Subject or Topic:

Moon: Tides & Eclipse

Section

STANDARD: 3.3.3.B1: Relate the rotation of the earth and day/night, to the apparent movement of the sun, moon, and stars across the sky. Describe the changes that occur in the observable shape of the moon over the course of a month. I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes): 3rd grade students will be able to identify tide and eclipse and their relation to the moon by labeling their various parts and characteristics.

II. Instructional Materials Science Explorer/ Astronomy Prentice Hall: Teacher Edition The Moon Book by Grail Gibbons Neok12.com/eclipse http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_201ttTSG30 http://www.neok12.com/video/Eclipse/zX027e52507b754877644063.htm Teacher created worksheets - Venn diagram - Eclipse labeling - Vocabulary Smart board Doc camera

III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea) Prerequisites Fine motor skills. Works of gravity. Key Vocabulary Eclipse- the partial or total blocking of one object by another.

Solar Eclipse- occurs when the moons phase pass between Earth and the sun, blocking the sunlight from reaching Earth. Lunar Eclipse- occurs at a full moon when Earth is directly between the moon and the sun. Umbra- a cone-shaped darkest part of the moons shadow. Penumbra- larger part of the shadow. Tide- the rise and fall off the level of water in the ocean. 1) Comparing and contrasting Lunar and Solar eclipse. 2) Roles of penumbra and umbra in an eclipse. 3) Moon and its effects on tides. C. Big Idea 1) Eclipse and Tides and its relationship to the moon. IV. Implementation A. Introduction 1. To introduce the lesson teacher will ask the students a question: Have you ever been to the beach and built a sand castle? 2. Students will draw a before and after picture of their castle. Starting from the beginning of the day when they first built it, to the end of the day when it was time to go. 3. Teacher will ask: What do you think destroyed your sand castle, and why? B. Development 1. Teacher will read pages from the Moon Book about tides. 2. Teacher will go over the Moon Book and relate it to the childrens sand castles and the waves at the beach. 3. Teacher will put up a diagram of high and low tides on the Smart board. 4. Students will go up and label A, B, C, or D for high or low tides. 5. Teacher will explain the reason for the level of the tides and how it relates to gravity. 6. Teacher will show the videos on Lunar and Solar Eclipse. 7. Students will complete a Venn Diagram as a class on the smart board comparing and contrasting Lunar and Solar Eclipse. 8. Students will go back to their seats and complete a fill in the blank worksheet on the vocabulary words they have acquired from the lesson. 9. Teacher will go through the answers with the class on the doc camera. 10. Teacher will give the students a chance to answer before she reveals the correct answer. 11. Students will complete a labeling worksheet for Lunar and Solar Eclipses. 12. Teacher will collect it.

C. Closure 1. Thumbs- Up/ Down: Teacher will read out characteristics and information of Lunar and Solar Eclipse. 2. Students will put thumbs up for true and thumbs down for false.

D. Accommodations/Differentiation Guided notes on the Eclipse video included for Sally who has ADHD. E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan 1. Formative Lunar Solar Eclipse labeling worksheet. Thumbs Up/ Down- closure 2. Summative

V. Reflective Response A. Report of Students Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (after lesson is taught) Remediation Plan B. Personal Reflection VI. Resources
