& 478 Piston Actuators Instruction Manual, Form 1864, August 1998

WARNING
To avoid loss of control of process fluid and subsequent personal injury or property damage caused by bursting of pressure-retaining parts, be sure the cylinder pressure does not exceed 80 psig in high cycle-rate, fast stroking speed three-way valve applications.

In three-way valve applications where the actuator fully strokes at a frequency of once per minute or faster, and the stroking speed is rapid (less than 0.5 seconds per stroke), there is a possibility that the stem can fracture at the plug if the actuator cylinder pressure is greater than 80 psig. This can cause loss of control of process fluid. Consideration should be given to the use of high-strength, fatigue-resistant stem materials in these applications. This problem appears to be application sensitive, in particular, water quench applications in steel mills where stroking speed and cylinder pressure were high. There have been no reported occurrences of this type of failure in other applications.

Type 470, 471, 475, and 478 piston actuators are included in this instruction manual. Type 472, 473, and 474 piston actuators are covered in separate instruction manuals. Options are indicated by a suffix to the type number: -5 for manual handwheel, -7 for 4-1/8 inch (105 mm) maximum travel, -8 for clevis stem connector, and -16 for 8-1/8 inch (206 mm) maximum travel.

Installation
When an actuator and valve are shipped together as a control valve assembly, the actuator is normally mounted on the valve. Follow the valve instructions when installing the control valve in the pipeline. If the actuator is shipped separately or if it is necessary to mount the actuator on the valve, perform the Actuator Mounting procedures in this instruction manual. For information on mounting valve positioners, refer to the appropriate valve positioner instruction manual. If a Type 471 actuator is being installed, the cylinder loading pressures should be supplied through a 4-way solenoid valve or a switching valve. The bottom side of the piston is pressured through the connection at the lower side of the cylinder (key 2, figures 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7). The top side of the piston is pressured through the connection in the cylinder cover (key 31, figures 6 and 7).

Specifications
Refer to tables 1 and 2 for specifications of the Type 470, 471, 475, and 478 piston actuators. See the actuator nameplate for information about a specific actuator.

CAUTION
To avoid damage to actuator parts and difficult operation of actuator handwheels, open the bypass valve before using a handwheel. If repeated or daily manual operation is expected, the actuator should be equipped with a manual handwheel. To manually move the piston rod with the handwheel, first open the bypass needle valve (key 185, figure 8), and place the handwheel pointer in the neutral position and insert the locking pin in the sleeve assembly. Then turn the handwheel in the selected direction as indicated on the wheel.

Stem Connector Assembly CAUTION

D To avoid damaging the seating surfaces, do not rotate the valve plug while it is seated. Also avoid damage to the valve plug stem by careful use of tools during travel adjustment. D Incomplete engagement of valve stem and/or actuator stem in the stem connector can result in stripped threads or improper operation. Be sure that the length of each stem clamped in the stem connector is equal to or greater than the diameter of that stem. Do not loosen the cap screws when the stem connector has spring or loading pressure force applied to it.

Actuator Mounting
If an actuator is purchased separately for field installation on a control valve, mount it on the valve and secure it in place with the yoke locknut. Actuators with a 5-inch (127 mm) yoke boss are secured to the valve bonnet with eight bolts rather than a yoke locknut. The stem connector should then be made up to clamp the actuator stem and valve plug stem together to provide the proper valve travel. This procedure is outlined in the Stem Connector Assembly procedures of this instruction manual. The control valve should be located where it will be accessible for servicing. Room should be left above and below the control valve to permit removal of the actuator and valve plug. Key numbers indicated refer to figure 3 for Type 470, figure, figures 4 and 5 for Type 475, figure 6 for Type 478, and figure 7 for -16 (8-1/8 inch or 206 mm maximum travel) constructions.

Direct-Acting (Push-Down-to-Close) Valves

1. With the valve assembled and the actuator mounted, make sure the valve plug is in the closed position, and the actuator is at the top of its stroke. Then screw the two stem locknuts all the way onto the stem thread and place the travel indicator disk (if any) on the stem locknuts. 2. Keeping your hands away from any moving parts, pressure the actuator until the piston rod moves down from the top of its stroke the specified valve travel. 3. Attach the stem connector, clamping the piston rod to the valve stem. With the stem locknuts, raise the travel indicator disk to the stem connector. 4. Cycle the actuator to check availability of desired total travel and that the valve plug seats before the

Type 470, 471, 475, & 478

actuator contacts the lower travel stop. Minor travel adjustments can be made by loosening the stem connector slightly, tightening the locknuts together, and screwing the stem either into or out of the stem connector with a wrench on the locknuts. If the valve stem cannot be turned, as with a bellows seal bonnet, remake the stem connection to achieve the desired travel. 5. Once the total travel is adequate, tighten the stem connector securely, lock the stem locknuts against the connector, and adjust the indicator scale on the yoke to show correct valve plug position. 6. Provide a gauge to measure the pressure to the actuator. Make a final adjustment of the actuator or its positioner to set the starting point of valve travel and to obtain full travel for the given instrument range.

