ABSTRACT Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, entertainment, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development. Although the term martial art has become heavily associated with the fighting arts of eastern Asia, it was originally used in regard to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. An English fencing manual of 1639 used the term in reference specifically to the "Science and Art" of swordplay. The term is ultimately derived from Latin, and means "arts of Mars," where Mars is the Roman god of war. Some authors, most notably Donn F. Draeger, have argued that fighting arts or fighting systems would be more appropriate on the basis that many martial arts were never martial in the sense of being used or created by professional warriors. The history of control systems dates back to the origins of mankind. However, since the nineteenth century, the modern concept of martial arts arises. The term "martial arts" is derived from the Chinese characters made by w sh and w y. Chinese English Dictionary Chinese-Ingls Diction, Herbert A. Giles, 1882, w y translates as 'military arts'. W sh the term is not used until 1931, in the Chinese-Ingls Dictionary, Mathews. The term also appears in 1920, in the Japanese-Ingls Dictionary of Takenobu, in the translation from Japanese bu-gei or bu-jutsu as 'the art or performance of military affairs'. Other common pronunciations of the pair of characters are mou SEUT in Cantonese and Vietnamese VO-

Thuat. In China during the Republican Period, from 1928 to 1949, the Chinese fighting systems as guoshu or Kuoshu baptized. The origin of the concept of martial arts associated with the emergence of the modern age in the Far East in the 19th century. Here is a story about Brazilian jiu jitsu and how it originated . Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that originated in the battlefields of feudal Japan where the Samurai fought with weapons, but once the weapons were neglected entered the melee, comprising levers to submit projections dislocations , strangle or even kill the opponent. Gasto Gracie was of Scottish descent , was also a diplomat of the Brazilian government and a very influential person in society then. He was a business partner of the American Circus in Belm at the time, hired an expert Mitsuyo Maeda Japanese man for Japanese martial arts exhibitions and businesses in the circus. Children of Gasto Gracie (Carlos and Helio Gracie), saw a

demonstration of Maeda at the Da Paz Theatre and decided to learn Judo, Jiu Jitsu or Kano as he was known. Maeda accepted them as students.

Helio Gracie and Carlos Gracie learned jiu -jitsu from the hands of Japanese sensei Mitsuyo Maeda, a master of Judo Jigoro Kano nearby , the founder of Judo. Carlos and Helio specialized in this system of Jiu- jitsu fight testing him in actual combat, able to overcome in various martial arts tournaments . As said by the master Mitsuyo Maeda: "must take the fight to more favorable terrain for oneself. Seeking to test the effectiveness of Jiu - jitsu, Helio even came to challenge Joe Louis, mythical world champion heavyweight boxing in the 40s, but the former champion did not accept the challenge. Helio then fought throughout Brazil , in countless tournaments , contests and fights without rules , achieving significant victories achieved his martial art was recognized as highly effective . In 1951, Hlio faced a great wrestler Judo, Japanese Masahiko Kimura, who defeated Helio Gracie trapping him in one of his favorite arm called dislocations ude-garami and renamed by Gracie as' Kimura lock 'or' key Kimura 'in his honor. His brother, who stood in the corner threw in the towel to see that Helio was caught with a good key, which could break his arm. The Jiu -Jitsu came to worldwide fame thanks to television in the early nineties, a period in which Royce Gracie, son of Helio Gracie, exponent and expert in Jiu -Jitsu wins the first 1993, second 1994 and fourth championship UFC 1994, Ultimate Fighting Championship which at the time were single elimination . Royce fought against much larger opponents often and practicing other styles such as kickboxing, kempo, Shootfighting, wrestling, Taekwondo, among others. Once again, as it did his father Helio Gracie in Brazil 40 years ago , the Jiu -Jitsu represented in this case by Royce Gracie proved especially effective at winning this , the tournament . Since then it has become a staple art for many MMA fighters, calling his attention and demonstrating the importance of ground fighting .

The Gracie family had a starring role in the first open tournament vale tudo and mixed martial arts. Jiu- Jitsu currently undergoing a period of expansion in the world that has no precedent, thanks to the efficiency of his technique. In its structure, the Jiu Jitsu aims to reach the Olympics being the International Confederation of Brazilian Jiu -Jitsu, located in Rio de Janeiro, who exploits and promotes the idea. Therefore the benefits it can have a bigger opponent standing as a broader and more powerful attacks are largely canceled when ground fighting . The Jiu -Jitsu allows a wide variety of throwing techniques and takedown to take the fight to the ground. Once the opponent is on the floor , a series of movements ( and against movement ) with the help of the inertia is used to manipulate the opponent in a position suitable for the application of a technique for the win. Achieving a dominant position on the ground is one of the characteristics of Jiu -Jitsu, either side control, north-south control, or position control mounted in the back. This system of movement, control and manipulation can be likened to a kinetic chess or moving. When a submission is done it can be compared with checkmate , because in a real situation you would have a difficult handicap to overcome and even be victorious in the fight ( examples of this would be a dislocated joint or unconsciousness , fatigue or strangulation ) .
