TO: John Marks FROM: Tom Dougherty SUBJECT: Description of Job Applications DATE: March 6, 2014 Internship Position-

Micro Interventional Devices, Inc. The company Micro Interventional Devices, Inc. operates through the slogan, Taking Aim at Structural Heart Disease. I discovered this company through a simple Google Maps search of medical manufacturer companies located in the general vicinity of my permanent address in Chalfont, Pa. While there was no explicit advertisement for an internship position, I was able to communicate with the companys Marketing Communications Manager, Katherine Whitman, in order to obtain information on potential positions. I have included this correspondence in subsequent pages and I will now discuss the internship position. Job Description As I mentioned briefly above, there was no available job description located on this companys website or anywhere else. Although I could not obtain information in this manner, I utilized the Contact Us feature located on the company website to send a brief message describing my intentions of learning more of the opportunities available at the company. In just a few days, I received an email from Katherine Whitman, the Marketing Communications Manager at Micro Interventional Devices, Inc. She discussed how there were indeed internship opportunities available for the summer of 2014, and she encouraged me to send her my resume and a cover letter. I was to address my materials to Manuel Rausch, the Director of Research and Development at the company, and Katherine would pass along my information to him. In later emails with Katherine, I was able to obtain some general knowledge of the internship positions available at Micro Interventional Devices, Inc., which essentially took the place of a posted job description. In general, the company expected self-motivated and creative employees with strong interpersonal skills. A general knowledge of the cardiovascular system was also required, including fluid flow analysis and structural components of the heart. This internship position was a 10week program from the beginning of June to the beginning of August, and it was a paid position. Audience and Rhetorical Analysis Most of the research that I conducted on Micro Interventional Devices, Inc. came directly from the companys webpage, in addition to some news articles. The webpage discusses the primary product that the company is responsible for, Permaseal. This is a device that greatly reduces the invasiveness of heart repair surgeries by complying with the beating heart and leaving no foreign material behind after removal. From the description of this product and other products, I learned that this company focuses primarily on the cardiovascular system, and that a secure knowledge of fluid flow and solid mechanics in a biological environment would be essential for an internship with this company. To account for this in my resume, I listed my relevant university courses first (with fluid mechanics at the top of the list), and I elaborated on my experience with this course in my cover letter. In addition, under the section Engineering Projects in my resume, I discussed my development of a phototherapy medical device. While this device may be unrelated to the specific cardiovascular interests of the company, I thought that it was important to highlight any design experience that I have attained. I also made sure to research some of the companys employees, specifically the person whom I was addressing my cover letter to, Manuel Rausch. After reading though his LinkedIn profile, I learned that he completed

undergraduate degrees in both biomedical and mechanical engineering, which are degrees that I am also currently working on now. I therefore made sure to include my degree intentions in both my resume and my cover letter to build common ground between us. I also included y previous work experience in my resume to show that I am accustomed to a work environment. Volunteer Position- College Student Summer Volunteer Program at Doylestown Hospital The other position that I was interested in was the College Student Summer Volunteer Program at Doylestown Hospital in Doylestown, PA. I discovered this position while searching the websites of many nearby hospitals for information on volunteer positions that would give me experience in my field. Job Description Unlike the Micro Interventional internship, this volunteer position had a posted job description on the Doylestown Hospital website. This posting went into some detail on about how this volunteer opportunity was a 10-week position, with this one starting in late May. The position was designed primarily to provide college students with a medical-related degree an opportunity to become acquainted to a hospital environment. Through working with various nurses and physicians, volunteers could expect to receive valuable training on medical practices, and the hours obtained from this program could be reported to graduate schools. Generally, this position mentioned that consistency and quality service were the main skills that were desired of applicants. In addition to this, various criminal clearances were required with an application, which suggests the paramount importance that this position places on caring for actual human patients (as opposed to developing products that affect patients, but not actually interacting face-to-face with them). Audience and Rhetorical Analysis A lot of what I have learned about both the people and the environment that I will hopefully get a chance to interact with through this position has been attained through both the Doylestown Hospital website and through my personal experience with the hospital. Since this facility is only about 15 minutes away from my home and is therefore my primary hospital, I have a fairly good understanding of both the environment and the types of people there. As is probably true with most hospitals, the nurses, physicians, and various other employees here are very focused on creating an environment that is safe and healthy for the patient. Any viruses, both in the literal sense and in terms of people who do not care for the patient, are often eliminated. With this in mind, I made sure that both my resume and cover letter sold me as someone who has had experience caring for people in the past. An example of this in my resume is when I describe my experience at Peace Valley Nature Center (also a volunteer position) and how I was responsible for caring for younger children in a summer camp. As far as actual skills that would be required of me through participating in this program, I tried to include as widespread of a skillset as possible. The reason that I did this was because I really was not sure exactly which skills would be required of me (unlike the Micro Interventional internship where I knew that the cardiovascular system would be the primary focus), so I tried to appear as well-versed as possible. And finally, as far as specific people whom I would interact with, there was no single person that I knew I would be communicating with so I did not narrow my resume and cover letter down in order to better communicate with a single employee.

