Two Doctors Sterilization Experiments

To come up with an effective means of sterilizing millions of people with a minimum of time and effort, doctors at Auschwitz, Ravensbruck, and elsewhere conducted experiments on both men and women. They radiated the genitals of young men, then castrated them to study the resulting changes in their testes. A woman had caustic substances forced into her cervix or uterus, which caused horrible pain, bleeding, and bursting spasms in the stomach. The thousands who were sterilized suffered untold mental and physical anguish. Professor r. !arl !lauberg !arl !lauberg experimented with sterilization in the camp. Part of "lock #o. $% in the &ain !amp was put at his disposal. 'everal hundred (ewish women from various countries lived in two large rooms on the second floor of the building. !lauberg developed a method of non)surgical mass sterilization that consisted of introducing into the female reproductive organs a specially prepared chemical irritant that produced sever inflammation. *ithin several weeks, the fallopian tubes grew shut and were blocked. !lauberg+s experiments killed some of his sub, ects, and others were put to death so that autopsies could be performed. -n (une $./0, !lauberg wrote to 1immler2 3The non-surgical method of sterilizing women that I have invented is now almost perfected . . . As for the questions that you have directed to me, sir, I can today answer them in the way that I had anticipated: if the research that I am carrying out continues to yield the sort of results that it has produced so far (and there is no reason to suppose that this shall not e the case!, then I shall e a le to report in the foreseea le future that one e"perienced physician, with an appropriately equipped office and the aid of ten au"iliary personnel, will e a le to carry out in the course of a single day the sterilization of hundreds, or even #,$$$ women.3 r. 1orst 'chumann 4ike !lauberg, 1orst 'chumann was searching for a convenient means of mass sterilization that would enable the Third Reich to carry out the biological destruction of con5uered nations by 3scientific methods3))through depriving people of their reproductive capacity. 36)ray sterilization3 e5uipment was set up for 'chumann in one of the barracks at "irkenau. 7very so often, several dozen (ewish men and women prisoners were brought in. The sterilization experiments consisted of exposing the women+s ovaries and the men+s testes to 6)rays. 'chumann applied various intensities at various intervals in his search for the optimal dose of radiation. The exposure to radiation produced severe burns on the belly, groin, and buttocks areas of the sub, ects, and festering sores that were resistant to healing. &any sub, ects died from complications. The results of the 6)ray sterilization experiments were unsatisfactory. -n an article that he sent to 1immler in April $.//, titled 3The 7ffect of 6)Ray Radiation on the human Reproductive 8lands,3 'chumann expressed a preference for surgical castration, as being 5uicker and more certain.
