Lesson Aims
Main: To practice reading detailed comprehension Secondary: To practice oral fluency in relation to Living in the USA Personal: I rarely taught reading classes before. So, this lesson might be a bit challenging for me. I want to be able to set up the reading activities smoothly.

Aim
To activate Students existing knowledge To encourage students to think about content of the text To develop oral fluency

Procedure
Put students into pairs. Tell them they have to write as many words related to USA as they can on a paper. Get feedback from each pair. Write the words coming out from the students on the board.

To encourage students to predict/ think about content of the text

Fold the worksheet and show the picture of Liberty Statue. Get students to predict what they are going to read about.

Reading for To practice reading for detailed detail comprehension comprehension

Divide the students into three groups. Tell them they will read about 3 people who came to live in the USA from a different country. Each group will read different person Warn them that they will be summarizing their article for their classmates. Get the students check the answer in pair. Rearrange the groups in which there is one person who has read each text. Tell them to summarize what they have read.

Speaking

To practice oral fluency and be able to summarize the article

Get students to compare three people and answer the questions from exercise 5 Warn them not to read the text but listen to each others summaries. Check the answer with the whole class. Get students to work in group of three Have them to ask each other following questions: Why did they come abroad? What do they miss most? What do they like about Singapore? What do they hate about Singapore? Are there any difficulties of living in Singapore? What are they? Ask each pair to report back what their partner answered If I have time, pick up some mistakes made by students and correct them

Follow up

To practice oral fluency and to allow the students to personally to the text