1013 South Allen Street, Apt. 611 State College, PA 16801 March 6, 2014 Manuel Rausch, PhD Director of Research and Development Micro Interventional Devices, Inc. 5 Caufield Place, Suite 102 Newtown, Pa 18940 Dear Manuel Rausch: After researching various medical device companies throughout the Delaware Valley, I was immediately drawn toward Micro Interventional Devices, Inc. and its emphasis on minimally invasive structural heart repair procedures. This company seems to match well with my interests and abilities, so I would like to express my desire for an internship with this company. I have attached a resume that is available for your review that describes my experiences in biomedical and mechanical engineering at Penn State University. Through the universitys curriculum, I have gained valuable experience in both analyzing and designing medical systems and devices, as well as communicating the results to my peers. A specific class that I am currently taking, Biofluid Mechanics, focuses primarily on blood flow through the heart, which I believe coincides with this companys focus on cardiovascular medical solutions. In addition to my Biofluid Mechanics class, I have had an extensive exposure to other biomedical and mechanical engineering courses including Mechanical Design, Cell and Molecular Bioengineering, Biothermodynamics, and Analysis of Physiological Systems. These courses have given me a firm foundational knowledge of the various skills required in the medical industry, and I have already applied these skills to designing and developing some devices which I have detailed in my resume. I feel that my persistent effort and creativity can serve as a benefit to Micro Interventional Devices, Inc., so I would be thrilled to communicate further with you on any available positions. Thank you very much for your consideration. Sincerely, Thomas Dougherty

1013 South Allen Street, Apt. 611 State College, PA 16801 March 6, 2014 Volunteer Services Doylestown Hospital 595 West State Street Doylestown, Pa 18901 Dear Hiring Manager: For the better part of the nearly 21 years that I have been alive, I have on several occasions been forced to rely upon the nurses and physicians of Doylestown Hospital to mend any broken bones, stitch up any tissue wounds, and check for any ailments. Through every such undesirable occasion, I was deeply satisfied with both the individual care and treatment that I received. As a biomedical engineering undergraduate student looking to make such differences in the lives of others, I would like to express my sincere interest in applying for the College Student Summer Volunteer Program at Doylestown Hospital. I have attached a resume that is available for your review that describes my experiences in caring for others, as well as my background in medical related courses at Penn State University. Throughout my high school years and even into college, I have volunteered at Peace Valley Park in Doylestown, Pa where I have cared for young children in the summer program. My responsibilities included monitoring the children over the duration of each activity as well as making sure that they were supplied with proper nourishment at regular intervals throughout the day. I believe that I can take the skills that I have acquired from this experience and easily adapt them to patient care at a hospital. In addition to my care-related experience, I also have a solid background knowledge of the medical field. From courses in solid and fluid mechanics, electrical systems analysis, and mechanical design, I have acquired some very practical knowledge of medical devices and systems that are commonly used in the hospital complex. I am very interested in using this fundamental background information in order to gain some hands-on experience with at this hospital facility. Overall, I believe that the skills that I have mentioned, in addition to my persistent effort and strong interpersonal skills, can serve as a tremendous benefit to the workplace environment at Doylestown Hospital. I look forward to further discussing my qualifications and interests with you at a later time. Thank you very much for your consideration. Sincerely, Thomas Dougherty
