Report to accompany the alignment proposal for the work of Construction of high level bridge across Surplus canal

of Wellington Reservoir at Km 3/8 of Thittakudi Sirupakkam road.

Name of work: Construction of high level bridge across Surplus canal of Wellington Reservoir at Km 3/8 of Thittakudi Sirupakkam Road of Cuddalore district. Scheme: This work has been proposed under Chief Minister Announcement No.185. Location of the Proposed Bridge: The proposed bridge site is located across Surplus canal of Wellington Reservoir at Km 3/8 of Thittakudi Sirupakkam Road (MDR) of Cuddalore district. Existing Details: In the proposed location, there is a bed level piped causeway with 15 rows of 900mm dia. pipes as summer vents. The length of bed level causeway is 83m with 7.5m width. Necessity: At present there is a bed level causeway with summer vents. On the upstream side of the proposed bridge site, there is a reservoir (Wellington reservoir) at Keezhaseruvai which is about 700m from the proposed bridge site. The reservoir is maintained by PWD Vellar basin division, Vridhachalam. The main occupation of the villagers being agriculture, agricultural products like paddy and sugarcane have to be brought to Thittakudi, Pennadam and Vridhachalam for marketing. Sugar mills and cement factory are situated in Pennadam and Echankadu respectively. During monsoon season and floods, the water level increases and due to insufficient vent, the causeway is submerged causing traffic interruptions .The school going children and people from neighbouring villages find it difficult to cross the piped bed level causeway. Construction of a high level bridge at this location will benefit the people of Villages like Pulivalam, E.Keeranur, Pillur, Avati, Adhanur and Kudikadu. Hence it is necessary to construct a high level bridge with sufficient vent in lieu of the existing piped bed level causeway. Alignment No. 1 (marked in Red colour) This Alignment starts at Km 3/4 (CH 0) of Thittakudi Sirupakkam road and takes a right hand circular (C1) at Ch 95.730 and ends at Ch 200.800 with deviation angle of 20 and radius of 301 m, from there the alignment is straight and crosses the river at a skew angle of angle of 48326 and it takes a left hand circular cum transition curve (C2) at Ch 385.328 and ends at Ch 513.070 with deviation angle of 35 and radius of 160m. The alignment ends at Ch 554.210

MERITS:

DEMERITS: 1 2 3 Skew angle is more when compared to alignments 4&5. Land acquisition is required. Number of curves is more when compared to alignments 2&3.

Alignment No. 2 (marked in blue colour) This Alignment starts at Km 3/4 (CH 0) of Thittakudi Sirupakkam road and runs straight and crosses the canal at a skew angle of angle of 614733 and ends at Km 4/162 (Ch 700.310) of Thittakudi Siruppakam road. MERITS 1 This alignment runs straight without any curves. Hence it facilitates comfort riding. 2 Skew angle is less when compared to alignment 3.

DEMERITS 1 Diversion road formation is needed in prior to the construction of HLB. 2 This alignment requires land acquisition. 3 Linear waterway of this alignment is more when compared to alignment 1, 4&5.

Alignment No. 3(marked in a Greencolour) This Alignment starts at Km 3/550 (CH 0) of Thittakudi Sirupakkam with a right hand circular cum transition curve (C1) and ends at Ch 98.304 with deviation angle of 2330 and radius of 130 m, from there the alignment is straight and crosses the river at a skew angle of angle of 624811 and runs straight and ends at Km 4/150 (Ch 542.440).

MERITS 1 This alignment requires land acquisition only on approaches which is comparatively less when compared to other alignments. 2 Approach length is very less when compared to other alignments. 3 Alignment length is less when compared to other alignments 1, 2&4. 4 Only one curve is involved, which results in comfort riding. DEMERITS: 1 Linear water way is more when compared to other alignments. 2 Diversion road formation is needed in prior to the construction of HLB. 3 Skew angle is more when compared to other alignments.
