-:General Information:The term "Holiday" dates back to the days of the great wooden sailing ships.

During the long slow voyages, ship maintenance was a must. One of the most important duties was that of the mast sealer. A sailor would seal the mast of the ship with tar to prevent the wood from rotting. If the sailor missed coating an area of the mast the wood would rot. It was said, the sailor must have taken a Holiday at that point thus not achieving a good coat of tar on the mast. Later as steel replaced wood, paint replaced tar. However, holidays live on. Holidays also known as, pinholes, voids, discontinuities. Holiday Detector is an instrument used to detect holes in anticorrosive coating (electrically insulated) on metallic pipes / surfaces. This test is carried before the pipes are laid underground. The pipe is connected to earth (nominal) and an electrode, charged to high tension, is moved over the coating. At the place of a hole, arcing takes place and the instrument gives alarm. The instrument consists of an electronic oscillator to convert small DC Voltage (6 V) to AC. A high voltage rectifiers to give high tension DC output. Su. Bhaskar Holiday Detector is a fully solid state device and has no moving part except the indicator pointer (Digital readout on special demand can be supplied). This has made the device maintenance-free, portable and light-weight.

CAUTION
Before switching on the instrument, connect EARTH terminal to ground. This may be done by connecting EARTH wire to any metallic object on the ground.

-:Operating Instructions:1. Turn SENSITIVITY and SET VOLTAGE knobs anti-clockwise. 2. Put ON the instrument using toggle switch. 3. Adjust output voltage to 2 kV less than desired test voltage (10 kV for 12 kV test voltage). Please note the set voltage control is a 10 turn potentiometer and will need sufficient rotation. 4. Now turn SENSITIVITY knob clockwise to start the alarm. Turn it anticlockwise so that the alarm just stops. 5. Raise the voltage to desired level (12 kV) 6. Instrument is now ready for use. [The offset voltage (2kV) - may change with situation at the time of testing. Humidity and Dielectric Strength are the major factors governing the offset voltage magnitude].

IMPORTANT: A) Do not use the instrument in explosive environment. B) Do not use the instrument when surface under test is wet. C) If BLOWN FUSE LED glows, replace the fuse. D) Non glowing of YELLOW LED means drained battery.

-:Information On Internal / External Battery:The internal power source of 6 V / 4AH is obtained by grouping 1.5 V individual cells. Facility has been provided for external battery operation, in case of failure of internal battery. Any source of 6 v.D.C. can be used to operate Holiday Detector, typically 6 V automobile (Motor Cycles battery say, Hero Honda) battery.

-:Replacing Internal Battery:1. Slant the instrument and remove brass screw (4 nos.) at the bottom. Pull the top panel to separate it from the cover. You now have access to battery compartment. Snap the battery and remove it. Place a new pack provided by us. Make electrical connections to the circuitry. Replace the cover to its initial position. Fasten the bottom screws (4 nos.).

2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

-:The Charger:The charger is of constant current mode with current adjusted between 200mA to 300mA. The charger is protected against Reverse Battery connection. When such wrong connection is made, fuse on the front panel blows off. Replace the fuse and make connections observing the polarity. Completion of charging is indicated by glow of Red LED on the charger. Charger may then be disconnected. No harm even if charger remain connected thereafter.

-:Using External Battery:-

1. Before Connecting external battery, remove the Internal Battery from the Instrument as described above. 2. Replace the cover at the end of operation. 3. A cable has been provided with crocodile clips. 4. The crocodile clips are to be connected to battery of 6 v. 5. Insert the jack at the end of the cable to charger receptacle. 6. Instrument is now ready for operation on new battery.

-:Charging Internal Battery:-

1. The charger is connected to the instrument by charging cable. (Confirm that the Instrument is in OFF Position) 2. A jack on the end of the charging cable is to be inserted in the receptacle on the side of the instrument. 3. Switch ON the charger by switching on 230v AC. 4. Charging is indicated by deflection of needle of small View Meter on the charger. 5. Full Charge is indicated by glow of Red LED on charger. 6. There is no harm to Charger or Battery even if charger remains connected thereafter.
