TUTORIAL 4 - Questions

1. Three coils having a resistance of 20 and reactance of 15 are connected in star to a
400V, 50Hz, 3-phase supply. Calculate:
a) The line current
b) The total power consumed
Three capacitors of equal capacitance, arranged in delta, are connected in parallel to the
above coils so as to give a resultant power factor of 0.95 (lagging). Calculate:
c) The capacitance of each capacitor
d) The line current after the capacitors have been connected

2. A symmetrical 3-phase, 3-wire supply with a line voltage of 173V supplies two balanced 3-
phase loads, one star-connected with each branch impedance 6+j8 and the other delta-
connected with each branch impedance of 18+j24. Calculate:
a) The branch current of each load
b) The total line current
c) The power factor of the entire load

3. A factory takes the following balanced loads from a 3-phase 440V, 50Hz supply:
1. A lighting load of 20kW
2. A motor load of 30kVA at 0.5 lagging power factor
3. An intermittent welding load of 30kVA at 0.5 lagging power factor
Calculate the power rating of the capacitor required to bring the power factor of loads
consisting of (1) and (2) to unity. Give the value of each capacitor if they are connected in star.
Calculate the power factor when the welding machine is switched on with the PFC capacitors
in place.

4. A Y-Y system with supply line voltage VRY = 22Z0
o
kV has got a balanced 3 phase load with
impedance per phase of 0.4+j1k. The impedance of the transmission line is 30+j40.
Determine the magnitudes and associated phase angles of the line currents and phase
voltages on the load side. Determine the efficiency of the system. (Assume RYB phase
sequence).

5. A 3-phase delta connected load has a phase impedance of 0.3+j1k. The phase voltage on
the load side is VRY = 16Z0
o
kV. The impedance of the transmission line is 10+j20. Assuming
RYB phase sequence, calculate the magnitudes and associated angles of the supply side line
voltages.

6. A Y-Y system with a balanced load has a line impedance of 4+j20. If the supply side line
voltage is 16kV and the total power delivered to the load with a lagging power factor is 1200W
at 80A, find
a) The power factor of the load as seen by the supply
b) The magnitudes and phase angles of the load phase voltages
c) The impedance per phase of the load
d) The efficiency of the system

7. For the star-delta system shown below, the supply line voltage is VRY = 208Z0
o
V. Assuming
RYB phase sequence, determine the reading of each wattmeter and the total power delivered
to the load.

V and the phase sequence is RYB, find the total
Watts, Volt-amperes, volt-amperes reactive supplied by the source and the power factor of the
load.
