Appendix:
Background of the project:
Employing children for household help is a fairly common practice in Bangladesh, and the reason mainly put down to the prevailing extreme poverty, as the economic vulnerability creates huge supply of child labor in the informal labor market. Because of huge supply, the incentives offered are less i.e. long working hours, insufficient food, poor living environment, no recreational facility. In worst cases, they also have to endure physical and sexual abuse, bullying, which is very likely to happen to most the domestic workers. Due to girls expertise in household works and their submissiveness nature, the employers prefer to employ them over the boys; and the employers rational choice take 83% of girls as domestic house help (Rahman, 1995). The majority of these employers are the middle class working class, who mainly live in the cities; thus the trend is higher in cities. Dhaka, being

the mega city employs around 132,000 (BBS, UNICEF, 2006) children in house hold work and 94% of them are girls. Bangladesh, one of the beginners of CRC signatories and initiator of the different constitutional laws for childrens best interest has not been successful in eradicating the practice of child labor or ensuring their basic facilities at work, mainly due to the reluctance of law enforcement authority to take these laws into action. As a result, they are severely deprived of proper wages, healthcare and other facilities that hold them back from reaching their full potential.

Nari Maitree has been implementing the Domestic Children development project in Dhaka city covering 400 domestic children workers. This program aimed to change the future and livelihood of these children by providing them with the opportunity to participate in skill development training, as well as, enhancing their levels of literacy.
