& 478 Piston Actuators Instruction Manual, Form 1864, August 1998
WARNING
To avoid loss of control of process fluid and subsequent personal injury or property damage caused by bursting of pressure-retaining parts, be sure the cylinder pressure does not exceed 80 psig in high cycle-rate, fast stroking speed three-way valve applications.
In three-way valve applications where the actuator fully strokes at a frequency of once per minute or faster, and the stroking speed is rapid (less than 0.5 seconds per stroke), there is a possibility that the stem can fracture at the plug if the actuator cylinder pressure is greater than 80 psig. This can cause loss of control of process fluid. Consideration should be given to the use of high-strength, fatigue-resistant stem materials in these applications. This problem appears to be application sensitive, in particular, water quench applications in steel mills where stroking speed and cylinder pressure were high. There have been no reported occurrences of this type of failure in other applications.

Figure 1. Type 470 Actuator with Type 3570 Positioner and Design ES Valve
Introduction
Scope of Manual
This instruction manual presents principle of operation, installation, maintenance, and parts list for the Type 470 (figure 1), 471, 475, and 478 piston actuators. Refer to separate instruction manuals for information on the 3570 Series pneumatic valve positioners and on other equipment and accessories used with these actuators. Only personnel qualified through training or experience should install, operate, and maintain a Type 470, 471,
475, or 478 piston actuator. If you have any questions about these instructions, contact your Fisher Controls sales office or sales representative before proceeding.
Description
The 470 Series piston actuators are available in many configurations: with (Type 470) or without (Type 471) positioner, with fail-up (Type 472) or fail-down (Type 473) spring return, with hydraulic snubber (Type 474), with integral handjack (Type 475), or with clevis stem connected for rotary valve installation (Type 478).
D100289X012
Type 470, 471, 475, and 478 piston actuators are included in this instruction manual. Type 472, 473, and 474 piston actuators are covered in separate instruction manuals. Options are indicated by a suffix to the type number: -5 for manual handwheel, -7 for 4-1/8 inch (105 mm) maximum travel, -8 for clevis stem connector, and -16 for 8-1/8 inch (206 mm) maximum travel.
Installation
When an actuator and valve are shipped together as a control valve assembly, the actuator is normally mounted on the valve. Follow the valve instructions when installing the control valve in the pipeline. If the actuator is shipped separately or if it is necessary to mount the actuator on the valve, perform the Actuator Mounting procedures in this instruction manual. For information on mounting valve positioners, refer to the appropriate valve positioner instruction manual. If a Type 471 actuator is being installed, the cylinder loading pressures should be supplied through a 4-way solenoid valve or a switching valve. The bottom side of the piston is pressured through the connection at the lower side of the cylinder (key 2, figures 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7). The top side of the piston is pressured through the connection in the cylinder cover (key 31, figures 6 and 7).
Specifications
Refer to tables 1 and 2 for specifications of the Type 470, 471, 475, and 478 piston actuators. See the actuator nameplate for information about a specific actuator.

CAUTION
To avoid damage to actuator parts and difficult operation of actuator handwheels, open the bypass valve before using a handwheel. If repeated or daily manual operation is expected, the actuator should be equipped with a manual handwheel. To manually move the piston rod with the handwheel, first open the bypass needle valve (key 185, figure 8), and place the handwheel pointer in the neutral position and insert the locking pin in the sleeve assembly. Then turn the handwheel in the selected direction as indicated on the wheel.
Actuator Mounting
If an actuator is purchased separately for field installation on a control valve, mount it on the valve and secure it in place with the yoke locknut. Actuators with a 5-inch (127 mm) yoke boss are secured to the valve bonnet with eight bolts rather than a yoke locknut. The stem connector should then be made up to clamp the actuator stem and valve plug stem together to provide the proper valve travel. This procedure is outlined in the Stem Connector Assembly procedures of this instruction manual. The control valve should be located where it will be accessible for servicing. Room should be left above and below the control valve to permit removal of the actuator and valve plug. Key numbers indicated refer to figure 3 for Type 470, figure, figures 4 and 5 for Type 475, figure 6 for Type 478, and figure 7 for -16 (8-1/8 inch or 206 mm maximum travel) constructions.

