ArcGIS Assignment:

ArcGIS Online is a relatively simple mapping platform that offers you the ability to create interactive maps and apps, and share them with an organization or the general public. Here is the assignment on exploring ArcGIS and creating maps. Q1: Which basemap did you select? Imagery with labels. I selected this basemap because it helps me to see the topography with the labels. It helps me to have a clearer picture of what Im looking at.

What kinds of layers would work well with this basemap? Many of the layers including layers related to weather, severe weather, earthquakes, volcanos, density of population, and other layers that would be useful information in the event a natural disaster hit. Here is an example of a few.

Q2: Along the San Diego Trolley map, which is the highest income block group? Which is the lowest income block group? The dark blue has a medium household income of 82,000. The lightest shade of pink which has a medium household income of 24,000 or less.

Q3: When you see the Household Income level map with the San Diego Trolley line, do you see any spatial relationship between the two layers? Can you explain the spatial relationship you observe (that is, what is the spatial relationship and

why do you think it exists?)? The map shows a relation between income and the route of the trolley line. As depicted in the map you can see that trolley line does not have a route that travels through the areas where income is 82,000 or more. The majority of the route travels through the block areas that are in the pink shades which are between the income levels of below 24,000 a year through 53,000 a year. I believe that people who generally make a lower income rely more heavily on public transportation as oppose to those that are making a higher income. Q4: According to the map, which Trolley Line runs parallel to a fault line? By the way, Mission Valley was created, in part, due to this fault line. The Orange Trolley Line runs right along the pacific plate. The Green Trolly line runs right along a fault line. Q5: What is the name of the fault line? The name of this fault along the green trolley line is on is the Newport-Inglewood - Rose Canyon fault zone, San Diego section.

Q6: What are the main differences between "Maps" and "Web Apps"? Which Map and Web Apps did you select? Discuss what you liked and what you didnt like for each of your examples. There arent many differences between the web apps and maps. The main
differences between maps and web app are the maps allow the user to manipulate the features, where as there isnt much you can change about the web apps. The web map I really enjoyed looking at and were well put together were the Oso Mudslide Victims map. It shows which victims from the damaged homes survived, which ones didnt survive, and the victims that are still currently missing. This is a great

map to use to keep up to date on the relief efforts that are going on in Oso currently. Another map that was interesting to view was the map related to Crimea Crisis. It had a historical chronology of the events that took place before, during, and after the Russian overtake of Crimea.

Q7: What are the main differences between "Maps" and "Web Apps" for your Trolley map? Which one did you prefer? Which one, in your opinion, would be best for publication and display? The differences between the two would be again, the ability to manipulate information. In the map version you can change things around to make it more useful for the personal viewer, whereas the web app is set how the publisher intended it to look. I personally like the web map for the user, but if data and information should not be manipulated I would prefer the web app. I believe the web app is better suited for publication and display. Below is a published application I create for the assignment:

Q8: What is the URL of your map? Please provide a description of your map. What basemap did you use, and what is (are) the layer(s) you added to your map? The Url of the map I created is http://bit.ly/1f2xwAk. The basemap I used is Imagery with Label. This is a map depicting the Great Hurricane of 1926 that hit Miami. It also depicts the population of this area today. It is good to look at the growth of todays population and how many people could be affected if a Hurricane of that size were to make landfall today.

Q9: What is the URL of your Web Application? Which Template did you select for your Web Application? What are the differences between the Web Application and the Map in ArcGIS online? Dont forget to include a screenshot of your Web Application.
https://www.arcgis.com/apps/PanelsLegend/index.html?appid=4c600806bb314441bd28b83e9e46f86f

I selected the Legend Template. As I mentioned above the differences are in the web application the user can download other layers or manipulate the map if they would like. The web application was not meant for manipulation. Below is a screen shot of the published version.

Reflection: This assignment was very educational and does provide a great deal of information on how combining mapping and data could be very useful in the event a natural disaster were to occur. I live in a small town of about 31,000 people called Pullman, Washington which is located in Eastern Washington. In my area, our greatest hazard is in the event a volcanic eruption occurred along the west coast. While most of the volcanos that could erupt are a few hundred miles away, we have learned from the Mt. Saint Helens eruption that we are still close enough to deal with the effects of one. The ArcGIS allows us to use physical geography and the U.S. census demographics, along with a plethora of information. This information can be quite useful for first responders in the event that a disaster did occur. For example, when Mt Saint Helens did erupt, it would be useful to know how heavily populated the areas are that were directly affected and indirectly affected. This would also be useful to communicate the information to different areas on how the people in the area should handle the situation, what they could expect, and how to appropriately respond. While here in Pullman, Washington, which is approximately 300 miles away from Mt. Saint Helens, our small town was covered in ash as result to its eruption. This prompted air quality concerns and caused local authorities to caution residents to remain inside their homes while cleanup efforts were underway. It also issued concerns for the farming here. Our area provides much of the nations supplies of lentils and also grows a variety of grains including wheat. The effects of the ash caused concerns for the crops as ash could cause direct damage as well as indirect damage. Over all this information is quite useful and could help us in the event another eruption were to occur.
