Universal League Spreadsheet Introduction

Scope The spreadsheet can be used for any standard league involving up to 30 teams. Just type in team names once, add scores as they occur, and the league table is compiled for you. Standard here means an orthodox double round robin competition where each team plays each of its opponents twice at home and away and where league table ranks are assigned according to points won (three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a loss), goal difference, and goals scored. Limitations The spreadsheet will not compile accurate league tables for such competitions as the League of Ireland where Premier League teams play each other three times, and First Division teams meet four times or Euro 2008, or Major League Soccer in the United States where league table ranks are calculated using more complex formulae. Thirty teams in a double round robin will play 870 matches altogether, or 58 games per team. A bigger tournament seems unlikely but if you know of any, let me know.

Enter your league team names in the Teams worksheet. Type scores in the Scores worksheet in Home-Away sequence. Standings will display in the League Table worksheet. Point deductions, if any, may be entered in the Deductions worksheet. Further instructions in the Teams and Scores worksheets.
