But the biggest impact of a connected car initiative is that it makes possible new business models. Analyst firm Gartner reports that connected vehicle innovations will not only define the automotive industrys next century, but also offer new business opportunities for automakers. As the vehicle becomes the ultimate mobile device, new value propositions will emerge and business models will be disrupted.1 A connected-vehicle approach provides you with the opportunity to move beyond a business model that is focused strictly on vehicle sales. Teams throughout your company can focus on the sum of the automobile ownership, driving experience and userrelated aspects of your business. The foundation for the creation of these new business models is a complete, holistic view of how technology and contextualized information work together. Automotive leaders who successfully integrate a more analytical mind-set throughout their business will gain significant competitive advantageand by its nature, event-based vehicle connectivity delivers a remarkable wealth of data in context. Analytics helps you to make that data actionable, and for that reason analytics is a feature in the vast majority of the potential use cases for connected-vehicle initiatives. You can analyze the behavior of vehicles. You can analyze the behavior of buyers. The information you receive makes it possible for you to provide enhanced customer services such as safety aids or geospatial related features. You can extend warranty analytics into the realm of the predictive rather than the reactive.

Connected car initiatives are fostering new business models

As the buyers of cars and trucks become more sophisticated and demanding, you are preparing to meet their expectations. Basic transportation will no longer suffice as consumers come to expect their vehicles to provide them with electronic devices that inform them, entertain them and keep them safe. You are already making efforts to help buyers enjoy the overall experience of the car they purchase. Since this experience is a key differentiator in attracting consumers, you seek new capabilities that will deliver a competitive advantage. You are interested in technologies that will deliver innovative connected car capabilities.

Use an event-based messaging infrastructure to achieve success

Business leaders might be surprised at how much difference a messaging appliance can make. When you can eliminate many point-to-point connections, you can reduce the time that is required to develop, test and implement new services. While traditional HTTP protocol and REST-based architectural approaches remain useful, these technologies are no longer sufficient to meet the full spectrum of todays messaging demands. The IBM MessageSight appliance employs the open-source MQTT protocol. This protocol is lightweight enough to be supported by the smallest devices, yet robust enough to ensure that important messages arrive at their destinations.

Recovery for reconnection is built-in. The MessageSight appliance acknowledges connection and carries on with the missionwithout any involvement of the application at all. Consider these examples: Usage-based information for insurance companies. Today, messaging technologies help insurers to determine the specific mileage upon which premiums are basedand, with the IBM approach, insurers can measure how a person drives. Insurance leaders are quick to recognize the value of a messaging technology that can reduce cost, minimize risk factors and improve service to customers. Insurers can combine individualized usage-based information with other information that applies to developing risk factorsfor example, alerting an individual

driver to the presence of an icy road ahead. Insurers have a way to provide feedback and guidance to each customer, helping each individual to reduce driving risks and thus lower their insurancepremium costs. Increased efficiencies for f leet management. Costs are reduced and time is saved when a fleet management company can achieve near-real time communication between the driver, the vehicle itself and the companys sales order system. Advantages can include providing more-accurate estimates for delivery times and automatic alerts for re-routing around traffic problems. Dramatically reduced costs for vehicle-rental companies. When a rental company can implement remote vehicle-unlocking capability, the company does not require that personnel be present to rent out vehicles. No longer must the rental company place employees at desks late at night, waiting for one person to collect a car.

An event-based messaging infrastructure makes it possible for you to create innovative connected car capabilities.

Use cases for IBM MessageSight

Vehicle remote services. These services involve a connection between the driver and the drivers car using a smartphone or tablet. With remote services, the driver can unlock car doors or get the car up to temperature in advance on a cold day. Remote services make it possible to store preferences in the cloud such as synching the drivers radio-station preferences or ideal car-seat position. Using vehicle remote services, the car driver can check on the cars battery or on the fuel level, and can discover whether the vehicle has a flat tire. Simple things can make life easier for the driver, such as honking the horn or flashing the car lights so that the driver can discover where to locate the car in a crowded parking lot. Automobile manufacturers are interested in vehicle remote services because these services increase the contact between a driver and their car, thus forging a stronger connection between the driver and the manufacturers brand. Another important aspect that you must consider: people have grown accustomed to the rapid pace of change of consumer electronics, so they demand almost-instant response times when they deal with technology in the office, in the home or in the vehicle. Some early examples of connected car services use short message service (SMS) messages, but this approach presents disadvantages in terms of cost and speed. With an increase in the sophistication of the servicesand with a sharp rise in customer expectationyou require efficient, fast, more-scalable solutions as you provide services throughout your range of models.

What automotive leaders can expect from the IBM MessageSight appliance Scalability and high performance. Experience high throughput for large numbers of vehicles. Highly reliable connections. Take action to ensure that critical messages are delivered and received. A simpler application-development paradigm. Make the most of native application development, including Android and iOS. Security-rich connectivity. Expect a DMZ-ready appliance that requires no user-level operating system. Simpler integration. Extend and connect to existing IBM WebSphere MQ and IBM WebSphere Application Server infrastructures.