Reverse-Acting (Push-Down-to-Open) Valves

1. Keeping your hands away from moving parts, pressure the actuator to move the piston rod to the extreme upward position then reverse loading pressure to lower the piston rod approximately 1/8 inch (3 mm). 2. Pull the valve stem up to seat the valve plug. 3. With the two cap screws, attach the stem connector to the piston rod and valve stem making sure the stem connector fully engages the piston rod threads. 4. If there is a travel indicator disk, raise it to the stem connector and tighten in position with the stem locknuts. The indicator disk or pointer should show the valve to be open with the piston at the bottom of its stroke. If it does not, loosen two screws (key 19) and shift the travel indicator scale (key 20) to indicate OPEN. 5. Cycle the actuator to check availability of desired total travel and that the valve plug seats before the actuator contacts the lower travel stop. 6. Once the total travel is adequate, tighten the stem connector securely, lock the stem locknuts against the connector, and adjust the indicator scale on the yoke to show correct valve plug position. Provide a gauge to measure the pressure to the actuator. Make a final adjustment of the actuator or its positioner to set the starting point of valve travel and to obtain full travel for the given instrument range.

Figure 2. Schematic Illustration of a 470 Series Actuator

Bypass Assembly
The bypass is furnished as shown in figure 9 only when a handwheel actuator is specified. The bypass allows the pressure to equalize on either side of the piston, so that the manual actuator can be used to position the valve. Flow through the bypass tubing is controlled by an angle needle valve (key 185), which is operated manually. This valve should be closed when the actuator is being used to operate the valve.

Principle of Operation
With Positioner (Types 470, 475, and 478)
Refer to figure 2. The pneumatic output signal from a controller or instrument is piped to the bellows of the Type 3570 positioner. An increasing input signal to the Type 3570 results in unbalanced pressures acting on the actuator piston, forcing it to move down. A decreasing input signal to the Type 3570 causes reverse action to take place, resulting in unbalanced pressures forcing the actuator piston to move upward. A feedback arrangement prevents over-correction and ensures a definite position of the piston for a specific

Type 470, 471, 475, & 478

input signal, thus giving stable and accurate response to changing conditions. For more detailed information on the Type 3570 Positioner, refer to the Principle of Operation section in the Type 3570 Instruction Manual. lines to the positioner then remove all tubing lines (cylinder, instrument and supply) from the positioner. 2. Loosen the four cover screws on the underside of the positioner and remove the positioner cover. 3. Disengage the range spring by unscrewing the spring retainer from the piston rod extension. 4. Loosen the two caps screws that hold the positioner to the cylinder. When removing the positioner, do not lose the small O-ring that is used in the air passage from the positioner to the top of the cylinder.

Without Positioner (Type 471)

The piston moves as air pressure is loaded on one side of the piston, and unloading on the other side. Because no positioner is furnished, a loading device, such as a 4-way switching valve, must be installed. A loading device is not furnished with the actuator.

CAUTION
Do not use wrenches or other tools directly on the valve stem. Damage to the stem surface could result in subsequent damage to the valve packing. 5. Remove the stem connector (key 6) and the piston rod boot (key 24) used to protect the lower end of the piston rod. 6. Remove the socket head cap screws that hold the cylinder (key 2) to the yoke (key 1). 7. Insert a screwdriver in the two slots on the lower edge of the cylinder casting and pry the cylinder loose from the yoke. Remove the cylinder, being careful not to mar the cylinder wall. 8. The piston (key 3) and piston rod (key 4) will come out with the cylinder. The piston can then be removed by forcing it out the open end of the cylinder. 9. Unscrew the upper and lower seal bushings (keys 7 and 8), one in the upper end of the cylinder and the other screwed into the upper end of the yoke. 10. With the unit disassembled, inspect all parts for excessive wear and defects. Replace all worn O-rings. Lubricate (key 238 or equivalent) as indicated on the assembly drawings. Apply sealant (key 239 or equivalent) as indicated on the assembly drawings. When reassembling the actuator after the piston rod extension (key 5) has been removed from the piston rod (key 4), clean the threads of the piston rod extension thoroughly and apply Loctite 242 or equivalent thread sealant to the threads. Tighten the piston rod extension securely to a torque of 150 lbfSft (203 NSm). This torque is approximately equal to the torque that would be developed by placing a force of 150 pounds on the end of a one-foot wrench, 75 pounds on the end of a two-foot wrench, etc. 11. To inspect the clevis stem connector assembly in the Type 478 or -8 assemblies, remove the clevis boot (key 190, figure 6) which covers this assembly. The clevis stem connector assembly can be disassembled by removing the E-ring (key 189, figure 6) and pulling clevis pin (key 188, figure 6).

