Amna Becirovic 11/1/13 4th Hour The Odyssey Essay Kids heros are imaginary characters, but in The Odyssey, by Homer Odysseus was the true hero. Throughout the story, Odysseus, the main character, faces many obstacles and situations that make him heroic. There are three specific sections where Odysseus is most heroic: Scylla and Charybdis, Land of the Dead, and the Test of the Great Bow. To start off, Odysseus is heroic in Scylla and Charybdis, Odysseus was heroic because he was smart about choosing whether to go through Scylla, the six headed monster, or Charybdis, the dangerous whirlpool. This makes him heroic because he decides what would be best for the crew, and for himself. By choosing to go through the whirlpool he could lose his ship, and his crew, and not be able to get back to Ithaca, or by choosing Scylla, he would lose six men. Also, in Scylla and Charybdis Odysseus leds the whole crew through Scylla and Charybdis, which makes him heroic, knowing his crew i probably scared because they could be one of the six men being eaten by Scylla, or possibly going through Charybdis and losing the whole crew and the ship. Next, in Scylla and Charybdis Odysseus doesnt give up during the challenges of Scylla and Charybdis. This makes him heroic because anyone could just give up on their crew, and say were all going to die, but Odysseus didnt, he helped his crew out, and was strong. Next, Odysseus is heroic in Land of the Dead, Odysseus is heroic because he traveled to the Land of the Dead in courage, knowing that the bad souls would haunt him. This makes him heroic because he got the bad souls to back off while he was looking for the God of the Dead. Odysseus

courage makes him heroic because every hero needs to have courage. Also, Odysseus is heroic when he sees his moms soul. This makes him strong, and being strong is what can make you a hero. Not physically strong, but emotionally strong. Odysseus stayed strong while seeing his moms soul, when it was hard for him, but he moves along, and stays focussed to finding the God of the Dead. Most importantly, Odysseus accepts the future when the God of the Dead tells him his future, and how it will end up. Odysseus figures out that he will lose his crew, but he doesnt give up then on journey back to Ithaca. Odysseus accepts what his future holds, and doesnt give up. Finally, in the Test of the Great Bow Odysseus is heroic, Odysseus is heroic because he uses strength to string the bow, and shoot it. This makes him strong because none of the suitors could do it but he could. This brings up another good point of him being heroic, he stood up as a begger in front of all the suitors to try and string the bow. This makes him heroic because he stands up as a begger while all the suitors believed he wouldnt be able to string the bow. Last but not least, Odysseus is heroic in the Test of the Great Bow because Odysseus has great accuracy shooting the bow through 12 axes. This makes him heroic because he can string the bow, and use the bow to shoot it through 12 axes. In conclusion, Odysseus is most heroic in Scylla and Charybdis, Land of the Dead, and Test of the Great Bow by facing many obstacles and situations. Odysseus shows great courage and strength, and never gives up until he gets what he wants. As we get older we start to realize who our real heros are, and Odysseus is one.
