INTRODUCTION OF QUALITY OF WORK LIFE

The term QWL refers to the favourableness or unfavourableness of a total job environment for people. QWL programs are another way in which organisations recognise their responsibility to develop jobs and working conditions that are excellent for people as well as for economic health of the organisation. The elements in a typical QWL program include open communications, equitable reward systems, a concern for employee job security and satisfying careers and participation in decision making. Many early QWL efforts focus on job enrichment. In addition to improving the work system, QWL programs usually emphasis development of employee skills, the reduction of occupational stress and the development of more co-operative labour-management relations. QWL is a process by which an organization responds to employee needs for developing mechanisms to allow them to share fully in making the decisions that design their lives at work. The aim of QWL is to identify and implement alternative programs to improve the quality of professional as well as personal life of an organization's employee. The QWL approach considers people as an 'asset' to the organization rather as 'costs'. It believes that people perform better when they are allowed to participates in managing their work and make decisions. This approach motivates people by satisfying not ony their economic need but also their social and psychological ones. To satisfy the new generation workforce, organizations need to concentrate on job designs and organization of work. Further, today's workforce is realizing the importance of relationships and trying to strike a balance between career and personal lives.

DEFINITION OF QUALITY OF WORK LIFE

Quality of Work Life aims at integrating the socio-psychological needs of people in the organisation, the unique requirements of a particular technology, the structure and processes of the organisation, and the existing socio-cultural milieu. It is, thus, concerned with the overall climate of the work.

IV

Nadler and Lawler have defined QWL as follows: Quality of Work Life is concerned about the impact of work on people as well as on organisation effectiveness, and the idea of participation in organisational problem solving and decision making. The basic purpose of improving QWL is to change the climate at work so that human, technological and organisational interface leads to a better Quality of Work Life.

LIMITATIONS OF STUDY

The research was time bounded and it was done only on 40 teachers of Disabled welfare trust of India, the school for disabled children in Surat. So outcome can not be universal. Poor responses from the respondents can be also a limitation of this research. The findings of study are based on the assumption that respondents have given true opinion.

As the questionnaire was somewhat related to their personal life doubt was their personal views, will honestly attempt the question and there will be no fake information.

Time limitation is one of the constraints in the study.

Lack of experience of the researcher is also the limitation of this study.

Getting permission from the school was a challenge which was successfully encountered.
