Questions 26 – 30
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

1 “Why do the grown-ups do things like that?” Dan asked, moving closer
to his friend, Kum, who was still panting because they had been running
down the hot sandy patch.

2 Kum’s silence had compelled Dan to be quiet. So Dan turned to the

group of monks and the laymen of the village as they sat in the glaring sun. 5
The monks were chanting in unison, with their hands cupped in the manner
of praying and their eyes closed while the villagers crouched in
concentration.

3 Why must they perform such a ritual in the terribly hot sun? Dan wanted
to ask but then he dared not disturb the solemnity of the gathering. In front 10
of everybody there was a toad tied to a stake. The animal was trying vainly
to free itself, mortified by the human din and exposure.

4 Dan was perplexed, his eyebrows curved into a silent question. Shifting
uncomfortably, he once more searched Kum’s face for explanation. Kum
remained serious. 15

5 “Why?” Dan tried to whisper, nudging his friend with his elbow.

6 Kum made a low grunting sound, then lapsed into his seriousness once
more, staring intently at the monks and old men and women as if he was
being stupefied by the awesome rite.

7 Dan’s own grandmother and Kum’s grandmother were among the 20

people watching the ritual. Missing were the school teacher and the
shopkeeper. The latter had already packed his bags and moved elsewhere
since there was no more money to be made from the drought-stricken
peasants.

8 Under this burning sun you could cook an egg in the sand, Dan was 25
thinking, and why? Why do they make themselves so pitiful? The boy was
moved by the sight of his grandmother as she swayed her perspiring,
emaciated body to the rhythm of helplessness. Dan recalled what she had
said to the family, that if the monsoon did not come soon, it would mean
famine. She lamented further, saying that in her life she had never been 30
through any year as bad as this.

9 The wind from the burning rice fields seared hot and dry, carrying dust
of two successive years of drought, breeding sorrow and fear, hunger and
sickness.

10 The streams and the dams were dry, the earth cracked in millions of 35
fissures. What could the villagers do then but torment themselves and the
toad so that the supernatural would take pity on them and give them rain.

11 The rain-begging rite was their last hope when human resources failed.
But Dan, being only six years old, did not understand the meaning of it.

1119/2 10
LTS 2007 SET 1 1119/2

Nevertheless, he had been taught to respect the solemnity of the monks 40

and the old people.

12 As if he could not bear the ceremony any longer, Kum gave up his
serious pose. Taking Dan by the hand, he led the way, walking off, yet still
in awe and silence. They went along the track where they had come.

13 Hunger drove them from the emptiness of the fields into the woods to 45
hunt for lizards. When they had caught a few of these reptiles, Kum made a
fire and cooked their catch. After the scanty meal that had been wordlessly
eaten, Kim stopped being sulky.

14 Lying under the shade of the tamarind tree, Kum said: “They tried to beg
for rain from the lords,” 50

15 “Will it rain then?” Dan asked

16 “It might,” Kum said ruefully.

17 Dan scanned the skies for clouds which would give rise to their hope.

18 “Maybe in the evening,” Dan hoped. It was also Dan’s attempt to

comfort his friend. 55

Sonnet 18

Shall I compare thee to summer’s day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;
And every fair from fair sometimes declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimm’d;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
When in internal lines to time thou grow’st.
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

33 Read the extract from the short story The Lotus Eater below and answer the
questions that follow.

“I had some money,” replied Wilson. “I had some savings and I sold my house in
London. With this money, I bought an annuity for twenty-five years. Each year, I get enough
money to live a simple life. But the money will come to an end after twenty-five years. So,
when I am sixty, I will have no more money. That will be the end.”
He did not say exactly what he was going to do when the money was finished. But I
understood what he planned to do. I felt a cold shiver running through me. But, it was his
own life and he could do what he liked with it.
Before he left that night, Wilson asked me if I’d like to see his house. So, two or three
days later, I went to see him. He lived in a small cottage. The cottage was in a vineyard, far
from the town. There was a beautiful view from the cottage out over the sea. There was a
huge flowering tree beside the door of the cottage. The tree was covered with large, brightly
coloured flowers. It looked beautiful.
