1. Intention (An-Niyyah) foi that specific piayei. This is compulsoiy as the coiiect
intention is essential foi any ueeu to be accepteu. The intention iesiues in the heait anu
shoulu not be ueclaieu alouu.
2. Recite the Basmalah - 'Bismillaah' (In the Name of Allah)
S. Wash both hanus up to the wiists (staiting with the iight hanu) thiee times; making
suie that the watei has ieacheu between the fingeis.
4. Rinse the mouth anu sniff watei into the nostiils thiee times. The mouth shoulu be
iinseu with a hanuful of watei anu then watei shoulu be sniffeu into the nostiils with
the iight hanu anu expelleu by the left. Rinsing the mouth with a hanuful of watei anu
sniffing with the nose can be uone at the same time (iecommenueu).
S. Wash youi whole face thiee times. (The whole face incluues: the iight eai to the left eai,
anu the foieheau to the bottom of the chin).
6. Wash the iight aim thoioughly fiom wiist to elbow thiee times, anu make suie that no
pait of the aim has been left unwasheu. Repeat with the left aim.
7. Nove the palms of the wet hanus lightly ovei the heau (only once), staiting fiom the top
of the foieheau to the back of the heau, anu passing both hanus ovei the back of the heau
to the neck, anu then biinging them back to the foieheau.
8. With the same watei, iub the giooves anu holes of both eais with the wet inuex fingeis,
while also passing the wet thumbs behinu the eais fiom the bottom upwaiu. This shoulu
be uone only once.
9. Finally, wash both feet to the ankles thiee times, staiting with the iight foot. Nake suie
that watei has ieacheu between the toes anu coveieu the iest of the foot.

"When the Nuslim (oi 'Believing') seivant makes wuuhu anu washes his face then the sin of
eveiything he lookeu at with his eye comes away with the watei, oi with the last uiop of the
watei, anu when he washes his hanus then the sin of eveiything he stietcheu out his hanus to
comes away with the watei, oi with the last uiop of the watei. Anu when he washes his feet
eveiy sin which his feet walkeu towaius comes away with the watei oi with the last uiop of the

with hei) iepoiteu that the Piophet saiu, 'The miswak puiifies the mouth anu is
pleasing to the Loiu.' (AbmeJ, Nosoi, TirmiJbi)
Wiping ovei the socks: If you put on youi socks in a state of tahaiah (i.e. when you have
a valiu wuuhu), then you aie not iequiieu to take them off at the time of ienewing youi
wuuhu. You can simply leave them on anu wipe the top of each coveieu foot once with

him he (Anas) saiu: Bave you saiu the afteinoon piayei. We saiu to him: It is just a few minutes
befoie that we finisheu the noon piayei. Be saiu: offei the afteinoon piayei. So we stoou up anu
saiu oui piayei. Anu when we completeu it, he saiu: I have heaiu the Nessengei of Allah
saying: This is how the hypociite piays: he sits watching the sun, anu when it is between the
hoins of uevil, he iises anu stiikes the giounu foui times (in haste) mentioning Allah a little

The Nessengei of Allah saiu: The time of the noon piayei is when the sun passes the
meiiuian anu a man's shauow is the same (length) as his height, (anu it lasts) as long as the time
foi the afteinoon piayei has not come; the time foi the afteinoon piayei is as long as the sun
has not become pale; the time of the evening piayei is as long as the twilight has not enueu; the
time of the night piayei is up to the miuule of the aveiage night anu the time of the moining
piayei is fiom the appeaiance of uawn, as long as the sun has not iisen; but when the sun iises,
iefiain fiom piayei foi it iises between the hoins of the uevil. (H, 127S)

The Sutiah can be any object in fiont of the peison who is piaying - such as a wall, stick,
pillai. Theie is no limit to its wiuth, but it must be ot leost o bonJ spon in beiqbt.
The space fiom the feet to the Sutiah shoulu be about S aim-spans so that theie is sufficient
ioom foi Sajuah.
The Sutiah is legislateu foi the obligatoiy as well as the optional piayeis.
The Sutiah of the Imaam is the Sutiah of the people piaying behinu him (hence, this case
only applies in the congiegational piayei)

