Running head: UNIT ONE, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS Hassaan 2 History of copyrights and fair use law It is important and beneficial to know the history of something you want to learn about or make a research. I was surprised when I read Article 1, section 8, clause 8 from the constitution. The copyrights were protected long time ago as it is stated Congress has the power to promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries. It was clear from the beginning and then updated with some acts like 1870, 1909, and 1976 as internet has been discovered and more technology has been involved. Benefits of copyrights and fair use law From my point of view, there are two major benefits of following the copyrights and fair use law. First are the ethical morals that students, teachers, and public should have built in in their personalities which encourage them to do their own work and not cheating. Also the U.S. is a country where all must obey the law. Second are the economic benefits that will cover all Americans by following the copyrights and fair use law. If all authors, writers, directorsetc. can protect their arts and creations; they would earn more money, pay more tax, and hire more workers to make their job done perfectly. What digital resource I am creating? Personally, one of my soon future goals is to be an Instructional Designer at a college or university. I will create many trainings materials for faculty and staff. I will ask Dr. Richard Smith for his permission (which is not harming) to use his materials. I can use his entire content just make some update and change names and dates only. Same if I am designing an online course. However, if I am going to write my first book, I will not be able to copy all his materials. I have to use some of it with citation. Moreover, I may pay for Dr. Smith; right professor? Some examples of what counts as fair use for teachers All materials and contents using other people work must be cited in order to avoid plagiarism, general examples of limited portions of published materials that might be used in the classroom under fair use for a limited period of time include: A chapter from a book, not entire book An article from a newspaper A short story, essay, or poem
