GGS 12 Map Assignments and Quizzes
In order to be able to discuss aspects of Global Geography, we must be aware of where places are in the world. To that end, there will be a series of map assignments and quizzes that will take place at regular intervals throughout the semester. You will be expected to fill in the maps as follows: Label continents, oceans and major physical features (deserts, mountain ranges, etc) in black and in ALL CAPS WITH HORIZONTAL LABELLING. Label countries in black only the first letters are in caps horizontal Label lakes and bays in black only the first letters are in caps horizontal Label rivers in black ALONG THE COURSE OF THE RIVER (not horizontally) Use ^^^^^ symbols along the extent of a mountain range label ALONG THE LONGEST EDGE of the mountain range in black. Any specific mountain should be indicated by a solid triangle and labeled horizontally. 1. Blue for all bodies of water (oceans, rivers, lakes etc). Large bodies like oceans can be coloured along the edge of the continents you DO NOT have to fill the entire ocean in with blue. 2. Black use for labelling countries, but also for labelling the mountain range symbols. 3. Brown use for islands listed below. Like the oceans, you can just colour the outside edge. 4. Tan use to outline the extent of deserts lightly shade in the area covered by desert. 5. Colouring should NOT obscure labels legibility is EXTREMELY important. Final hint on some maps it may be difficult to label all countries directly on that map. In those cases, you must create a LEGEND, and label those countries on the map with numbers or letters. The legend will tell me which symbol corresponds to which country.
