Michigan Curriculum Framework Physical Education Content Standards and Benchmarks: - B.6.FB.1, M.1.MS.4, M.1.NG.1, M.1.NG.2, K.2.MS.2 Unit Outcomes: -Review of basic safety rules and fundamentals involved in volleyball. Students will demonstrate a bump, back bump, net, hitting, setting, serving, and net recovery during drills and games. Students will be visually checked for understanding and adjustments will be made to ensure the students understanding of how to properly address the volleyball using the bump, set, serve, net recovery, and hitting in drills or games. Students will demonstrate an understanding of rotating and keeping score in volleyball by playing games. Students will work in partners and teams to develop awareness and understanding of teamwork needed for a successful, fun game of volleyball. Students will communicate effectively and positively. Students will also display good sportsmanship. Procedures: -Anticipatory Set: Students will review all of the skills that they have learned the previous days. Students will come up and demonstrate each skill they have learned in class. How many of you like playing the game of volleyball or do you prefer to play beach volleyball instead? -Vocabulary: -Forearm pass- Most used skill in vb. (move into path of ball, dont reach for it, bend knees prior to making contact -follow through (extend knees as passing). -Back bump- The students will use this hit when the ball needs to get over the net and the only way to get to the ball is to hit backwards (using the bump style of hit). The hands will have to rise higher on the follow through and the shoulders should be square to the place where they want the ball to fly towards -Side bump- Similar to the back bump but the shoulders must be perpendicular to the point they want the ball to go to and the follow through must go towards the net. -Set- A pass that sets the ball for a possible spike (second pass)- 1 or 2 feet above the net and a foot away from it (moves under ball-control w/ tips). Contact ball at eye level. (Fingers-triangle-through window bend knees) (Bend at elbows and follow through). -Hitting (spiking) - One of the most exciting ways a person can score a point in the game of volleyball. The ball should be struck while arm is bent with elbow leading (hit on top of ball with heal of hand). Drive the ball down-run and jump up (snap wrist) on contact. Most effective play in volleyball (can be extremely difficult to return-success depends on the whole team). -Serving- Used to start a play (can be done underhand or overhand). -Net Recovery- The net recover is used when the ball is hit into the net and the team still has another hit left. The player must follow the path of the ball and use a bump with their body lower to the ground to save the shot from falling. For the net recovery to work, its best that the ball enters the net towards the bottom and rolls upwards. When practicing this shot the student will throw the ball under handed into the lower part of the net.