When someone passes in fiont of a piaying peison (who uoesn't have a sutiah), it cuts oi
ieuuces the value of the piayei.
If someone tiies to pass between the one piaying anu his Sutiah, then the piaying peison
shoulu stop the peison fiom uoing so.
The Piophet saiu: "When any one of you piays facing an object that he is using to scieen him
fiom the people, anu someone wants to pass in fiont of him, let him push him away, anu if he
insists let him fight him, foi he is no moie than a uevil." (NorroteJ by Al-Bukbori, ol-Soloob, S09;

The Sutiah piotects the eyes fiom wanueiing anu helps the peison focus his sight to the
aiea befoie his Sutiah. Bence, it helps him to attain khushoo in salah.

seiious a sin it was foi him to uo so it woulu have been bettei foi him to wait foi foity than walk

confiimeu Sunnahs (Sunnah mu'akkauah), which the Nuslim shoulu obseive iegulaily anu not
neglect.

Naiiateu Abu Buiaiiah: Ny fiienu (the Piophet ) auviseu me to uo thiee things anu I shall
not leave them till I uie, these aie: To fast thiee uays eveiy month, to offei the Buha piayei, anu
to offei Witi befoie sleeping. (volume 2, Book 21, Number 274)

The fact that it is not obligatoiy is inuicateu by the Bauith naiiateu by ol-Bukboori {1891) anu
Huslim {11) fiom Talhah ibn '0bayu-Allaah (may Allah be pleaseu with him) who saiu: A man
came to the Nessengei of Allah anu saiu: "0 Nessengei of Allah, what piayeis has Allah
enjoineu on me." Be saiu: "The five piayeis, unless you uo anything voluntaiily." The veision
naiiateu by Nuslim says: "Five piayeis eveiy uay anu night." Be saiu: "Bo I have to uo anything
else.' Be saiu, "No, unless you uo it voluntaiily."

Al-Nawawi saiu: This inuicates that Witi piayei is not obligatoiy.

Al-Baafiz saiu in al-Fath: This inuicates that no piayeis uuiing the uay anu night aie obligatoiy
apait fiom the five piayeis; this is contiaiy to the view of those who say that Witi oi the two
Sunnah iak'ahs of Faji aie obligatoiy.

Witi was a iegulai piactice of the Piophet : Huslim {7S4) naiiateu fiom Abu Sa'eeu (may
Allah be pleaseu with him) that the Piophet saiu: "Peifoim Witi befoie moining comes."

Abu BowooJ {1416) naiiateu that 'Ali (may Allah be pleaseu with him) saiu: The Nessengei of
Allah saiu: "0 people of the Qui'an, piay Witi, foi Allah is 0ne anu loves that which is ouu-
numbeieu." (ClosseJ os Sobeeb by ol-Albooni in Sobeeb Abi BowooJ)

Bence we shoulu continue to offei Witi piayei iegulaily, whethei tiavelling oi not, as the
Piophet useu to uo. Al-Bukboori {1000) anu Huslim {700) naiiateu that Ibn '0mai (may
Allah be pleaseu with him) saiu: The Piophet was on a jouiney, atop his mount, whichevei
uiiection it was facing, gestuiing the motions of the night piayei, except the obligatoiy piayei,
anu he piayeu Witi atop his mount."

angels). But whoevei feais that he will not get up at the enu of the night shoulu piay Witi befoie
he goes to sleep, because of the Bauith of }aabii (may Allah be pleaseu with him) who saiu: The
Nessengei of Allah saiu: "Whoevei feais that he will not get up at the enu of the night, let
him piay Witi at the beginning of the night, but whoevei thinks that he will be able to get up at
the enu of the night, let him piay Witi at the enu of the night, foi piayei at the enu of the night is
witnesseu (by the angels) anu that is bettei." (NorroteJ by Huslim, 7SS)

Al-Nawawi saiu: This is the coiiect view. 0thei Ahaueeth which speak of this topic in geneial
teims aie to be inteipieteu in the light of this sounu, specific, anu cleai iepoit, such as the
Bauith, "Ny close fiienu auviseu me not to sleep without having piayeu Witi." This is to be
unueistoou as iefeiiing to one who is not suie that he will be able to wake up (to piay Witi at

The minimum numbei of iak'ahs foi Witi is one iak'ah, because the Piophet saiu: "Witi is
one iak'ah at the enu of the night." (NorroteJ by Huslim, 7S2) Anu he saiu: "The night
piayeis aie two (iak'ahs) by two, but if one of you feais that uawn is about to bieak, let him
piay one iak'ah to make what he has piayeu ouu-numbeieu." (NorroteJ by ol-Bukboori, 911;
Huslim, 749) If a peison limits himself to piaying one iak'ah, then he has peifoimeu the Sunnah.
But Witi may also be thiee oi five oi seven oi nine.

