Unit 10 Vocabulary:

Most definitions and example sentences are taken from either the Merrium-Webster Online Learnerss Dictionary or the NorthStar 3 Reading and Writing Book (3rd Edition)

Crime
Noun: an illegal act

Murder
Noun: the crime of killing someone purposefully
Verb: to kill someone in a deliberate way

Murderer
Noun: a person who kills someone

Violent
Adjective: meant to hurt someone by using force
Crimes can be violent. Murder is violent, but fraud is not.

Punishment
Noun: suffering that is a result a crime or bad behavior.

Courtroom Terms (people)

Guilty
Adjective: having a broken a law Guilt=Noun: 1. responsibility for a crime or for doing something bad or wrong 2. a bad feeling caused by knowing or thinking that you have done something bad or wrong

Innocent
Adjective: not having broken a law (not guilty of a crime) Innocence=Noun:
1. the state of being innocent 2. lack of experience with the world and with the bad things that happen in life

Justice
Noun: right and fair treatment

Fair
Adjective: treating people equally (in a way that does not favor some over others)

Prison (or Jail)


Noun: a building where people are kept as punishment for a crime

Life Sentence
Noun: the punishment of being sent to prison for the rest of your life

Capital Punishment
Noun: the punishment of being executed (the death penalty); the government takes the life of someone who has committed a crime

Execution
Noun: the act of killing someone legally

Cruel
Adjective: causing pain of suffering because you want to

Support
Verb: 1. to give help or assistance; to hold up

Oppose
Verb: 1. to disagree with or disapprove of 2. to compete against someone or something

Noun: 1. a group of adversaries or competitors 2. actions or opinions that show you disagree with someone or something

Adjective: having, showing, or expressing strong emotions or beliefs

Verb: to officially end or stop something

Destroy
Verb: to cause something to no longer exist

Revenge
Noun: doing something bad to someone because they did something bad to you

Anger
Noun: a strong feeling of displeasure Verb: to make someone angry

Respect
Verb: to be careful not to do something against someones rights or wishes
Noun: regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others

Forgiveness
Noun: letting go of anger towards someone who hurt you

Right
Noun: something you are allowed to do or have because of law

Society
Noun: all the people who live in the same country and share the same laws and customs

Citizen
Noun: a person who legally belongs to a country (he or she has the rights and protection of that country)

Citizenship
Noun: the legal right to belong to a certain country

Foreigner
Noun: a person who is from a country that is not your own
Foreign = Adjective

Immigrant
Noun: a person who comes to a country to live there permanently

Immigrate
Verb: come to live permanently in a foreign country
Immigration = Noun

Noun: people who you love, usually a member of your family