Maintenance
Actuator parts are subject to normal wear and must be inspected and replaced when necessary. The frequency of inspection and replacement depends on the severity of service conditions. Because of the care Fisher Controls takes in meeting all manufacturing requirements (such as heat treating and dimensional tolerances), use only replacement parts manufactured or furnished by Fisher Controls.

WARNING
Avoid personal injury from sudden release of process pressure or uncontrolled process fluid. Before starting disassembly: D Disconnect any operating lines providing air pressure to the actuator. Be sure the actuator cannot suddenly open or close the valve. D Use bypass valves or completely shut off the process to isolate the valve from process pressure. Relieve process pressure on both sides of the valve. Drain the process media from both sides of the valve. D Vent the power actuator loading pressure. D Use lock-out procedures to be sure that the above measures stay in effect while you work on the equipment. Key numbers indicated refer to figure 3 for Type 470, figure, figures 4 and 5 for Type 475, figure 6 for Type 478, and figure 7 for -16 constructions. 1. Bypass the control valve. If positioner is not used, go to step 5. If positioner is used, shut off all pressure

Type 470, 471, 475, & 478

Handwheel Maintenance
Refer to figure 5 for size 60 and figure 6 for size 80-100. The handwheel gears should be lubricated periodically. A grease fitting (key 68, not shown) is provided on the larger sizes. On the smaller sizes, remove the handwheel (key 63) and the bevel pinion (key 58) and pack the gear case with grease. Loosen the set screw (key 67) before attempting to remove the pinion and extension. If it is necessary to change the valve plug action from push-down-to-close to push-down-to-open or vice versa, change the handwheel arrangement so that the arrow indicates the correct rotation required to open the valve. Remove the handwheel, invert and replace it. On size 60 (figure 4) , remove and replace the spring-loaded ball assembly (key 70) in the opposite side. On sizes 80 and 100 (figure 5), remove the handwheel assembly and install in the opposite end of the gear case by unscrewing the back and front worm retainers (keys 61 and 62, not shown) and turn the handwheel to disengage the bevel pinion (key 58). 12. To remove the actuator stem (key 215, not shown), loosen the stem connection (key 6) and pull the actuator stem out the top of the sleeve assembly (key 156). 13. Remove the sleeve by screwing it out of the sleeve assembly (key 156). 14. Unscrew the upper seal bushing (key 7) and lower seal bushing (key 8, not shown) to inspect the O-rings (keys 9, 10, 11, and 12). To disassemble Type 475 and -5 piston actuators sizes 80-130 for maintenance, perform the following procedures (figure 6): 1. Be sure that all pressure is out of the cylinder and valve body. 2. Remove all tubing lines to the positioner. 3. Loosen the four screws on the underside of the positioner base, and remove the positioner cover. 4. Disengage the range spring by unscrewing the spring retainer from the piston rod extension (key 5). 5. Remove the two cap screws holding the positioner to the cylinder (key 2). 6. Remove the cap screws (key 13) on the underside of the cylinder flange (key 157) and remove the cylinder (key 2). 7. Remove the piston rod extension (key 5) and the piston nut (key 30, not shown), then use a mallet to remove the piston (key 3) from the piston rod (key 4, not shown). 8. Remove the cap screws (key 37) and cylinder adaptor (key 38). 9. Remove the cap screws (key 53) and remove the spacer (key 143), being careful not to lose the key (key 50). 10. Remove the locking pin (key 182), disconnect the stem connector (key 6) and pull out the piston rod (key 4). 11. Remove the pointer (key 153) and turn the sleeve out of the sleeve assembly (key 156). 12. Remove the cap screws (key 53) holding the gear case (key 54) to the yoke (key 1). 13. Lift the gear case (key 54) to expose the handwheel assembly.

Disassembly
To disassemble Type 475 and -5 piston actuators size 60 for maintenance, perform the following procedures (figure 4): 1. 7. Unscrew the piston rod extension (key 5) and use a mallet to tap the piston (key 3) off the piston rod (key 4, not shown). 8. Remove the handwheel extension (key 197) by loosening the set screw (key 67) and unscrewing the extension. 9. Remove the cap screws (not shown) holding the cylinder flange (key 157) to the yoke (key 1). 10. Lift the cylinder flange (key 157) off the yoke (key 1). 11.
