Appendix BBiodiesel Standards

This section contains the specications of the following biodiesel standards: ASTM D6751 (United States), entitled Standard Specication for Biodiesel (B100) Blend Stock for Distillate Fuels, see Table B-1; ASTM D7467 (United States), entitled Standard Specication for Diesel Fuel Oil, Biodiesel Blend (B6 to B20), see Table B-2; EN 14213 (Europe), entitled Heating fuels - Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) Requirements and test methods, see Table B-3; EN 14214 (Europe), entitled Automotive fuels - Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) for diesel engines - Requirements and test methods, see Table B-4; Provisional Australian biodiesel standard, see Table B-5. Brazilian biodiesel standard NBR 15512, see Table B-6. South African biodiesel standard SANS 1935, see Table B-7. Analytical standards developed usually for the sake of inclusion in full biodiesel standards, see Table B-8. The specications in these standards may change with time. As it is not possible to reprint this book every time a change occurs, the user is encouraged to check the websites of the corresponding standards organizations for any newer versions of these standards. While there is a separate standard in the United States concerned with B6 to B20 blends, blends of up to 5% biodiesel in petrodiesel (B5) are covered by the petrodiesel standard ASTM D975. The European standard EN 14214, which went into eect in 2003, supersedes the biodiesel standards in the European countries which are members of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Therefore, no standards from individual European countries are given. CEN standards apply in the following member countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Besides the biodiesel standards, analytical standards have been developed in the United States and Europe for the purpose of including them as prescribed methods in biodiesel standards. Table B-6 lists such relevant analytical standards. The biodiesel standards can vary by properties, methods and limits. The biodiesel standards given are elaborated upon in the full standards available from the corresponding standardization organizations.

Appendix B

The European standard EN 14214 contains a separate section (not given in the table) for low-temperature properties. National standardizing committees are given the option of selecting between six CFPP (cold-lter plugging point; method EN 116) classes for moderate climates and ve for arctic climates. The total temperature range for these CFPP classes is from +5C to 44C. Relatedly, as the requirements regarding low-temperature properties vary, the standard ASTM D6751 has a report requirement for its cloud point parameter. A signicant number of specications in the standards deal with completion of the transesterication reaction. These are the specications related to free and total glycerol or content of mono- di- and triglycerides. Analytical standards based on gas chromatography are utilized in the standards for these specications (see also Chapter 5). Standards related to these analyses have been developed and are included in Table B-8.
