Hodgkin Disease Cancer

Lymphomas are cancers of the lymphatic system, which is constituted by lymphatic vessels and lymphocytes (T cell and B cells). There are a lot of different forms of these cancers. They develop from T or B cells, which means that those cells will growth and multiply abnormally after their DNA has been altered (it is the same mechanism as any other cancer). Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that begins in cells of the immune system. The lympha tic system is part of the immune system. Because lymphatic tissue is in many parts of the body, Hodgkin lymphoma can start almost anywhere. Usually, it's first found in a lymph node above the diaphragm, the thin muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen. But Hodgkin lymphoma also may be found in a group of lymph nodes. Sometimes it starts in other parts of the lymphatic system. Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are both cancers of the lymphatic system. Hodgkin's disease is characterized by the presence of particular cells called Reed-Sternberg cells, whose origin unknown. It's a quite rare form of these cancers.

Treatments for Hodgkin Lymphoma Cancer and Procedures

Treatment of Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma is complex. Specialists who treat Hodgkin lymphoma include hematologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. Your doctor may suggest that you choose an oncologist who specializes in the treatment of Hodgkin lymphoma. Often, such doctors are associated with major academic centers. Your health care team may also include an oncology nurse and a registered dietitian. For localized forms, radiotherapy is efficient (X-rays are concentrated on the zone to treat). If the cancer has spread to a lot of organs, chemotherapy would be a better choice. There are new therapies in which the patient's immune system is used to fight the cancer. Drugs called interferon or monoclonal antibodies are administered to increase the action of the immune system against cancer.

If the patient suffers from a very serious form of cancer, bone marrow transplant can be necessary. A transplant is done to restore the capacity of the bone marrow to create those cells. Combination chemotherapy is almost always necessary for successful treatment. Chemothe rapy alone, or abbreviated chemotherapy and radiation, cure 70 to 80 percent of patients with limited (Stages I and II) intermediate-grade Lymphoma. Advanced (Stages III and IV) disease can be eradicated in about 50 percent of patients.
