EDUC 2220- Educational Technology Lesson Plan Template PROFESSIONALIZATION OF TEACHING

MARY LYKENS COLUMBUS STATE COOMMUNITY COLLEGE

Common Core Standards: (Taken from Introduction to Education 2210 standardsthis is one of the core principles taught to pre-service teachers)
Professionalization. Exploration of the process by which people are socialized into and are rewarded in the field of education and the roles of institutions in determining what it means to be a professional educator, or a member of the teaching profession.

Lesson Summary: This lesson will focus on the exploration of teaching as a profession and the process people go through to pursue this career choice. The students will explore why people become teachers, qualities of effective teachers, challenges of teaching, outlook for the profession, and ultimately the steps required to become a highly qualified teacher and ultimately achieve full licensure to teach in the state of Ohio. Estimated Duration: This lesson will take two 100 minute classes (for a total of 200 minutes). Commentary: This is the first and second lesson in the Introduction to Education class for students that are considering a career in teaching. The basic challenge will be helping the students understand the steps to achieve licensure and how to select the proper school for this endeavor. There may also be a challenge of all students having access to the Internet on their phone for the survey part of the lesson. I like to get them hooked by taking a survey about why they want to be a teacher and will do this through the poll everywhere technology application.

Instructional Procedures: Day 1: First Section (40 minutes): I will pose a question to start the lesson: Why do you want to be a teacher? I will post this question by using a Poll Everywhere question: Students will be asked to respond to this question through their cell phones and the responses will be shown on the screen. There will be a short summary of how to use the Poll Everywhere program (will possibly try this in the computer lab this summer to make sure it works well and then use the phone for the next time I teach the class in the fall). There will be a class discussion regarding the responses given by the students. Many times the students like to share stories about past teachers and why they have become teachers because of the influence of these teachers.

Second Section (30 minutes): We will then begin the PowerPoint for Chapter 1 in the BECOMING A TEACHER textbook where we will cover the topics: Benefits of Teaching Teacher Salaries Challenges of Teaching Society Expectations of Teachers Federal Initiatives in Education Professional Dispositions of Teachers

Third Section (40 minutes): I will begin a pretest to see what the students know about some of the statistics about the teaching profession. Here are the questions that will be part of the Poll Everywhere survey. Students will answer these questions through the computer or cell phones. The students will then self-assess how they did on these questions to determine areas of misunderstanding. What are the greatest subject areas of need for teachers in Ohio? What parts of the country do we have the greatest need for teachers? Yes/No Are all colleges able to offer licensure training for pre-service teachers? (INTASC and NCATE) Yes/No Can you get a license to teach from CSCC? What degree must you achieve from a 4-year college in order to apply for a teaching license? What are the three main levels of licensure? Day 2: (computer lab) First Section (30 minutes): I will begin the class with the question: What concerns do you have as you begin your journey to becoming a teacher (based on last class discussion)? This will hook the students into the learning journey for the class period. Students will share concerns through a class discussion. I will review two key terms from previous class (INTASC and NCATE) and have students explain each component when determining the proper school to attend to achieve licensure. Second Section (40 minutes): I will begin explaining the journey to becoming a teacher through a PowerPoint. From high school graduation, Praxis I or community college, Praxis II or the Ohio Assessment for Educators, student teaching, courses in reading, a four-year university bachelors degree, applying for teaching license from the Ohio Department of Education, Resident Educator License, Ohio Master Teacher, and the National Board of Certified Teachers. The journey will be explained step by step. Third Section (40 minutes): Students will begin working on a Checklist assignment where they will use the technology application Evernote and store the steps they need to remember to become a teacher. It will include website links and other supporting information. They will begin this assignment in class and finish it for homework. Each student will bring in a screenshot of their checklist.

Pre-Assessment: My pre-assessment is going to be the Poll Everywhere survey with the 7 questions shown above. I will be able to evaluate what students already know about each question and be able to clarify any misconceptions as we move through the questions. Scoring Guidelines: The scoring for this pre-assessment will be teacher judgment I will have an opportunity to see which questions that most students can answer right away and questions that take a little more explaining. I will also be using a variety of formative assessments. For example, in this chapter, I will ask the following

three questions at the end of the class session: What are three benefits teachers might receive from their school district? Describe two challenges teachers face in the classroom?

Post-Assessment: Students will have a quiz on the material from Chapter 1 of the textbook. It will include multiple choices, true/false, short answer, and one essay question that revisits the theme of Professionalization. Scoring Guidelines: The assessment will be a total of 20 points and a percentage will be given after grading. Differentiated Instructional Support Students that are challenged with the assignment, I have used guided notes or even given them my notes. All students are given an opportunity to print the PowerPoint slides, but in this assignment I create guided notes that need to be filled in while the lecture is being given. Students that have accommodations get notes that are already filled in (or in some cases partially filled in) in order to help them with paying attention and learning the material. Students that are challenged are given opportunities to ask and answer higher order questions throughout the lesson. Extension My extension for this assignment includes an Ohio Department of Education Scavenger Hunt where the students look up information from the website about the Ohio Assessment for Educators (formerly Praxis II), EdTPA, and Resident Educator. I formulate questions they can answer by visiting each of these sections of the website and it takes the learning to another level. Homework Options and Home Connections Students will complete their Evernote started in class as homework. They will be asked to either e-mail or print a screen shot of their checklist created. Interdisciplinary Connections The interdisciplinary connections associated with this Unit have to do with reading and research (scavenger hunt) and a bit of history (discussion of past president and their approaches to education).
