Article summary 1 Part 1: Title: Bringing them back to life By: Carl Zimmer AAAS award winning science writer. Can you imagine, bringing an animal back into existence? Even more so, can you imagine bringing an extinct species back into existence? All of these animals that we have caused to go extinct due to us running the out of their habitats or our need for food and desire to hunt for game. At one point in time this seemed unfathomable, yet today it is right in front of us, we just have to decide what to do with it. In the article, a group of Spanish and French scientists were able to do the unthinkable. They were able to in a sense play the role of God as said by some, when they cloned an animal that had previously been extinct. It all started when a species of sheep, called the Bucardo, were being hunted by the natives of the land In France and Spain. This animal had previously been in dense population in the land and was able to survive and endue the harsh conditions of the area. When the Bucardo were scarce and only about twelve of them remained, the group of scientist were keeping track of them. When one Bucardo was left, the scientist tagged her with a tracking device so that they could keep track of her where location and status of life. The animal eventually died due to natural causes and the Bucardo officially became extinct. This group of scientist were able to preserve the cells of the last female Bucardo and keep them for the main purpose of cloning them. They were able to clone the animal, however it passed shortly after due to medical conditions. This was a huge success for science and became a controversial topic among society. Even among the scientist themselves. Was it ok to clone animals? Did we have the obligation to, due to the fact that we as humans are the very reason many have gone extinct? Is it even possible to bring them back into existence considering their natural habitats are gone? There are many questions as to what we do with the ability we now have to clone animals and even human beings.

Critical evaluation: What makes this source credible is the Author and his information. He is a scientific writer for many credible magazines and has contributed to helping science and the knowledge that we have become known. I looked into the credibility of his overall statement of the article and it checks out. Relevance to biological anthropology: This article is relevant due to the fact that it is leading into people wanting to clone animals and specific traits of animals and even one day humans. The DNA and

genomes that are found it cells give us that capability now days and it is becoming a part of science. This plays a huge role in the physical development of humanity. Take away message: We are now able to clone animals and potentially humans, what do we do with that ability?

Part 2: The most difficult part of this assignment was finding the right article to write and talk about. I found many different ones that were interesting but I was not sure if it was relevant or out of date. One questions: I would for sure want to know if it has been done on a human being. I could find the answer by researching it on the internet. The critical evaluation process: This impacted my opinion on the article in a large measure. Initially I was unsure of the credibility of the article. After looking into it and evaluating it in depth and looking into the topic I realized that it was more credible that I initially thought. Usefulness in the future: This information not only could be useful in the future, but I think that it most definitely will be. This could impact society in an immense way if we were able to clone humans and decided that it was ethical to do so. Part 3: Related source Title: Cloning of organisms Cornell University Credentials: It was published by a credible university. The Animal science department to be exact. This article explains what cloning is. It goes into detail on the way a clone is made and the scientific process behind it. Then explains the history of the knowledge we have had and how it has been changed over time. We previously thought many things about cloning and the process of cloning. With science and technology, scientist have made immense progress. The article then goes on to debate the ethics of cloning. Whether it should or should not be done and why. It goes into depth on the pros and cons of cloning animals and even human beings. There are many factors to consider. Such as disease, being able to control what diseases are passed on with the cloned animal. Age, will the cloned animal have a shorter life span due to the age of the cells being used to clone. All of these things have to be considered when cloning living organisms. We are able to clone, what do we do with it? Critical evaluation: This article is credible due to the source and it being known for helping science advance. Relevance: This article is on the exact topic of my main article. It was relevant in helping prove the credibility of the main article.
