How to check Netapp controller hardware after a Panic

Issue: Your Netapp Controller has panicked and rebooted, causing a fail over in a fault tolerant clustered pair. You would like to check the Netapp controllers hardware status before you perform a giveback to make sure the controller can see all disks, and everything is online. Solution: 1) Connect to the failed controllers RLM connection and do the following. a. These steps can be done without affecting the other node of the cluster. b. Login as naroot i. Type: system console ii. Press Ctrl-C iii. Type y when prompted

iv. The system will now halt and reboot. v. When the LOADER-A> prompt appear type the following boot_ontap

vi. When the Press Ctrl-C for Boot Menu appears press Ctrl-C vii. If done correctly you should see the following followed by the boot menu as shown here.

viii. Select the Maintenance mode boot option 1. Type 5 and press enter Warning: Never select option 4, you will loose all data on your disks/storage array. ix. While maintenance mode boots you will see the following, which lists the commands available to run.

x. After that you will see a warning message followed by the Continue to boot? question.

1. Press y an then enter to continue a. Repeat several times if needed. xi. After a short wait and some miscellaneous messages you should see the maintenance mode prompt *> 1. You can now enter any of the supported maintenance mode commands. 2. Enter aggr status to verify all aggregates are online.

3. Enter fcadmin device_map to verify all fiber channel disks are online/shown in the device map without error. 4. Enter sasadmin to verify all sas disks are online/shown in the device map without error. 5. Enter other command as needed. xii. To exit maintenance mode enter halt 1. The system will now reboot

2. xiii. When the LOADER-A> prompt appear type the following

boot_ontap xiv. Wait until you see the following message 1. Waiting for giveback.(Press Ctrl-C to abort wait)

c. Disconnect from the RLM connection 2) If all physical disks are present and your aggregates are online, in general, you can now safely perform a giveback. 3) If you find an issue or suspect an issue with your hardware you should contact Netapp Support.
