Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate Brittany Queen School Brewer Middle School Date and Time of Lesson 3/25/14, 1:56 pm Subject/Grade Level Math 6th grade

Description of Lesson: The students will plot points in a four quadrants. They will graph geometric figures in the coordinate plane when given a set graphed points or listed ordered pairs. Lesson Title: Graphing Geometric Figures Curriculum Standards Addressed: Common Core Standard(s): 6.NS Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system. 6. Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative numbers. b. Understand signs of numbers in ordered pairs as indicating locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane; recognize that when two ordered pairs differ only by signs, the locations of the points are related by reflections across one or both axes. 8. Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. 6.G Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. 3. Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving realworld and mathematical problems. SC Curriculum Standard(s): 6-4 The student will demonstrate through the mathematical processes an understanding of shape, location, and movement within coordinate system; similarity, complementary, and supplementary angles; and the relationship between line and rotational symmetry. SC Academic Indicator(s): 6-4.2 Apply strategies and procedures to find the coordinates of the missing vertex of a square, rectangle, or right triangle when given the coordinates of the polygons other vertices. Instructional Objective(s) Criteria: When given graphed points or a list of ordered pairs, student will be able to graph geometric figures on the coordinate plane. Students should be able to accurately graph and identify the geometric figure for each problem given. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: After working through examples, the students will be given problems to work out on their own. As they work, I will walk around and observe how well each student is doing. I will discuss the solutions with the class, and answer any questions the students may have.

Materials/Resources: Pen/Pencil, Notebook, Textbook, Promethean Board, White Board and Markers Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): Understand integers Understand the signs of numbers in each quadrant Use ordered pairs containing integers Use polygons that have been orientated horizontally Locate/plot points in a coordinate plane Find the coordinates of a missing vertex than the ones given in a list or on a graph Understand the characteristics of certain polygons (square, triangle, parallelogram, etc.) References: Carnegie Learning Math Series: A Common Core Math Program, Course 1 Volume 2 (Textbook) Cooperating Teacher Procedures: The lesson will be presented using a Promethean background. It will begin with a discussion of graphing in four quadrants; this will be used as a brief reminder of what they learned the day before. The students will be prompted to help them discover how to graph geometric figures using points on the graph. They will be asked to identify what they know about vertices, lines, distance, and more. I will work through problems with them and give them time to practice some problems on their own. The students will be asked to tell me the solutions to each problem, and I will explain problems that students had difficulties with.
