apply for admission, the applicants will be provisionally
admitted to the courses based on their performance in the entrance test {if applicable) and {or) in
qualifying examination {UG degree course) upto V semester J ll year {for non semester courses).
However, their admissions will be confirmed only if they successfully complete the programme
and satisfy the above eligibility conditions before the commencement of classes.
The candidates should have completed 10+2+3J11+1+3 {15) years of study before admission to
the Post Graduate and PG Diploma courses offered by this university.

ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, EVEN IF THE CANDIDATES
WOULD NOT ATTEND THE CLASSES. ONLY
CAUTION DEPOSIT IS REFUNDABLE.
Candidates desirous of obtaining admission into the PG DegreefPG diploma courses offered in the University
Departments should apply for the same in the prescribed application form which are available in the Bharathiar
University, at a cost of Rs. 300f- to be remitted by a Bank of !ndia Challan (into the Genral fund Account of Bharathiar
University) or a demand draft of any Nationalised Bank, drawn in favour of the Registrar, Bharathiar University
payable at Coimbatore. SCfST candidates have to pay only Rs. 1S0f-provided they produce an attested Photo copy of
hisfher community certificate along with the request for application. The candidates shall send a self addressed
envelope (28 x 13 cms) affixing Rs. 6Of- stamp along with a request. Applicants can also download the application
form from the web site www.b-u.ac.in and submit the application along with a DD for Rs. 300f- as Registration fee
(Rs. 1S0 f- for SC f ST candidates) by means of a Demand Draft drawn in favour of The Registrar, Bharathiar
University payable at Coimbatore.
The application form and the hall-ticket, shall be completed in all respects and sent to Professor and Head,
Department of ............... Bharathiar University Coimbatore - 641 046 on or before 15.05.2014. The
applications shall not be sent to the Registrar. Applications received after the due date will be rejected.
Students can apply for various courses through online also. However fee in this regard will be accepted only through
Bank draft or Bank of lndia challan as indicated above. For further details refer our website : www.b-u.ac.in.

(The above procedure does not apply for N.B.A. and N.C.A. degree courses offered in the University Department and
for all courses offered by the School of Distance Education).
Candidates who are eligible and willing to apply for admission to more than one PG degree and PG diploma courses
shall submit separate applications for each and every course. Application made for admission to one course will not
be considered for any other course.
The application should be accompanied with attested Xerox copies ofthe following certificates.

Selection Procedure for admission by Entrance Test
The selection will be based on the marks scored by the candidates in the entrance test and the average of Narks
secured by them upto Sth Semesterf ll year of their UG degree course of study. For other courses direct admissions
are planned.
PROCEDURE FOR SECURING ADMISSION

The weightage will be as follows:
!. Entrance Test 60 marks
!!. UG Course of study (upto v Sem. f ll year) +0 marks
100 marks
The total marks scored upto Sth semester of study (if it is semester pattern) or upto ll year of study (if it is annual
pattern) in the UG degree course in all subjects other than i) part l f ll Languages and ii) subjects like General
Knowledge, NSS, irrespective of the candidate appearing for April 2013 examinations or already qualified for the
award of degree, shall be reduced to +0 marks. lf a candidate has failed in some subjects upto v semesterf ! year as
the case may be, as on date of application, the marks secured in all subjects (passed and failed) shall be taken to
arrive at the total marks scored.
The question paper for the entrance test shall consist of 60 Objective type questions giving + choices to choose
among, carrying 1 (one) mark each and the duration of the test will be 90 minutes.
Hall- tickets containing the date, time and venue of the entrance test will be sent to the candidates by the respective
HODs by certificate of postings so as to reach the candidates atleast S days before the date of entrance test.
Candidates who do not receive the hall-tickets in time may contact the respective HODs and obtain the same.
Provisional list of selected, wait listed candidates will be put up in the notice boards of the respective departments
within fifteen days after the date of entrance test.
The selected candidates shall be required to surrender their original Transfer Certificate, Conduct Certificate
Community Certificate, Nark sheets, (SSLC, HSC, Degree) Provisional f Degree Certificates and a set attested Xerox
copies of all the certificates and remit the prescribed fee on or before the last date indicated in their admission card.
Free Education Scheme {FES)
Free Education Scheme offered by this University enables Free Education to the poor and meritorious student. !t is
offered to one candidate from each department, admitted into various courses of this University. Parents income
should not exceed Rs. 30,000f- p.a. The selection will be based on the family income and academic performance.
Such students are eligible to apply for free education.
All the fee, boarding and lodging are borne by the University for the students selected under FES.
Applicants not getting admission in one department can transfer their applications to other
departments where seats are available with the permission of the Registrar. However such transferers
will be ranked after original applicants in the selection process.
The last date for receipt of filled in application is 15.05.2014 by 5.00 pm.