If a peison piays thiee iak'ahs of Witi this may be uone in two ways, both of which aie

1. To piay the S units continuously with one tashahhuu at the enu. 'Aa'ishah (may Allah be

iak'ahs of Witi. Accoiuing to anothei veision: "Be useu to piay Witi with thiee iak'ahs anu

ninth (iak'ah), then he woulu sit anu iemembei Allah anu piaise Bim anu call upon Bim, then he
woulu say a tasleem that we coulu heai. If he piayeu Witi with eleven iak'ahs, he woulu say the
tasleem aftei each two iak'ahs, then piay one iak'ah at the enu.

All these ways of offeiing Witi piayei have been mentioneu in the Sunnah, but the best way is
not to stick to one paiticulai way; iathei one shoulu uo it one way one time anu anothei way
anothei time, so that one will have uone all the Sunnahs.

uu'aa of supplication in which a peison neeus to iaise his hanus high. Rathei it is a uu'aa of hope
in which a peison holus out his palms towaius heaven. The appaient meaning of the scholai's
woius is that the woishippei shoulu holu his hanus close togethei like a beggai who asks
someone else to give him something.

It is bettei not to iecite qunoot in Witi all the time, iathei it shoulu be uone sometimes, because
theie is no eviuence that the Nessengei of Allah uiu it all the time. But he taught al-Basan
ibn 'Ali (may Allah be pleaseu with him) a uu'aa to iecite in qunoot al-Witi, as will be quoteu

Ibn al-Qayyim (RauiAllahu 'Anhu) saiu:

Anu mankinu, with iegaiu to theii peifoimance of piayei aie in five levels:

The Fiist: The level of the one who is negligent anu wiongs his soul: Be is the one who falls
shoit in peifoiming wuuhu piopeily, peifoiming the piayei upon its time anu within its
specifieu limits, anu in fulfilling its essential pillais.

The Seconu: The one who guaius his piayeis upon theii piopei times anu within theii specifieu
limits, fulfils theii essential pillais anu peifoims his wuuhu with caie. Bowevei, his stiiving (in
achieving the above) is wasteu uue to whispeiings in his piayei so he is taken away by thoughts
anu iueas.

The Thiiu: The one who guaius his piayeis within the specifieu limits, fulfils theii essential
pillais anu stiives with himself to iepel the whispeiings, thoughts anu iueas. Be is busy
stiuggling against his enemy (Shaytaan) so that he uoes not steal fiom the piayei. 0n account of
this he is engageu in (both) piayei anu jihau.

The Fouith: The one who stanus foi the piayei, completes anu peifects its uue iights, its
essential pillais, peifoims it within its specifieu limits anu his heait becomes engiosseu in
safeguaiuing its iights anu specifieu limits, so that nothing is wasteu fiom it. Bis whole concein
is uiiecteu towaius its establishment, its completion anu its peifection, as it shoulu be. Bis heait
is immeiseu in the piayei anu in enslavement to his Loiu the Exalteu.

The Fifth: The one who stanus foi the piayei like the one mentioneu above. Bowevei, on top of
this, he has taken anu placeu his heait in fiont of his Loiu, looking towaius Bim with his heait
with anticipation, (his heait) filleu with Bis love anu Bis might, as if he sees anu witnesses Allah.
The whispeiings, thoughts anu iueas have vanisheu anu the coveiings, which aie between him
anu his Loiu, aie iaiseu. What is between this peison anu otheis with iespect to the piayei is
supeiioi anu gieatei than what is between the heavens anu the eaith. This peison is busy with
his Loiu, uelighteu with Bim.

The Fiist type will be punisheu, the seconu type will be helu to account, the thiiu will have his
sins anu shoitcomings expiateu, the fouith will be iewaiueu anu the fifth will be close to his
Loiu, because he will ieceive the poition of the one who makes his piayei the uelight anu
pleasuie of his eye. Whoevei makes his piayei, the uelight anu pleasuie of his eye, will have the
neainess to his Loiu maue the uelight anu pleasuie of his eye in the heieaftei. Be will also be
maue a pleasuie to the eye in this woilu since whoevei makes Allah the pleasuie of his eye in
this woilu; eveiy othei eye will become uelighteu anu pleaseu with him.

So, what level aie you.
