Service & Sermon Notes

Welcome to Worship
elcome to New Hope Church, now into our third century serving God! If you are visiting, you will discover a loving, spirit-filled church family. Here is some helpful information as you join us in worship today: All who worship here are equals in the sight of God, regardless of race, age, gender, physical disability or religious affiliation. Communion, when celebrated, is open to all who profess Christ as Lord and Savior, whether affiliated with this church or not. Children may partake of Communion as well, if parents approve. A nursery is available during the service; please see a greeter for directions. (This is for infants and children up to 3 years of age.) Handicap-accessible restrooms are located off the narthex (main foyer) and adjacent to the entrance lobby in the Fellowship Hall/Gym. Please complete the tear-off attendance slip attached to the bulletin and drop it in the offering plate so we will have a record of your visit with us today. Thank you for remembering to silence your cell phone during the service. We ask that there be no food or beverages in the sanctuary, please. If you arrived as a visitor we hope that you leave as a friend and worship with us often! New Hope Church exists to: Glorify God in worship and rejoice in our life together; Share the Good News of the Gospel in word and deed; Reach as many as we can with the saving love of Jesus; Help each person grow toward Christian maturity, and find their place of service in the church and in the world.

Ministries/Activities Within Our Church

Next meeting of the Session will be Tuesday night May 13, 6:30. We had so many things going during April and we kept putting it off, so we will just skip the April meeting and get back on schedule in May. I know that some of you have to arrange your obligations to be available for session meeting night so we have decided to keep it on the second Tuesday of each month. Those who would like to sign up for another 3 Wednesday night prayer meetings at 6:30 (April 30, May 7, May 14) please do so on back of your attendance sheet this morning. If there are as many as 10 people who want to attend, we will get started. I will let you know by e-mail next Monday if we are meeting April 30. New Hope Mens Ministry will have its start-up meeting this Saturday, May 3 at 8:30 in the church kitchen. This will be an organizational meeting. A lite breakfast will be served by the church staff. The Men's Ministry will be a time for men to come together for fellowship, support and building relationships. We will discuss ways to help with needs inside and outside our church, whether through handyman type projects or whatever needs may arise. We will become

the focal planning team for events that the men sponsor such as the Mothers Day Brunch and Valentines Banquet. Working with facilities manager Bill Brown, buildings and grounds maintenance (mowing) will also be a focus. Most importantly we will build on having a better relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. - Proverbs 27:17. Bicycles for Pine Ridge Indian Reservation: We are collecting bikes and trikes for the Masters Hands Outreach Ministries on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Oglala, SD. Bob Martin is heading up a mission action. Fiddlers Grove Cowboy Church is Collecting BICYCLES IN ANY CONDITION. If you have a bike or trike to donate please call, 615-585-5890 and we will be happy to pick up your donation. Deadline - May 25. Church Camps are fast approaching - We are dedicated to every child in our church, those ready for the 4th grade and older, having the privilege of going to camp this June. We serve a lot more children than we have ever served before. We have traditionally paid one half of the camp fee for every child. That will be more costly within itself this year because of the increased numbers. We also know that some of our children will not even be able to pay half their fee. We are setting a $20 minimum for each child attending camp, just to make sure that each child and their family has some investment in the program. So it may be that some of you who dont have children camp age will adopt a child and help them. See Pastor Brad if you would like to help a child get to camp this year. Stephen Ministry - Got a burden? You dont have to carry that burden alone. You can have a STEPHEN MINISTER who will spend time with you, listen to you, and walk beside you. If you or someone you know is interested in receiving care through the Stephen Ministry program at New Hope, please contact the pastor through the Church office at (615) 449-7020 and request that a Stephen minister contact you.

John 20:19-31 New International Version (NIV) Jesus Appears to His Disciples 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you! 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you. 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyones sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven. Jesus Appears to Thomas 24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus[a]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord! But he said to them, Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you! 27 Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe. 28 Thomas said to him, My Lord and my God! 29 Then Jesus told him, Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. The Purpose of Johns Gospel 30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe[b] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Footnotes: a. John 20:24 Thomas (Aramaic) and Didymus (Greek) both mean twin. b. John 20:31 Or may continue to believe

The Scripture References

1 Peter 1:3-9 New International Version (NIV) Praise to God for a Living Hope 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by Gods power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faithof greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by firemay result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Thought for the Week

About 1930, the Communist leader Bukharin journeyed from Moscow to Kiev. His mission was to address a huge assembly. His subject: atheism. For a solid hour he aimed his heavy artillery at Christianity, hurling argument and ridicule. At last he was finished and viewed what seemed to be the smoldering ashes of the peoples faith. Are there any questions? Bukharin demanded. A solitary man arose and asked permission to speak. He mounted the platform and moved close to the Communist. The audience was breathlessly silent as the man surveyed them first to the right, then to the left. At last he shouted the ancient Orthodox greeting, CHRIST IS RISEN! The vast assembly arose as one person and the response came crashing like the sound of an avalanche, HE IS RISEN INDEED!