Opportunities for Quality
Bharathiar University uses the regulatory framework, which governs the standards of courses and awards. A
system of quality assurance procedures and committees underpins the quality of all our work. We plan a
considerable emphasis on enhancing the quality of teaching and an enriching learning process. The University
has emerged with the "Choice Based Credit System". lt incorporates external examiners' reports, curriculum
review processes into the quality enhancement process. Through our evaluation processes, we aim to promote
a vibrant approach to learning and teaching.
Life at Bharathiar University
The University is located at the foot of the Narudhamalai hills about 12 kms from the Coimbatore city in a
sprawling area of about 1000 acres. The atmosphere is quite serene and ideal for intellectual pursuits. The
campus has a number of beautifully designed buildings which house various teaching and research
departments, Library, Computer centre, administrative offices, hostels, cafeteria, etc.
Student Computing Facilities
The internet centre is equiped with the latest state of the art technology with a 30 Nbps Broad band. lt has high
speed internet server, scanner, web camera, printer cum copier machines and Nultimedia accessibility. Apart
from these facilities, each department has a Broad band !nternet connectivity with LAN facility for the use of
students and faculty members. Further the University is connected with National knowledge Network.
Library and Learning Resources
The Library and Learning Resources service is located in a vast Building and plays a vital role in supporting
learning and teaching. ln an age where the amount of information available is greater and growing more rapidly
than at any time in human history, the ability to locate and make use of information is essential for success as a
student. The Library aims to provide much of the information you will need, and to equip you with the skills to
find and use it. At its core has a collection of over 1,S0,000 items covering all the subjects taught in the
University Schools. The key to the Library's collections and range of services is its catalogue, which can be

searched using terminals in the Library, UGC - !NFONET terminals with !nternet access, the library also gives access
to a wide range of electronic resources.
Borrowing
Nost books can be borrowed for home use, but to ensure the widest possible access to books which are in heaviest
demand, such as those on reading lists, their use is normally confined to the Library. Through the !nter-Library Loan
service, books and other items can often be obtained from other libraries for use by readers. Students of the Schools
of Bharathiar University also have direct access to the Library resources of World Universities. The University Library
functions from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. on all working days and from 10.00 a.m. to +.00 p.m. on weekends and public
holidays.
Departmental Libraries
Each and every department under the Schools have their own collections available for students in their specialized
area of study.
Collections
The library also has world class collections of text books and various publications of government, research
organizations and institutions, RB!, Ninistries of both centre and state chiefly focusing towards the students interest
to acquire wide knowledge.
Periodicals
The Library maintains a Periodicals collection of over 1000 titles. The most recent issues are displayed for easy
browsing and the back issues are stored in hardcopy or CDs. Nany periodicals are now also available in electronic
format, and access to these is available using a password. The Library also provides most of the major English and
Tamil daily newspapers.
Reprographic Services
The University library provides Xerox facility inside the book section for the benefit of users. The Library is fully
computerized. This is one of the few Universities in south !ndia to have facilities like CD RON section, bar-coded
facility and internet services. The library is a member of the UGC - !NFONET - consortium, whereby e-journals of
different faculties can be accessed.
Classroom Resources
The classroom Resources Collection is of special help to students, as it brings together materials for the teaching of
literacy and numeracy as well as a wide range of resources for use on student placement, including an extensive
collection of illustrations, plus CDs, DvDs and videos, together with the appropriate viewing and listening equipment.
Scholarships
A number of scholarships which include the Government of !ndia, Nerit, Backward, Nost Backward Class
Scholarships, Scheduled Caste, and Scheduled Tribe Scholarships are also available to the students admitted to the
PG Degree courses. UGC Sponsored scholarships such as Single Girl Child, Rank holders, Rajiv Gandhi JRF 8 SRF etc.
are also available.