IBM Software

The MessageSight appliance is capable of supporting one million concurrent vehicles and mobile devices, and can scale up to 13 million messages per second.2
The IBM MessageSight appliance is particularly significant for vehicle remote services, because the IBM appliance provides you with a way to scale your operations with ease. You can employ a single approach to the infrastructure to introduce services throughout your entire set of vehicles more quickly. When you take advantage of the fast, responsive nature of the IBM messaging approach, your teams can become more efficient. They are free to develop new innovative applications. You can provide a better customer experience of your brand. Examine what appears to be a simple case: unlocking a car door. The cars driver uses a smartphone app to send an unlock request. The driver does not realize it, but the app is using MQTT under the covers to give a responsive experience for the driver. The app connects to the MessageSight appliance, which confirms the authentication of the request. Then the app sends the message containing the unlock request. The appliance forwards the unlock command to an embedded MQTT client in the car. All these actions take place almost instantly, and the car is unlocked. Do not underestimate the value that new messaging technologies can bring. With the IBM approach, you can achieve low latency-messaging and quicker authentication. And a simple application programming interface (API) for messaging makes it possible for you to manage initiatives easily, helping you to manage complexity.

Vehicle condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. As technologies evolve, you can now collect data from an increasing range of vehicle sensors. A large amount of vehicle data is even available using aftermarket onboard diagnostic (OBD) devices. Vehicle condition monitoring provides valuable insights that enable you to identify the root cause of a warranty claim, such as whether it is a usage or productionrelated issue. Warranty costs are very significant for automotive manufacturers, so even small improvements in the warranty process can amount to millions of dollars in savings and can lead to significant gains in profitability. For example, analysis of your data might reveal that a defective part is responsible for a high number of warranty claims, and reveal the fact that the defect is actually the result of a production-quality issue. Armed with this knowledge, you can pinpoint the cause of the production problem and implement an appropriate solution. You have the power to eliminate unnecessary claims. And you can reduce warranty claim fraud, since you can learn how each vehicle and its components are operating. Gain the power to reduce the product recalls that can have such negative impact in the press and media. Manage the recall process in a manner that supports your brand and enable over the air updates. When data becomes instantly visible, you have an opportunity to learn more about how specific auto parts are performing. Take advantage of new knowledge that can lead to improved product development and that can directly reduce cost.

The warranty period for automobiles was 90 days in the 1930s and has steadily increased to 10year warranty terms for certain models and parts.3

IBM Software

Explore the opportunities of integration with dealerships. When you have the ability to use vehicle data and analytics to their full potential, you can please drivers and reduce warranty costs. With thousands of sensors in each car, a dealer can now be notified of the exact problem when a check engine light becomes active, and can even learn of potential failures before the failures occur. You can alert the cars driver to the potential problem and when the driver arrives at the dealership, everything is prepared. Any exchange of parts can be accomplished quickly, the driver is pleased and you can help dealerships manage resource allocation. The IBM MessageSight appliance is especially well-suited for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance, because you gain access to steady streams of two-way data. You can integrate that data more easily with your analytics services, combining current data with historical data to deliver unprecedented levels of actionable information.

Advanced driver assistance and autonomous driving. There was a time when automobile buyers desired nothing more than pure horsepower, but those traditional values are changing along with technology. Consumers have high expectations of the vehicular experience, and driver aids are becoming ever more important as industry leaders look toward the future. For example, imagine that an accident has occurred ahead on the road, but a car driver is unaware of the accident. The cars ahead brake heavily, and this information is broadcast to the MessageSight appliance. Analytics that is being performed on the in flight data reveals that several cars have braked heavily in the same geographical area. With MessageSight, a geographical fence is established. The car driver is notified immediately of a queue ahead and potential danger.

Advanced driver-assistance systems are destined to improve safety and economy. Embedded software can combine with sensors, lasers and radar to help drivers to avoid accidents and to drive more efficiently. Some drivers already expect that their vehicle will come with lane departure warnings, adaptive cruise control, infrared night vision and parking aids. Some drivers expect that their new car that will automatically brake to avoid a collisionand that the car will park itself. Gartner predicts that by 2016, three automakers will have announced concrete plans for upcoming automobile launches that will offer autonomous vehicle technology.4 The day will come when drivers trust their vehicle enough that they will turn their focus to other endeavors, such as checking email, using their business applications or watching a movie. Many of these autonomous or driver-assistance features are not possible without wireless data connectivity. Sensor information must be communicated reliably. Vehicle data certainly will be used within other infrastructures to improve safety, to monitor and direct traffic flow and to manage transportation. Because the traditional request-and-response method of messaging is no longer sufficient, the IBM MessageSight appliance can deliver especially strong value in the areas of advanced driver assistance and autonomous driving. Event-based, bi-directional messaging makes it possible for data to be sent to and from the vehicle when the data is required, meaning that the MessageSight appliance is of great interest to leaders in the automotive industry. Low latency is very important in safety related features, and the MessageSight appliance is capable of delivering very low latency times. While core safety systems should remain in the vehicle, these safety systems can be augmented with insights from the cloud computing environment. Coupling this IBM appliance to streaming analytics software such as IBM InfoSphere Streams, you can expect processing many streams of concurrent data very quickly. Get actionable intelligence in near-real time.