Bypass Assembly
The bypass is furnished as shown in figure 9 only when a handwheel actuator is specified. The bypass allows the pressure to equalize on either side of the piston, so that the manual actuator can be used to position the valve. Flow through the bypass tubing is controlled by an angle needle valve (key 185), which is operated manually. This valve should be closed when the actuator is being used to operate the valve.
Principle of Operation
With Positioner (Types 470, 475, and 478)
Refer to figure 2. The pneumatic output signal from a controller or instrument is piped to the bellows of the Type 3570 positioner. An increasing input signal to the Type 3570 results in unbalanced pressures acting on the actuator piston, forcing it to move down. A decreasing input signal to the Type 3570 causes reverse action to take place, resulting in unbalanced pressures forcing the actuator piston to move upward. A feedback arrangement prevents over-correction and ensures a definite position of the piston for a specific
CAUTION
Do not use wrenches or other tools directly on the valve stem. Damage to the stem surface could result in subsequent damage to the valve packing. 5. Remove the stem connector (key 6) and the piston rod boot (key 24) used to protect the lower end of the piston rod. 6. Remove the socket head cap screws that hold the cylinder (key 2) to the yoke (key 1). 7. Insert a screwdriver in the two slots on the lower edge of the cylinder casting and pry the cylinder loose from the yoke. Remove the cylinder, being careful not to mar the cylinder wall. 8. The piston (key 3) and piston rod (key 4) will come out with the cylinder. The piston can then be removed by forcing it out the open end of the cylinder. 9. Unscrew the upper and lower seal bushings (keys 7 and 8), one in the upper end of the cylinder and the other screwed into the upper end of the yoke. 10. With the unit disassembled, inspect all parts for excessive wear and defects. Replace all worn O-rings. Lubricate (key 238 or equivalent) as indicated on the assembly drawings. Apply sealant (key 239 or equivalent) as indicated on the assembly drawings. When reassembling the actuator after the piston rod extension (key 5) has been removed from the piston rod (key 4), clean the threads of the piston rod extension thoroughly and apply Loctite 242 or equivalent thread sealant to the threads. Tighten the piston rod extension securely to a torque of 150 lbfSft (203 NSm). This torque is approximately equal to the torque that would be developed by placing a force of 150 pounds on the end of a one-foot wrench, 75 pounds on the end of a two-foot wrench, etc. 11. To inspect the clevis stem connector assembly in the Type 478 or -8 assemblies, remove the clevis boot (key 190, figure 6) which covers this assembly. The clevis stem connector assembly can be disassembled by removing the E-ring (key 189, figure 6) and pulling clevis pin (key 188, figure 6).
Maintenance
Actuator parts are subject to normal wear and must be inspected and replaced when necessary. The frequency of inspection and replacement depends on the severity of service conditions. Because of the care Fisher Controls takes in meeting all manufacturing requirements (such as heat treating and dimensional tolerances), use only replacement parts manufactured or furnished by Fisher Controls.
WARNING
Avoid personal injury from sudden release of process pressure or uncontrolled process fluid. Before starting disassembly: D Disconnect any operating lines providing air pressure to the actuator. Be sure the actuator cannot suddenly open or close the valve. D Use bypass valves or completely shut off the process to isolate the valve from process pressure. Relieve process pressure on both sides of the valve. Drain the process media from both sides of the valve. D Vent the power actuator loading pressure. D Use lock-out procedures to be sure that the above measures stay in effect while you work on the equipment. Key numbers indicated refer to figure 3 for Type 470, figure, figures 4 and 5 for Type 475, figure 6 for Type 478, and figure 7 for -16 constructions. 1. Bypass the control valve. If positioner is not used, go to step 5. If positioner is used, shut off all pressure
Disassembly
To disassemble Type 475 and -5 piston actuators size 60 for maintenance, perform the following procedures (figure 4): 1. Be sure that all pressure is out of the cylinder and valve body. 2. Remove all tubing lines to the positioner. 3. Loosen the four screws on the underside of the positioner base, and remove the positioner cover. 4. Disengage the range spring by unscrewing the spring retainer from the piston rod extension (key 5). 5. Remove the two cap screws holding the positioner to the cylinder (key 2). 6. Remove the cap screws (key 13) on the underside of the cylinder flange (key 157) and remove the cylinder (key 2). 7. Unscrew the piston rod extension (key 5) and use a mallet to tap the piston (key 3) off the piston rod (key 4, not shown). 8. Remove the handwheel extension (key 197) by loosening the set screw (key 67) and unscrewing the extension. 9. Remove the cap screws (not shown) holding the cylinder flange (key 157) to the yoke (key 1). 10. Lift the cylinder flange (key 157) off the yoke (key 1). 11. Inspect the handwheel gears and bearings as needed.
Reassembly
When reassembling any size Type 475 piston actuator, adjust the set screw (key 51) to eliminate play in gear bearings. When properly set, lock with key 200. When reassembling the actuator after the piston rod extension (key 5) has been removed from the piston rod (key 4), clean the threads of the piston rod extension thoroughly and apply Loctite 242 or equivalent