Examinations
The university has introduced Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for all PG degree programmes offered by the
university Departments from the academic year 2001 - 2002. lt permits the candidates to study 30 percent of
the course curriculum content offered by other departments. This scheme also permits the students to move
from one University to another University without difficulties and fall in line with most of the international
Universities.
Amenities
The University has six buses for the convenience of the staff and students. The campus is also connected with
very frequent city buses from the Coimbatore city. The University runs four hostels for boys and three
exclusively for girl students. There are well- equipped Library, Computer Centre, Health Centre and Sports
Stadium. A Post-Office, Bank, Food Court, Travel Desk, Stationery Shop and saloon are functioning in the
University Campus for the benefit of the staff and students. There are three NSS Units functioning in the
University.
Language Lab
University has modern language lab based on the Nultimedia Systems, with the following software. 1. Teacher
console for conducting programme and monitoring students and providing Online help etc. 2. English lab based
on the client server application running in LAN. 3. Career lab for teaching public speaking, facing interview,
group discussion, resume preparation, assertiveness and soft skills.
Academic Calendar
At the beginning of every academic year, students are intimated about the date of commencement of class,
intervening holidays, the last date for the payment of tuition and examination fee, the date of commencement
of examinations and the date of publication of examination results through an academic calendar.
Newsletter
Bharathiar University brings out a newsletter called "Bharathiar University Newsletter". The News Letter
publishes new developments and various curricular and co-curricular activities of the University.
Manavar Malar
The University publishes a student magazine called "Nanavar Nalar" to encourage and bring out the talents of
students in Arts, Photography, Narration etc.,

Games and Sports
The department of Physical Education Coordinates the games and sports activities of the affiliated colleges and
provides opportunities for the students to demonstrate their competence in inter-collegiate sports meets. The
department is also responsible for selection of the University teams to participate in the All !ndia !nter-
University Tournaments, University Games and Sports Neets. Our University has facilities for games like
volleyball, Football, Hockey, Cricket and other field events with a six lane +00 metre track.

INDOOR STADIUM
Extension Activities
With the spirit that the fruits of knowledge should reach the community at large, the University extends its
community service activities through the National Service Scheme (NSS). The NSS extends its community and
social service activities through 130 NSS units functioning in the University campus and affiliated colleges.
Nearly 1+,200 student volunteers are actively involved in social upliftment programmes. Under the agis of NSS a
Red Ribbon Club (RRC) is functioning, which creates an awareness about the A!DS and ways of preventing it.
Support Services Fitness Centre
The University Fitness Centre is functioning in the basement of the School of Distance Education Building. This
facility is open to all the staff and students. Separate sections are available for men and women. Well qualified
physical fitness instructors are available in the centre. The centre focuses its attention on maintaining and
developing physical fitness, weight reduction and body building.
Health Centre
The University Health Centre caters to the medical needs of the students and employees of the University. !t
functions daily on all working days with well experienced Doctors and Technicians.
Bharathiar Counseling Centre
The centre offers counseling services to the University students for enhancing their educational, vocational and
Personality capabilities. !t also helps students to plan their career and enrich mental health.
Hostels
Separate hostel facilities are available for women, PG students with single and twin bed rooms, solar heater,
common mess with !ndian Food, Recreation rooms, Phone facility (STD f !SO). Students who are desirous to
join the hostel shall contact the respective Warden immediately after admission.
Hostel accommodation will be subject to the availability of rooms. Otherwise students have to
make their own arrangements for accommodation.
