ABSTRACT
Meeting to discuss the politics, ecological, social implications of hand-washing clothes in the world How it is possible to re-think the technological and sociological ways we wash clothes around the world, in accordance with economical, cultural and environemental aspects ? Is it possible to create new modes, new technologies, new ways to liberate people in this task, in a consciousness of sustainable developpement and respect of the natural and human environment ? Is it possible to bring solutions in some isolated and poor communities for people using soap and washing by hand cloths in rivers and water sources? How to make people thing about the water resources and the importance to take care of this vital element?

What is

OSWASH

It is a washing machines open source project to research about the ways we wash clothes around the world and to build prototypes and solutions under anti-copyright licence

martes 11 de marzo de 14

Context of the OSWASH project ?

- Most people on the world washes clothes by hand.

martes 11 de marzo de 14

- Water sources, rivers, lakes are the most common enviroments where washing by hand happens.

martes 11 de marzo de 14

- It's a huge amount of time for kids and women, the most involved. Men as well are affected.

martes 11 de marzo de 14

- Access to water is difficult. It should be filtered and re-used

martes 11 de marzo de 14

- Chemicals are used, toxic for the hands, the body and the water springs

martes 11 de marzo de 14

-There is not an action taken in general for the gray water production and how it pollute rivers.

martes 11 de marzo de 14

- Carring heavy wet clothes home

martes 11 de marzo de 14

- In most of the places there is no need of great technologies...

... but where art and crafts still alive, there is a posibility to find out different systems to make a change for this situation.

martes 11 de marzo de 14

martes 11 de marzo de 14

- It also can be thinking to work collectivilly to avoid pollution in rivers. But what people will do if a machine replace their work?

martes 11 de marzo de 14

- Can it be that the solution is to believe that each family in the world should acquire an industrial western style washing machine ?

martes 11 de marzo de 14

NO WAY! It is a non sense idea!

-Problems of water (in & out) -Problem of electricity -Problem of money

OSWASH

(Open Source Washing Machines)

This project aims to re-think the technological, sociological and ecological aspects related to how to wash clothes all around the world. Being aware of the different cases for each context. Taking in account the economical, cultural and environnemental situations. Is it possible to re-think the technics facing each situation? Is it possible to propose new and creative ways of washing clothes no matter how weird it looks at the begining? Is it possible to make use of new technologies in certain cases, where open source hardwares and softwares apply?
martes 11 de marzo de 14

YES, well, we think it is possible!

martes 11 de marzo de 14

OSWASH aim to define :

-a panel of technologies -a panel of materials for the different technologies -a panel of DIY and ecological detergents -a panel of people/knowledge to build prototypes (everywhere) and test them into the adapted contexts -a panel of methods for DIY /dissemination workshops -a panel of people to give the first dissemination workshops

WASHING = agitating water + detergents + clothes...

-rotating systems ? -vibrating systems -ultrasonic systems ? -shocking systems ? -brushing systems ? -bubbling systems ? Other ideas -uv light systems ? -bacterial systems ? ... ? How to motivate ingeneering/design/biology schools to work on some new concepts ?
martes 11 de marzo de 14

MATERIALS.. ...DIY water friendly Soaps...

- How to build soaps and detergents with natural products, plants and trees ?

-How to grow soap plants and trees ?

martes 11 de marzo de 14

- How to manage, clean and recycle water?

martes 11 de marzo de 14

Goals to do in this research and practical process : -global inventory of soap plants -bibliography on the subject
martes 11 de marzo de 14

3 prototypes were built in Feb 2009: -two for fun: * sound machine *dancing floor machine - one possible for the project: *cycle bamboo solar machine

In February 2014, we have organized a residency at Orleans, France. Before the Symposium.

What was the residence about?

Three people exchanged their perspectives from three different projects engaged with water, ecologie, design, technologie and arts. A two weeks Workshop was organized to support the research and prototype developpement for 'open source washing machines'. http://oswash.org http://ark0.tumblr.com

How to implicate people from developped and non developped countries ? How to create bonds between people without following some of usual bad ONG practices?
martes 11 de marzo de 14

How self-organization model and technological selfsufficiency will be crucial in the coming years, when the effects of the energy crisis/climate profoundly affect civilization?

martes 11 de marzo de 14

Waste, soaps, chimicals are permanetely throwned to the ground. The soil can not filter all the toxics, it gets into the deep waters, then the rivers and the ocean.

martes 11 de marzo de 14

Main ideas and goals for the workshop:

1.

Documentation and research on water and washing machines: a. Starting the botanical-chemical inventory (wikipediastyle, or directly into wikipedia, better) of plants with saponins and other mixes for washing-filtrering water. b. Documentation for future publishing, fundings, exhibition ( posters, flyers, cartels, press release) c. Educative workshop with young scholars or students with local children in Orlans. Such as: How to make soap with recycled edible vegetal oil and ashes.

martes 11 de marzo de 14

2. Hands on the open source washing machine:

a. Building model machines with recycled elements (washing machines technologies: bubbles, brushes, solar, ultrasound, etc) ready to be exhibited in any "oswash exhibition", and solid for transportation reasons (sent by post).! b. Building 2 prototypes in real size or bigger scale than the models: one for individual washing machine (5 kg clothes), one for collective machine ( 10 to 16 kg clothes). (in this case we will need different tools and heavyest materials, it will depend on the budget we found in some way, even if materials will be recycled parts of cars)!

martes 11 de marzo de 14

3. Two or three day's Seminar on open products in the

context of Internet of Things:! ! The audience will be invited to brainstorming and have as outcome some kind of text manifesto or collaborative poem.!
